The Best Game in the Series
Yes, you read it right - it is THE best game in all Total War series. It manages to keep the fragile balance between simplicity and complexity, between abundance of mechanics and their impact on gameplay, between visual attractiveness and consistent visual style, between strategy and tactics, and so on. Province-based map movement and token-style units impart it the perfect board game flavor. Soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous. GUI is pleasant to operate and just to look at. AI is rather lacking as it used to be in every Total War game but not to degree of, say, Empire TW so it doesn't irritate with its stupidity too much. If Creative Assembly made a game with MTW boardgame atmosphere and mechanics in Ancient Rome setting, I would name such a game the best one, but as for now, MTW is still BETTER than Rome Total War (and than MTW2, mind you), and after RTW the series began to decline step by step, finally having become a mindless factory of yearly pressworks. Old and gold, good to hold and behold.
