Fun and compatible
The game is just as fun as I remember playing it on a cabinet, except you can own and beat the game for just 19 quarters which is an absolute steal. This game also runs perfectly in Linux using Proton (I use experimental)

Game Great - Port Horrible (Vers. 1.0)
Kurz und Knapp: Ist mein Lieblings Metal Slug teil. Das Spiel selber eine 10/10. Die Portierung ist aber unzumutbar. Angeblich werden die Controller anerkannt. Aber die Belegungen machen keinen Sinn. Will man diese ändern, ist das nicht einmal ganz möglich. Ich habe sämtliche Controller Ausprobiert. Vom Xbox bis 8bitdo - die Tastenbelegungen waren unnötig kompliziert. Z.B. A ist Start/Menü. Ich wollte es ändern. Dafür braucht man ein bestätigungsknopf. Welcher der ist? Ausprobiern. Ach wenn man aber X (Löschen) drückt, dann muss man alles nochmal machen und wenn man ausversehen zurück und bestätigung die gleiche Tastenkombination ist - Softlock. Es ist Somit 45 min frustriend gewesen. Und nachdem Alles durch war und ich es neu gestartet habe, wurden die Kombinationen nicht gespeichert... Na Super. Nochmal nix gegen das Spiel - das ist Top. Aber Wenn die Tastenbelegung nicht klappt, dann hat man ein Problem. Englisch Short and sweet: It's my favorite Metal Slug part. The game itself a 10/10. But the porting is unreasonable. Supposedly the controllers are recognized. But the assignments make no sense. If you want to change them, it's not even possible. I have tried all controllers. From Xbox to 8bitdo - the button assignments were unnecessarily complicated. For example, A is start/menu. I wanted to change it. You need a confirmation button for that. Which one is that? Try it out. But if you press X (delete), then you have to do everything again and if you accidentally go back and confirm is the same key combination - softlock. So it was frustrating for 45 minutes. And after everything was done and I restarted it, the combinations were not saved... Great. Again, nothing against the game - it's great. But if the key assignment doesn't work, then you have a problem. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

I've grown to like it.
When it was first out in the arcades I didn't care much for it. Now that it's on GOG DRM free I enjoy playing it for short periods of times. Were I to spent the money per credit I've spent, it would've been was more than $6 and it has small discount sales. With infinite credits and IIRC 2 player local coop, it's a great run and gun arcade game. The other first metal slug games, 1,2,3,X are also enjoyable. I dunno if I'd wand 5 or not but if it was available on GOG I'd gladly risk $6 to have all the MVS arcade Metal Slug games.

Code Mystics does another solid!
This is the only Code Mystics version of Metal Slug on GOG, and they did a great job porting this game. I just hope they can get the go-ahead to port the other Metal Slug games.
