MEET A NOT-SO-ORDINARY NUN

INDIKA is a third-person, story-driven game set in a strange world where religious visions clash with harsh reality. It tells the story of a young nun who sets off on a journey of self-discovery with the most unusual, horn-headed companion by her side.

On the outside, Indika seems to be a typical nun attempting to adjust to a difficult and monotonous monastery life. Humble and innocent in her appearance, do not be deceived as this young girl has also made a highly unlikely acquaintance—as she speaks with the devil himself.

Indika’s unusual connection with the Evil One leads her on an errand beyond the safe walls of the monastery. The world she discovers can only be described as a wild combination of comedy and tragedy straight out of the novels by Dostoyevski and Bulhakov.

ENJOY AN INDIE GAME WHERE EVERYTHING GOES

The subjects of religion and authority are prevalent throughout Indika’s journey and she’ll be faced with many questions along the way. Guide her to find the answers one by one before she can finish her life-defining odyssey.

Odd Meter is a small, independent studio formerly based in Moscow and now operating out of Kazakhstan. Its members put aesthetics at the forefront and aren’t afraid to tread the fine line of ethical norms. Their game is a great testament to that, as INDIKA constitutes an open challenge to the industry's established approach to creating video games.

Playable experimental avant-garde film

A surprisingly thoughtful (and surreal) narrative-focused adventure that tackles the issues of faith (and crisis thereof), temptation, goodness, conformity, humility, shame, redemption, and all that jazz set in a semi-fictional 19th(ish) century Russia. A very NARRATIVE focused game, and gameplay is almost exclusively used to move the story. There are stretches where it is essentially a walking sim, where you move through set pieces, taking in the narrative. The same applies to puzzles, a lot of which are very simple, and involve nothing more than putting certain objects in certain places, but some are more engaging. Storytelling is VERY visual, and it does look great. The framing, the angles, the blocking, of the scenes works really well. It is by no means a full-on horror, but the combination of the dream-like visuals and audio cues is unsettling, where you can tell that SOMETHING is just ever so slightly off in, but can't always tell WHAT. The superb voice acting, ESPECIALLY by Silas Carson, also helps, although the subtitles could have been better. One thing that I am slightly sad about is that ultra-widescreen is supported during gameplay but the cutscenes are letterboxes, even if they are in-engine, though I kinda see why, given the extra deliberate camera placement. Other than that the game is surprisingly stable. I didn't encounter any crashes or major glitches, apart from animation hiccups, and had no problem hitting 60+ fps. It is also not a very long game. Without dawdling you can finish it in about 4.5 hours. But if you pause to take in the visuals, immerse yourself in the setting, and not rush, it can be anything from 6 to 10 hours. Although I might replay some sequences for certain "blink-and-you-miss-it" moments, it isn't a game that holds a huge amount of replay value. As a bonus a part of the sales revenue is donated to help children in Ukraine, if you had concerns over that (though I haven't seen any notice of that in the game itself).

Hallelujah !

This game is a very fascinating piece of an art. Almost as if in parallel universe Nietzsche went for a beer with Monty Python guys and during the heavy drinking and brainstorming they'd decided to churn out this. Don't get fooled though, this game also manages to carry out some very strong moments. It really gets addictive with every minute you play it. The story is original. The developers took the Religion matter on a whole new level and I love it. It was a bold move. They took a risk and they delivered a fantastic game. The characters are well-written. The voice acting is top tier. I love the interactions between Indika and the Devil. His lines are funny as hell... See what I did there ? The puzzles/mini-games are inspired by the old arcade games we used to play a looong time ago. I saw that a lot of people weren't so happy about them. Me, personally, I liked them a lot. The soundtrack is brilliant. The music is a mix of drama and that specific arcade games music. I had a lot of fun with this game. I think the developers were on some good stuff while they were making it but the final product is GENIUS. A must-play for every gamer. Looking forward to seeing more games from the team.

Nothing else like it

Indika is an exploration of faith, viewed through a funhouse mirror that reflects back on itself. Gameplay is mostly 3rd-person over-the-shoulder walking, with light puzzle elements, occasionally broken up by pixel-art sequences. But really no one should play this for the gameplay; the important thing is the characters, the story, and how the story is told. Indika is a fascinating character, as is the companion she meets on her travels. Some people may be put off by the short play time (I finished it in a few hours), but IMO it's still well worth the price for such a unique experience. Does have scenes of violence and sexual assault, although nothing is explicitly shown.

A game well done

I liked the game's concepts. Very refreshing nowadays. The story was very well done, sprinkled with secrets -I could not find them all. Only downside is the story is short, but maybe they will add more to it in DLCs (??).

Great atmosphere

I would give it 4 stars, as the controls in the "platforming parts" are a bit janky, but the art direction and vision are so strong and unique that they need to be rewarded with a perfect score. Definitely a slow-burn, even for its short duration, but a highly recommended experience nonetheless. I played with VO in Russian (which I do not speak) and it only added to the atmopshere.
