Inspiration:

Legends of Amberland: The Forgotten Crown is a classic western RPG inspired by the games from the 90s. Basically, it’s the kind of game I personally find missing nowadays. Light, fairy tale, epic, heroic and slightly humorous. One that does not take tons of hours to complete or require endless grind to progress. Something that caters to players like me who don’t have tons of hours to beat one game but still like to play and have a sort of nostalgia for the way games were made in the old days.

It was inspired by Dungeon Master, Eye of The Beholder 2, Might & Magic 3-5, Crystals of Arborea (a not so well known prequel to Ishar series), GoldBox series (Champions of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn, etc).

Core Design Choices:

1) Classic, 90 degree rotation, FPP, turn-based, tile movement RPG.
2) Party-based (7 heroes, either predefined or manually assembled upon new game).
3) Open world with a big overworld to explore.
4) Fast paced combat. Quick travel. Easy inventory management. No grind.
5) Light, fairy tale like fantasy, epic story about heroes on a noble quest.

Mechanics:

Mechanically it’s 100% turn based (so you can go and make tea in the middle of a fight) with grid movement and 90 degree rotation. All this is very fast paced, both combat and travel is really fast. The goal was to cut down the boring parts and flesh out the fun parts.

Overall, the mechanics are pretty traditional and straightforward with modern additions like weightless bag combined with equipment encumbrance system.

World and Storyline:

Storyline is a fairy tale, mythical heroic fantasy. You are the good guys on a quest to fight the forces of evil. The world is non linear, with very few locked areas. You basically can go anywhere and do things in different order. In addition you can choose a different set of quests to finish the game (but those are not mutually exclusive, so you can finish all quests if you like). It’s more world driven than story driven. The priority was to make the world feel alive and let you explore it as you wish than follow a linear list of quests.

The game starts when the royal wizard finds out about an old crown that belonged to the royal family for generations. Yet, strangely no one ever heard about the crown and there was just a single mention of it in the royal annals. Upon further study he discovered that there has been cast a powerful spell of forgetfulness of unknown origin which caused everyone in the whole land to forget the crown ever existed. Without knowing who or why someone went to such trouble to conceal the existence of the crown he decided to investigate it. He summoned a party of noble heroes and tasked them with finding whereabouts of the mysterious crown and the origin of the spell.

FAQ:

Q: How long it takes to beat the game?

A: According to Early Access players it can take between 20 and 50 hours to finish the game (I estimate a typical playthrough would be 25-40 hours for most players).

Q: Can I create party members or are they predefined?
A: Yes, you can create all party members upon start if you wish (there is also a quick start option).

Dungeon-crawler with some flaws

Overall a pretty good retro open-world dungeon crawler. Multiple Difficulty level and the ability to create a party of 1 to 7 characters (needs to be enabled in the options) The overworld is sufficiently big with a lot of dungeons. After a finishing a certain side quest early on you can even fast travel to any tile you already explored. Sadly many dungeons are very same in layout. While mines and caves are usually mazes that differ from each other well enough, towers or castles usually share similar layout in sets of 3. E.G. Fire mage towers are have almost teh same rooms except of some walls at some places. And just like the samey towers you will find that duneon monsters are same for sets of 3 aswell. 3 goblin dungeons, 3 ogre dunegons... you get the idea. Another mixed bag is the music. The soundtrack is good and gives enough fantasy world feel, but the loops of each track is short which turns the soundtrack repetitive if not outright annoying. This becomes even more apparent since there is no combat music to break the repetitiveness of the soundtrack. My last gripe is with the sound design or more specifically when several or all your party members get hit by a multi target attack. The sound overlaps to a very loud noise which made me jump more than some jump scare based horror game. And yet despite the those flaws I enjoyed every second I played the game and it captures the style of Might and Magic 3 to 5 very well. Just a heads up, difficulty can spike greatly at about the halfwaypoint of the game. (enemies suddenly have 1000+hp compared to the enemies before with only half as much) Wasn't a downside for me, could be for others though.

