more than just a hack & slash
(I've played this game previously and re-bought it here on GOG.) Straight out of the box, this game is fun. The tutorial succeeds in teaching the player the core mechanics. Speaking of which: they are _very_ straightforward - although you'd be fooled when concluding that this necessarily results in an equally simplistic, hack & slash gameplay. Especially as the difficulty rises, timing, distance and combos are gaining importance, to the point at which the gameplay feels almost as much like a fighting game as a hack & slash. (I've seen other players experiencing this differently, but ended up preferring this play style. It also feels more resilient to the game's randomness.) Being a rougelike/lite, the game tries to alter the run-by-run experience by randomizing equipment and perks. While perks seem rather insignificant just from their description, they have a noticeable impact on gameplay and resource management, with especially the latter adding a strategic aspect to the game. The same can not be said about the equipment system: I found myself sticking to underleveled gear because the stats mattered less to me than the way they changed my character's movement. Levels are generated procedurally, and while this does render the beginnings less interesting, I had fun tackling these levels with a more reckless approach. That being said, I still found myself hoping for a little more variety. The only negative so far has been the performance: my system exceeds the recommended system requirements (albeit just a little), yet I frequently experience drops to ~20FPS. I'm not deducting a star for this, because I'm running the game on Linux using a compatibility layer, so your mileage may vary. In conclusion, I'm rating this a very solid 4.5/5. I bought the game for ~20€ using the launch discount, which is the sweet spot for this kind of game for me. The regular price of 25€ is higher than I'd personally recommend. Thanks for bringing this game to GOG!
