DS Port

Originally Lock's Quest was released on the Nintendo DS and you can see this when you google for it. Cause there is some major difference between Port and Original: aside from money to buy things you also farmed material/resources like wood, stone, metal (for wooden, stone and metal buildings). In this port you only farm money and that is kinda broken (cause there are some bypasses on how to get more money). In general the game is funny, but it kinda has some severe bugs: some can delete or rather override your entire progress for some weird reason. Reason may be the auto-save function of the game, but it's only a guess. One good point is that the game does support a wide range of PC Controllers/Gamepads. Each No Name Controller I tested did its job on this port. But each time you completely restart the game you've to go to Options to switch between Keyboard and Controller-Option. It's not a big deal, but it can be annoying. All in all it's a good game. It's just a bit sad that you can't farm additional resources like it is in the original on the DS. My rating would be higher (maybe 5 Stars) if there wouldn't be these severe bugs. But till now I did 2 full approaches (cause my progress got deleted at some point) to complete the game and I still could restart again from the beginning - which is now the 3rd and last approach and that is definitely not ok.

Refreshing

Based on v1.0 Tower defence, strategy, role playing (rpg). It sounds promising. But is it? After watching some gameplay videos I thought I would give it a try. There are some basic settings (video, sound and controls (which cannot be changed and doesn’t show everything “q” = deselecting building parts in build mode for example)) but no gameplay settings. After starting the first game cut scene’s guide you through the story. There are some mouse clicks involved to read the story. After that, depending on the type of mission you come in the build mode. There you need to setup a defence. A countdown timer will speed this up. Which is unfortunate. As strategy lover I like to think about it. (Why not a gameplay option to set the timer length or the option to disable it?) After that the battle will start. Those battles are short but intense. To use special attack combo’s you need quite some accuracy and speed with your mouse. Which I found quit refreshing. Something good from a “console” port. The rpg component is a little weak. Throughout the story you will learn new moves. But there is nothing to find in de maps itself. So no surprises or collecting special stuff here. So did I like it? Yes but I give 3 stars (rounded above from 2.5) because of the “missing” and not changeable (control/gameplay) settings, some tedious click work during the storytelling and somewhat weak strategy (countdown timer) and rpg elements. It can become a 3.5 if the settings get an update.

Great Game, but a bad PC port

I'll start off with all the negative points: - The hightest possible resolution is 1920x1080, no 4k but at least a massive upgrade to the original DS resolution - There is only (exclusive) Fullscreen or Windowed mode, no Borderless Fullscreen - Keybinds (at least for mouse and keyboard) are fixed, you can't rebind anything - Some menu navigation sounds can't be controlled via the Ingam sound settings, Windows is already at 2% and yet some clicks blast my ears away - Translated text is partially cut of in both, menus and dialogues. - It seems like there's no way to access the settings from within the actual game, so if you missed changing the settings in the main menu, better Alt+F4 out and start it again - In general, there are also a lot of tiny bugs that might be gamebreaking if you're not careful enough, but it seems like you can avoid that pretty well So overall, a few more QOL improvements and more time spent on testing the game would have been nice. With all the negative points out of the way, I do want to really appreciate the people behind remastering the UI, character portraits and especially the soundtrack, you did an outstanding job trying to improve everything while maintaining the original look and feel of things. Very well done! So, in conclusion, it's nice to see an old game of my childhood again and for 79c I haven't lost anything anyway but you can definetly feel that the development was most likely rushed and there wasn't much time (if any at all) spent on testing it. At least it's playable so I'm still gonna try to finish it for nostalgia reasons.

Not for me.

Played about 30 minutes. Already bored and annoyed. Controls are poor. I don't like the characters; I'm already hoping for the enemy to win. Game resolution options are greyed out and stuck at 1024x768 even after changing the resolution in the registry. I can't see this becoming fun with more playtime.

I had fun, but is a pretty weak port

I'm not a fan of tower defense games (this one is the first one I have played in a very long time), but I gave this one a shot because I tried it very briefly on DS, is pretty much what I expected and had some fun. That said, there are some things about this game that I did not enjoy at all like the timer to build, which limits you greatly since before building you should be able to analyze the terrain (you cann cheese the system though, just start the battle phase and go back to the title screen and select continue, you'll start in the buildiong phase with whatever you alredy constructed) Also, the support for gamepad is pretty meh, sometimes it doesn't work on menus and every time I booted the game I had to go to the settings to enable the gamepad And that's pretty much it, I'm guessing this game will be too easy for hardcore TD fans, but for me it was alright, I won't lose sleep if we never get a sequel
