Description
Do you have the necessary ambition and skills required to carve up underdeveloped nations and expand your country’s sphere of influence? Then go forth and conquer the world using any and all means available to you. Exploit the New World for its cornucopia of riches and resources as you race towards imperial supremacy over the entire world. You won’t be alone in your endeavors, however, as your Ministers are there to give useful advice whilst you retain the ultimate control over the fate of your nation and, eventually, the entire world.

Imperialism offers turn-based strategic gameplay in either a randomly generated world or in a scenario based on historic events. Choose from seven industrial powers including Great Britain, Hungary, Sardinia, Italy, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire and three different points of historical interest: the very beginnings of imperialism in 1820, in 1848 which was the year of tumultuous revolutions, or in 1882 and the nascent beginnings of the arms race that led up to the Great War. Take the reins of command and remake history as you dominate the world in Imperialism!
  • An ingenious AI provides and maintains a unique strategic personality for each of the Major Powers.
  • Cabinet Ministers assist you in various ways with advice and direction, depending on the difficulty level.
  • Use the subtle art of diplomacy or the equally effective art of trade as you forge alliances or dominate your enemies.

Unlike what you know and one of the best

This is not an RTS or a 4X or a turn-based strategy game. Not really. It is wonderful, reasonably accurate and most importantly fun simulator of the industrial revolution and the subsequent imperialism. And while there are armies and fleets, they only play a minor role. I always come back to this game, after all this time. You are the appointed leader of a major power at the beginning of the industrial revolution. Your job is it to develop your country's industry by tapping into its resources by building a good infrastructure and transport network and building an industry. This is a game of commerce and the power that comes with it. You gather or and especially import raw materials that can be processed into various products, which you then sell again on the world market or use for expanding your industry again. Intricate web of dependencies form, smaller countries become trade creditors, dependent on you or are wooed by the major powers if they are a valuable market. Commerce dictates politics, the weak fall to the strong. Wars break out, fought with trade sanctions and grants or with weapons. It is a brilliant system, easy to learn yet very very deep. The game also comes with some scenarios based on the historical period but the best games a certainly on the randomly generated maps. The gameplay mechanics are superbly designed, resulting a natural fit of subject and rules. Also, it subject is still surprisingly on spot. This is not an age long passed despite today's lack of open imperialism, our world order is still governed by the same rules of commerce, exploitation and capitalism. I also want to add that even the multiplayer mode is great. Since everybody is taking turns at the same time, there are no akward waits or much downtime, making Imperialsim-LAN parties a real joy. You even save the multi-game, a feature that many games still lack today. In short, this is a game that has lost nothing of its charme or depth, a game that holds up just as well today and a game that you need to buy.

Simply the Badass Grandpa

Imperialism, is still a game I ve meticilously kept in my harddrive over a decade. Whenever I felt my history glands started working and I wanted to feel the power in my hands, I would start a game, if i wanted an easy smashing I would choose England, be a rich bastard, and enjoy it mightily when I can literally buy off every country. Or I can choose Russia, for a long and hard campaign, and have fun when you roll your tanks over London... I am not gonna tell about how it achieves these.. Just buy and enjoy.

The name says it all

This was my first turn-based strategy game (at the time I didn't even know how this genre was called) and I got it as a free bonus CD from a magazine. So I didn't know what to expect. This game was so good I didn't stop playing for several months, and it made my dad happy for once, as I wasn't playing some "violent game" (namely Doom at the time). There is also something relaxing about this game: the color palette, the music, the sound effects, the pace of the game, all create a very pleasant atmosphere that puts you into a good mood.

A great game!

One of the best turn-based strategy games I ever played, only improved upon in Imperialism 2. The production team really cared about this title and frankly, it shows in the final product.* I have played this game hundreds of times and still own the original release CD. Like most political AI's it's somewhat rudimentary on that front, but not out of line with any product of it's day and not far off from current implementations, imho. My hats are off to SSI mgmt for green-lighting this one! :-) SSI Webmaster (at the time) * I am biased, I still have my Imperialism coffee cup and Box art mock up, and I designed the original official web site for the product. But I also know they cared because I interacted with the associate producer and other publisher side assets daily.

Absolutely Fabulous

The guys at Frog City created one of the best strategy games of all time, in my opinion, with this game that for the most part depends on the player's skill in resource allocation, a smart economy and diplomacy with the 'minor nations'. 20 years after it was published I still wheel it out from time to time. It's quite a deviation from the Civilization style of 4x games, great fun, and worth every cent. Having said that, I can also not in any way disparage Imperialism II, a game that radically changed some of the predecessor's mechanism, yet turned out a great game in its own right. By the bye: There was a lively discussion forum with the developers very engaged at the time - hosted on Ubisoft's servers. Until Ubisoft one day simply shut the servers down, without any notice: even the developers of this game were left in the dark until it happened. Again, Ubisoft did something similar when they simply shut down the multiplayer server for SSG's Warlords II. Which is why I don't buy new Ubisoft product any more: they cannot be trusted to support their gamers, customers, or not-in-house developers. :-(
