Description
In a distant future, Mankind has nearly exploited all of the natural resources of our exhausted planet. As various resource wars flare up, nations begin forming alliances in order to arrive at a better solution than simply fighting to the last. A solution is found: the MoonBase probe. Remotely controlled by a single pilot, the probe lands on the surface of any available planet, replicates its central Hub, and expands across the planet in search of life-giving energy. The already fragile alliance crumbles as its leaders recognize the potential of the probe. Four factions arise from the ashes of a fallen alliance--each with its own objectives. What started as a tool to harvest resources has now been forged into a deadly weapon of war. You begin as a pilot for your chosen faction. As you operate your Hub remotely, you wage a campaign across each planet, searching for energy-rich pools while destroying anything that would dare to take your hard-earned resources.

Moonbase Commander is a simple to learn, difficult to master turn-based strategy game where you are fighting for the limited resources of a planet against either the AI or other players. If you are feeling creative, you can make customized maps with the included Map Editor.
  • A tough AI that gives strategy veterans a run for their money.
  • Easy to learn, difficult to master gameplay keeps the action fast and exciting!
  • Includes an exceptionally easy-to-use map editor.

Very good game

This is a solid strategy game for 1-4 players. It's one of my family's favorites. It has the same feel as an RTS (building an infrastructure and sending out units to attack and defend) but in a turn-based and compact format. You start with a base hub that can send out a maximum of eight new buildings from it each attached to its parent building by an energy supplying umbilical cord. Some buildings are offensive, others are defensive, and still others can send out more buildings. There are only 18 options each turn from sending out buildings to launching attacks. Very soon you have a sprawling complex of shields and missile launchers which your enemies will carefully chip away at until finally exposing and destroying your main base. The defenses and offenses are well-balanced. This is a very solid strategy game. Lots of fun.

Best Game Nobody Played

Moonbase Commander won Gamespot's Best Game No One Played award in 2002. Well you should! This game is EXCELLENT! It's a strategy game that's instantly understandable, easy to play, hard to master, and tons of fun. Throw crawling bombs into the lake, send decoy cluster bombs to take out his anti-air, lob a virus at his hub, and laugh maniacally as he amputates his own arm! The music is hilariously bad. Don't let the Crayola graphics fool you--this is a deep game and a blast to play with friends. A *must* for LAN parties!

Worth every star

Until the recent release on GOG, I had never even heard of Moonbase Commander. I had recently had a hiatus from gaming however I frequently check GOG's new releases in case something really special comes out. I read information supplied by the reviews here and tried out the demo. Originally I'm not sure if I would have liked Moonbase Commander. I used to be very dedicated to playing games and had I played this game earlier, would have passed it off as too limited, given that there is no storyline or gameworld to pour hours into. The gameplay, while showing a sophisticated approach and take on the usual strategy fair, may have seemed too basic. However, given that I invest far less time on average into games, Moonbase Commander has proven great! It takes at most times for me under an hour to play through a map. As a now "casual gamer", this is a perfect amount of time. Each game has a certain degree of unpredictability due to the fact that there exists no usual "rush tactics". All weapons are available from the start since each side begins with enough points to use the most expensive units, worth 7 "energy points". This clears out alot of what I used to think as wasted time before the real meat of a strategy game begins. From the first turn, its excitement as you don't know what you can expect from your opponent. There are also other fine details to enjoy with this game. The map is structured such that there are no borders where no gameplay is. Shooting something towards the end of the map makes it repear at the other extreme. This allows for flanking tactics and numerous ways of manuevering around your enemy when there is more or less a standstil with neither side having an advantage with arms or energy surpluses. I thoroughly recommend this game and hope that others can also enjoy!

Turn-based, but with twitcher element

While the game is "turn-based", it requires a timed mouse press (aka skill test) for every single action. Not only that, unless you've practised this game extensively, there is no way to know what that timed mouse press will do (i.e., how far you will throw), since the only feedback you get is a "strength meter". I've played and enjoyed other games with twitch mechanics added to turn-based play (in spite of this, not because of it), but given the overall simplicity of this game I wouldn't have bought it at all had I known. I really need to research these things better before buying, even if on sale.

Load, aim and fire!

Moonbase is an interesting mix of the old artellery games like scorched earth and others. the twist ist: you also expand and conquer territory by shooting different structure knots just likeyour ammunition. There are shields and energy collectors, anti-air, rocket towers and spy balloons. Graphics are pure and rather simple but okay for this puzzler. I enjoyed that bargain I made at a local store. If only I were a bit better at htting the right power while aiming... Pressing the fire button - still holding it - still - and: go! Oh - too far again ... ;)
