Disappointing, but could be fixed

Okay, so I got a lotta love for this game, but this version isn't it. Notable differences: 1. No audio for the messages during the campaign. The original game has full voice acting for nearly every message in the game. 2. I cannot use all hotkeys, particularly the ones that control game speed (1,2,3,space). They don't work, and the tutorial says you can use them but they don't work. Some other hotkeys work, like the arrow keys and function keys for Research and Diplomacy, but not being able to control speed with keyboard is nearly game breaking. It was certainly used in the original release. (I have contacted support) 3. Minor issue, but why are there no icons on the buttons for the galaxy viewer. Yes, you can hover to see a tooltip describe its function, but nothing at all? Look at the screenshots above, and they are all blank. There's more than just these too, but these stuck out. I want to love this game, but this port is lacking some very important features that were in the original. I can't recommend this until these basic features are reimplemented. It would also be nice to customize hotkeys, and change resolution in-game, but those extra features that weren't in the original and can understand if that isn't an option. I will be happy to reevaluate upon release of an update that addresses these problems.

Patched!

Just chiming in that the glaring issues (1-2-3, speech audio, starmap icons) have been fixed. Finished two of the three campaigns and as far as I can tell this is the exact same title that blew my mind almost two decades ago. Destructor Ray is still hilariously overpowered, one planet can still burn money faster than the rest of the galaxy generates it, campaign events are still poorly paced, tank AI/pathfinding is still terrible and none of it is enough to put a dent in the 5/5 rating IG2 deserves. "Satisfaction" doesn't begin to describe the feeling of your foe losing half their colonies to revolts as their leader becomes your spies' latest victim, yet the gameplay is so smooth you don't even realize how much you missed espionage after finishing a game as the Kra'Hen (whose notion of subtlety is analogous to a rocket launcher).

Great game, not so great version.

First off I want to say, like many others I've been waiting for this game to hit GOG for a very long time now and I absolutely do not regret the purchase and would encourage anyone to purchase it as well. There are caveats though. This is NOT the original version. Now I know what some might say "What are you talking about!? YES IT IS!" well, no it's not. Awhile back (I think a year or two ago now) IG2 was 're-released' for tablets/phones. I actually bought it for the phone because while I own the original disc version it isn't very Windows 7 friendly. The tablet version was basically the original with updated HD graphics and control schemes to make it functional for mobile. THAT is what this version is. That isn't to say it is significantly different from the original, quite the contrary. The thing is because this version is that version it has a few issues that clearly need to be worked out such as resolution issues that require editing a config file to fix (Not difficult so not a priority) as well as hotkeys not working properly. (namely the speed keys which if you're an old school player of IG2 you'll know they're absolutely essential) The positives are that the graphics being HD look a crapload better than the original. They are smooth and crisp and the game actually plays very well in that. Now one additional change that I wasn't going to mention but I decided I would is that the multiplayer has been changed. I tried it locally with two computers to see how it worked and the truth is I'm not entirely sure what the design intent behind the multiplayer is, it seems to be like many older RTS games such as WC3 where it limits you to ONLY LAN play. As in there doesn't appear to be any DIRECT IP play now. Which coincidentally means no internet play (without GOG Galaxy? not sure) unless you use VPN/tunneling. A slight disappointment, but better than no multiplayer like the tablet version. Still a 100% worthwhile buy. Will give 5 stars when issues are fixed.

Finally on GOG... But...

At last after all the demand by the users, IG II is available for purchase on GOG and STEAM. At the time I played only the demo that came in a disk of a magazine , but I believe it was the demo that I played the most that I remember. I never forgot the soundtrack, the pleasure that I had amassing a strong fleet to conquer other planets, researching that awesome tech, diplomacy and spying on my opponents (this in the demo only), constructing buildings on the planet surface and see them in real time being built and placed on the surface is a wonderfull thing. The ship design was extremely intuitive to use, the diplomacy have a lot of options to use like improve relationship before declaring truce, ceasefire or peace, you can send spys to steal tech, sabotage, start a rebellion, kill other spys, steal money. The fact that you have to destroy the planets defenses in order to invade it with your tanks was new to me (I never played a 4x game before IG II demo so I can´t comment on that being new to the genre or not). The combat is in real time (like the game itself) but you can pause and issue orders. The graphics aged very well in my opinion. This game is in my opinion one of the most complete 4x games ever. Almost everything you think on a 4x game is there. But as soon I start playing the tutorial mode in the GOG version, something was odd. When the tutorial tells you to press 1-3 number keys to change speed, nothing happened. The same with the space bar to pause. And when I got to part 2 of the tutorial mode, the section that tells you to press PAGE UP/DOWN to change planets, I keep pressing them and nothing happens. Tried the numpad lock on and off but nothing, no change of planet. I had to skip the tutorial because we actually need to press thoses keys to continue. I also noticed that the text of the tutorial and in game messages don´t have voiceover, wich I think they had on the DEMO version. For all of this, I only give 3 stars until this problems are fixed. Its not an unplayable game if you ignore these things, but you spend more time with micromanagement of the speed and going from one planet to another unnecessarly.

Timeless masterpiece

Imperium Galactica 2 is, even at the time of writing this review, the absolute closest you will get in seamlessly merging the pacing of RTS with the deep strategic and tactical gameplay of turn based 4x games like Master of Orion and the Galactic Civilizations series. It did all this in 1999 and so far no other RTS game has equaled it in many gameplay aspects. It has limited space colony building, population management (how much population you have determines how much of your base you can actually run), ground combat, ship customization, research, diplomacy(unless you are playing the Kra'Hen who only negotiate and trade with the business end of their weapons), and even full blown exploration. That's right. at the beginning of the game you don't even know where the other stars are! You have to discover them through your network of ship and planetary sensors. And unlike some other great 4x RTS games of late, you can actually move around the galaxy freely. No spacelanes in this game! The best thing, it has been made compatible with Windows 10 (the original CD version already had trouble running on Windows 7, let alone 10!) AND Linux, allowing you to play this masterpiece of Digital Reality seamlessly on any modern PC. If you like games like MOO, GalCiv, and SoaSE, this is a Must Buy!
