Description
Rif of the Fox Tribe has traveled far from home with his companion Rhene to compete in a puzzle contest. The night before the contest someone steals the wondrous Orb of Storms, an ancient relic of the Humans, and Rif is accused of being the thief. Rif is able to convince his accusers to give him a chance to find the real thief and recover the Orb. Two warriors are assigned to assist and guard Rif in his quest, Eeah of the Elk Tribe and Okk of the Boar Tribe. In addition, Rhene is held hostage by the Boar King to ensure Rif does not try to escape.

Your goal in Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb is to guide Rif on his adventure, find clues to locate the real thief, and solve challenges along the way. You can have Rif talk to Okk, Eeah, and other Morph characters that are encountered during Rif's travels. Rif can pick-up items he finds and give these items to others. Some will only trade information for precious items, although what a Morph considers precious can vary greatly. With your help, Rif will be able to clear his good name and rescue his beloved in this classic point-and-click fantasy adventure game!
  • Take part in interactive conversations that let you influence the outcome of the story.
  • Solve dozens of challenging puzzles while enjoying a unique musical score.
  • Over four hours of digitized speech and a beautiful art style.

Flawed and cut, but solid

Inherit the Earth is an orthodox adventure game using the SAGA system (Same system used in "I have no mouth). When I say orthodox I mean - same amount of verbs that the normal SCUMM system would use, same inventory system... but there are some interesting additions such as isometric levels and mazes similar to the ones in Monkey Island series. What about the plot? The plot is pretty standard - you are framed and well you have to clear your name. Sounds similar? It should. Although the investigation is more convoluted than your regular (fantasy) noir flick, it deliveres a solid amount of puzzles. Now here comes the hardest part - why do I mention that it's flawed and cut. Flawed cause it's a short game. And that shortness comes from many cut things that were meant to be in the game but were ultimately left out due to time. In the developer interviews that followed the game release, Dreamer's Guild people said that "The game was meant to be mature and larger, but the NWC execs wanted a fairy tale game, so the adult elements were downplayed." Shame really. Another shame is that the game was meant to be a part of a trilogy but due to the low sales of the first game we might not see the conclusion of the trilogy and what we are left with is a cliffhanger ending. Shame really.

Good but not great.

This is a fairly good adventure game. You can't catch yourself unable to continue, and the logic puzzles are not harsh. I enjoyed it. However, there is a lot of walking and there are a lot of people you can talk to that don't provide anything but ambiance. You will find yourself having to talk to a lot of rabbits or walking around a lot of open area. The game also suffers from the fact it was meant to be continued and that it had developer/distributor conflicts. Definitely worth a try at this price.

It's no Loom, But..

ITE is a wonderful little Classic PCAG of the time, with good puzzles, resonably good Voice acting, and a storyline that, while on the surface seems to be your general "Fairytale for the kids", belies a really mysterious post-human world in which the characters inhabit. Once you've finished the game, there's a webcomic that continues the story, and Wyrmkeep have plans for a sequel in the near future.

Charming but flawed

This game has many cons. Most of gameplay consist of searching for a single object lying on the vast area. A lot of map walking, vast but wasted empty spaces, many labyrinths. Not much my taste. Messed interface, sporadic bugs, your companions are rarely usefull. Medieval world is interesting but in my opinion futuristic additions ruin it. Yet still it has it own charm and I really enjoyed it. The main protagonist is a likable fella and I really wanted to help him. Game takes about 6 hours to finish.

Far from perfect, but still good.

There were a lot of things that I absolutely loved about this game. The setting is really neat, and the puzzles (for the most part) are above average. In addition, there are tons of things that are just good. In terms of adventure games, the gameplay is much less cryptic than the average, and most actions make sense. But, unfortunately, there were many parts that were aggravating and pointless. Here's all the issues I experienced: The Mac installer is broken in a really odd way. It installs the game perfectly fine, but when run, it asks for the user to insert the CD-ROM. Oddly enough, the CD version wasn't supposed to have any copy protection at all, even in the retail version. I ended up taking the files out and plopping them into SCUMMVM, which worked flawlessly. The remainder of the issues are in the game itself, and not technical. The location "Rat Cave" is fine to walk through once, but due to its length, the number of times you need to walk through it is painful, but by no means the end of the world. The "Dungeon Maze" just isn't great. It's also not my biggest problem. The "Dog Castle" is the worst location in the game. It comes in at about 30% of the way through the game, and is absolutely atrocious. A walkthrough is necessary, as this is a horribly long maze with nothing in the means of landmarks, and a confusing camera angle. While content wise, it isn't the largest part of the game, it is by far the most time consuming. I hate this part. And, at the end of the maze (provided you reach the correct exit) you get the second worst part of the game. There is one area that is heavily dependent on luck, and in order to get a necessary quest item, you must try repeatedly to do something (that I will not say due to spoilers.) After this, it's back to the maze. Ugh. Once you're out though, the game really picks up. Big time. It goes from good, to awful, to great, all in the span of a maze. One last note: the publisher-mandated rewrites are VERY obvious.
