Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

From a team including former designers of HITMAN and PAYDAY comes Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, a tactical adventure game that combines the turn-based combat of XCOM with real-time stealth and exploration of a post-human world reclaimed by nature… and Mutants.

Of course the world ends.

It was just a question of time. Extreme climate change, global economic crisis, a lethal pandemic, and increasing tension between old and new superpowers. For the first time since 1945 nuclear weapons were used in armed conflict. Mushroom clouds rose from east to west before the dust settled.

Now it’s over and the Earth is still. Nature has invaded ruined cities. Wind sweeps through empty streets, turned into graveyards.

The humans are all gone. Scavenging through the remains of civilization are the Mutants, deformed humanoids and animals alike, searching for salvation or just something to eat. To survive, you and your companions must venture out to explore the Zone.

Maybe one day you will find the Eden of legends, the ancients’ haven in the middle of hell. That’s where truth awaits, the stories say. Maybe you will find your answers there.

Then again, maybe it’s all bullshit.

Mutant Year Zero: Seed of Evil

Seed of Evil is an expansion to the award-winning tactical adventure game Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden picking up where the original game ended and offering hours of more gameplay, new locations to visit, and a new leading character!

Continue the main story and explore many hours of all new content. Expand your team with the veteran stalker Big Khan the moose and get ready to defeat a new threat to Dux, Bormin, Selma and all the others.

In Seed of Evil you must solve the mystery of the powerful and ominous roots which have taken over the Ark. Discover huge new maps, battle new enemies, improve your mutations, get your hands on all new gear, defeat foes trying to take back lost ground and face off against a vicious new adversary.

So much to love, yet it falls short

Yes, there's a lot to love about this game, but in the end it falls flat on its nose due to being incredibly linear and the gameplay repetitive and unbalanced. The characters are great, the constant bickering and bantering between Bormin and Dux is entertaining, the environments are awesome(Being a Swede, It's really great to see all the remnants of actual Swedish places and puns on Swedish companies and logos). Where it fails is that gameplay-wise it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Is it a turn-based strategy game? If so, it falls short because there is really one viable strategy to use. Stealth. All the time. Pick off loner enemies silently without being detected, and then move in to finish the rest. On every single map. Supplies and upgrades are scarce, which would be fine if not for the fact that if you spend those resources in the wrong way - you're screwed as the mobs quickly grow stronger and you can no longer pick them off one by one, either due to too weak silent weapons or not enough special skills/mutations in your squad. Granted, the following is obviously an exaggeration - but the game made me remember old Amiga games like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, which were gorgeous for their time but consisted only of pressing the right key at the right moment, or BAM - you're dead. Is it an RPG? If so, it falls short because there isn't enough RPG elements or variety. There isn't much in the way of choice on how to play or upgrade your characters. Do it "right", or you're screwed as per above. The skill trees contain very few unique skills/mutations. Both Strategy and RPG games should offer at least some choice in how to play the game, even if some strategies are doomed to fail. Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden doesn't provide any. Some aspects of the game deserve a much, much higher rating than what I'm giving it, but ultimately it stops being fun after a few hours, no matter how gorgeous it is. And games should be fun.

Love this game!!!

So much fun and the characters are really rough and tough and their digalouge with eachother is very funny. You get to be in charge of your own little band of mutants and call all the shots as well as giving them cool outfits that increase certain qualties about them. Overall fantastic game and the battle planning part of things is great and just a real fun game to play that is battle focused, but with enough storyline and character development that it is a real treat and i look forward to their next DLC!

My First Turn Based

I gotta say, I disagree with others stating the game does not know what it wants to be. It defined it self perfectly in my opinion. Turn based, stealth. Which I really enjoyed. I do not play a lot of turn based games. Only the bigger ones like Xcom, RtoE (of course), and Wasteland2/3. And I'll be honest, RtoE, is the only I have beaten. The characters are awesome! Each having their own back stories, or just the spats back and forth. All of it really helped flesh out the character. I enjoyed listening to them quite a bit. I also loved the stealth. To the point I am not sure why more games do not use this mechanic? It gives the combat a nice twist. Taking your time, laying out the arena, and stricking when you think you have given yourself the upper hand. Going in and knowing stealth is your friend will get you much further. Going guns blazing is a sure fire way to get yourself snuffed. Not saying it is not possible, I am sure it is, and someone has done it. But RtoE cranks up the difficulty to find a nice balance, where stealth sould always be the first strat. In my opinion, hands down, no dispute! This game has one of the most beautiful maps I have ever seen. Bearded Ladies did an amazing job making this world feel like the apocolypse has come and nature took back over with zero hesitation. Seeing crumbled buildings, vines over take sign posts, half way torn down houses and towns, with lush tress / forests all around really brings this world together. Which makes scavenging all the more pleasent when combing top to bottom. Another detail I would like for games (like Wasteland3) to do, is make the map more vertical. I appreciate sneaking my through some of these maps, end up finding a building which allows me up to the second floor give me the height advantage in some fights. If you do not like stealth, or scavenging, then true, I would not recommend this game. But with fun dialuge, beautiful maps, stealth, fun turn based combat, in my opinion, we have a winner!

Love it

This is my favorite game since Wasteland 2. It's a fun game, not a grind. Some games are too complicated, and others are too simple, this one is just perfect. I hope there will be more DLCs.

Awesome!... But short....

Awesome game and art and story however I completed the character development in less than 8 hours and all I have left is finishing a couple of missions. It could have used A LOT more content. It definitely felt like a bit of a gypp because of how little content we get for our dollar. Now to be clear they did a good job on the story and graphics and even gameplay and everything, I really like what is there, there just needs to be MORE there. I would say its a five star game if it had more content. More equipment development, more levels or base upgrades, anything to create more to do, it's just too little.
