When in Main Menu, you need to press F2 on your keyboard to bring up the Options Menu, in which you can set difficulty level, number of continues, and change controls. This is a crucial thing, and yet, it is ''hidden'' from plain sight.
As for the game itself, it's an underrated entry in MK canon. It isn't perfect, but it is fast-paced and begginer-friendly.
For a looong time, MK4 was not available anywhere. Thank you GOG for bringing it back from limbo! I encourage everyone to check it out, because this is a fantastic game, even now after all these years!! It's the first MK I ever played as a teenager and this game blew my mind (it still does!).
This MK is really unique and no other game from the series is like that (in a very positive sense!). From at least the first eight MK games, MK4 features the fastest gameplay, which is much fun. It went back to the roots after MK3 got too ridiculous with silly finishers. The graphics look great (in motion better than on the screenshots!) and for some reason the characters here look much more real than in the later 3D MK games (Deadly Alliance, etc.). Some of the battle cries and moves are really funny, I love that. The weapon system is most fun in 2-player mode (when I played against a friend, I frequently knocked his weapon off and dared him to pick it up from the ground before I landed in his face with a flying kick, this teasing was quite funny). The cutscene movies are awesome (great atmosphere) and give you motivation to beat the game with every character.
The PC version is the best version of MK4 there is, because in the arcade version Goro was missing and the cutscene movies were much less impressive. While the arcade version has somewhat better graphics, the home console versions have more to offer and the PC version is superior to PS/N64.
Not everything is perfect: While Shinnok has much potential as a boss (as we have seen in MK9), here he is very weak despite being an Elder God. However, Goro is awesome!!
I only miss one thing: In the original PC version of MK4, when the game started, there was the option menu displaying a picture of Scorpian in the living forest and you could hear the laugh of the announcer. That's not in the GOG version. Other than that, the GOG version is flawless (Flawless Victory).
The reaction when I saw the email was : OMG OMG OMG OMG
I've bought this without any hesitation, and my God the thing I've seen in the game installation folder, CD Project actually took the effort and implemented the 3DFX mod in the game, you can play this with the 3DFX graphics and in widescreen even in 4K.
CD Project you did above and beyond, I wish I could hug you all one by one to finally made this available, Mortal Kombat 4 was always my favorite MK game and I'm so happy I finally have the ultimate version of this with the cut scenes, the cd music and the 3DFX mod.
THANK YOU THANK YOU CD Project.
PS: Please give us Mortal Kombat Trilogy and will owe you for the rest of my life :)
This is actually a really impressive port. Unlike MK1, MK2 & MK3 this is worth getting over trying to get the arcade version to work on MAME. The game is extremely fast and snappy. The load times are so short they're over before you even have time to finish reading the "Loading" on the screen.
As for the game itself I've warmed up to it over the years. I think it's fair to say that MK4 is the fastest game in the series. MK9 actually feels kind of slow compared to it. Despite the 3D graphics this is still a 2D fighter at heart. You can press a button to move toward the screen or futherfrom it. Likewise there are move that can bounce you around the arena as well. Mostly you'll be sticking to a 2D plane in a 3D environment.
There are weapons in the game but it's just a gimmick. You can take out a weapon anytime during a match but if you are hit once you'll lose it and go back to fists.
This goes does suffer a little bit of control compatibility, it will work with a xinput controller but you'll have to work out a way to make the game use a d-pad instead of a analog stick.
THIS IS NOT THE KIND OF GAME YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH AN ANALOG STICK.
So get that d-pad up and running.
Mortal Kombat 4 isn't as dark or serious as other games in the franchise but it sure is a lot of fun. One of those games that has gotten better with age in my opinion and this port is very good indeed.