Sold M&M like

If you've played any of the older Might and Magic games, this is certainly a throw back to 3 through 5 Assemble your party of 7 heroes and head out to hunt down the missing crown. The real meat of the game is exploring the world and uncovering clues and dungeons to delve through. Combat is fairly quick and very forgiving outside of a few specific encounters with dragons and some high level enemies you can encounter early on. Dungeon design isn't the greatest, but it's function and serves its purpose Overall the game can be beaten in about 10 or so hours, but you can extend that by exploring every nook and cranny along with hunting for hermits who can give your party some free stat boosts

Old-Style Overworld-Dungeon-Crawler-RPG

I like this game very much. It is a bit hard if you want to go straight throught, but you always see, where you are standing with Enemies (except that bad multiple-Eyeish-thing south of first island). I like the concept of fast leveling and character developement. I just find it a bit sad, that equipment doesn't have such a big influence on the chars. Otherwise very great design-concepts.

A Return to Classic

Legend of Amberland is a retro 80s/90s First Person Party RPG in the vein of Might and Magic, Wizardy, Eye of the Beholder. The game is a fantastic introduction to this classic style of RPG that you don't see very often anymore. The gameplay starts with you making your band of 7 heroes(with the option of less), then you set off into the world. The openworld is tile based so every movement counts as time past(shorter inside). There are no random encounters, all enemies can be seen before combat. Combat is fast turnbased, no slow Final Fantasy sitting through minute long animations As solid as Amberland is, I would have liked a bit more depth to it. The game emulates Eye of the Beholder more than MnM. Amberland definitely needs cutscenes with a big intro, middle scenes and ending. Though there are characters, none are memorable and are basic. You never get the real sense of looming danger, or being taunted by a big bag villain or force. There is no voice acting but that goes with the classic style but I would much prefer even charming early 90s style. Not that the world is empty but there are zero roaming friendly/neutral NPCs outside of enemies(they only move when you are close). The inside of anything is barren outside of chests, gems, switches, crystal balls, etc. The only character interaction are with doors that have a person behind it that will give you info or are quest important. I never saw any type of interior furniture, searchable items like a crate, wall, barrel, tomb, etc. You can only engage in combat point blank, no ranged attacks like in MnM. I would prefer limitations on your classes, i.e. pure mages can't use heavy armor. The game needs MORE animations and higher detailed characters and environments. In Amberland's case, the entire game just needs MORE MORE MORE Overall a good game, and if a sequel or another game in the series is made I HIGHLY suggest the developer take massive notes from MnM World of Xeen, MnM 6-8, and Arena/Daggerfall

M&M3-lite

Plays and feels like Might and Magic 3--truly impressive for something made by one single person. And it could have been the successor M&M-fans begged for but never got, except that it feels a bit rushed with overly simplistic features and content that is kind of a mixed bag. Controls: If you played M&M3, you'll find them all in the right place, even if the interface is more functional than elegant. It takes you straight back to the 90s and plays like the rightful heir has finally come home. Just the new hotkeys, like "r" for "attack", need a bit of getting used to. Content: You get a 100x120 squares map of sufficient size, that will keep you occupied for ~20 hours. There are a good two dozen dungeons and castles to explore, each with 1-3 (small) floors. Towns are menus where you may restock and level up. Music: Functional, but you will probably turn it off. Graphics: You get what you see in the pictures. They could have used a little more variety though. Difficulty: Easy. No puzzles or brain teasers, you always know what to do next. Cons: After a couple hours, the game starts to feel rushed or even unfinished. The mechanics are simple, skills and spells are almost too minimalist. Large regions are empty--like a huge meadow with nothing on it, large (empty) bodies of water and large mountain areas you can never enter. The difficulty of monsters jumps all over the place. The world would have needed a bit more flesh on its bare bones, a bit more imagination would have helped the repetitive locations a lot. The end feels as if the story ran out of ideas, and the final boss is arguably a rather whimsical affair. There is unrealized potential. All in all, despite its flaws, still a great game with a strong M&M3-vibe that fans will enjoy A LOT! The one thing this game desperately needs though is: A map editor.
