Classic, but not complete

I was hesitant to buy this without knowing which courses were included, as I know Access's Links series was released with only one or two courses included, and a wealth of other courses sold seperately. The description wasn't clear about that, but the screenshots suggested there were multiple courses included. I'm happy to report that the GOG release includes 18 courses, which is most but not all that were made available at the time. I assume some licensing troubles kept Cog Hill, Congressional, Oakland, Pelican Hill, Prairie, Valderrama, and Valhalla from inclusion. Besides the handful of missing courses that would have made this a complete collection, it is disappointing that they went with the "Pro" version rather than the superior Links 386 CD that included Flyby videos (which had also been in the Microsoft Golf deriviative products) and an option to include Bobcat Goldwait as your snarky caddie (which is a novelty I would recommend turning off after you've experienced it once). Why GOG went with the original release rather than the final iteration, I do not know. It's still an excellent selection of golf courses, and the simple mechanics remain enjoyable to play today. For me there's the added charm and nostalgia of revisiting the mid-90s Links series, which I first encountered with MS Golf 2.0 and an add-on disc of Riviera Country Club that my dad bought for our first PC. Back when Pentium was king.

Pretty good, despite its age

The graphics are surprisingly good for as old as this is, and being a dos box game. This version of links has a lot of courses to play on, You can create a male or female golfer, customize your club selection, practice any hole on any of the courses, or play a full 18. A word of caution: if you are used to the Tiger Woods swing mechanics, this isn't like that. You hold your left mouse button to set power, and then click at the bottom to (hopefully) swing straight. My one gripe is that club distance is not very consistent. You can try to hit 50% power i.e. on a 130 yard club, and the ball only goes 40 yards (yes this is factoring wind). There are many ways to customize your shots, including foot placement, swing type, etc... I think that overall, this would be a decent game for most that like golf games.

Reliving a core memory from my childhood

I remember playing a golf game at the computer at the local library but was never sure which game it was. Always thought it was maybe Microsoft Golf, but when I saw this screenshots fo this game, it brought back everything: The sounds, the graphics, 7 year old me trying to figure out how the swing worked. Now that I'm older, I still say the graphics hold up for a game from 1991/92. The computer knowing where your ball has landed when it is nothing but a pixel still amazes me and its beginner level is perfect for newbies and those that are like me who are playing it after so many decades. For me it's worth the price. There are tons of courses and the sounds are not blaring or interruptive, allowing the player to relax and enjoy a game of virtual golf.

20th Century Business Software

The swing meter feels very familiar, like riding a bike. Mulligans can be disabled from the start menu if you want to avoid temptation. I can't believe the number of courses that were included. I remember playing Harbor Town back in the day, so having this much choice is a luxury. The gui is ancient and was obviously made with business people in mind. I found it to be a refreshing change of pace compared to modern games. I love the VGA title page, which is an advertisement for Banff Springs, complete with their toll-free phone number. Links 386 Pro runs incredibly smooth. It's so smooth that I find myself feeling nostalgic for a vintage 386 drawing all of the trees one-by-one. So if the publisher is taking requests for DLC, i'd pay another dollar for an i386 slowdown mode, as long as it doesn't do it every time i press the redraw button. Overall, it's an instant time machine back to the 90s.
