A worthy successor to a Fantastic game

I still remember the reason I got the original Icewind Dale. I was simply bored out of my mind, disappointed with Diablo II, and looking for more Baldur's Gate while waiting for the sequel to be released. Icewind Dale had a unique flavor that distinguished it from the other Infinity Engine games, and a fast-paced, svelte system that still makes it an eye-opener in this world of 3-D everything games. The soundtrack, also, was arguably the best of any game I've seen. Icewind Dale II is good enough that I'd call it a worthy successor. Like Baldur's Gate II it carries on in the flavor of the original, but with improvements to increase replayability. These improvements are largely comprised of a change to the 3rd Ed. D&D rules. In this regard, the game does a fair job at approximating them. I would say it's roughly comparable to Neverwinter Nights, though there of course are some major differences since you can control up to 6 characters. The gameplay is pretty similar to the original, with less Fed-Ex quests and more good old-fashioned slaughter. The plot is still very much linear, but there's many ways you can go about meeting NPC's requests. One of these ways is to simply kill them all and take their stuff (though you might not always want to). There are quite a few new spells, and although the game lacks metamagic feats you can do things like spontaneous casting, domain spells, and wizard school specialization. All the old summoning spells have been upgraded as well, so they are actually useful at higher levels. Lastly, the 'Heart of Fury' mode is embellished with better weapons and items to make chopping down the horde less impossible. Your characters can advance to level 30, up to level 20 in any one class. It doesn't quite follow the epic level rules, but you'll probably be glad for the extra hit dice, since the only way to get that high is HoF mode. I think that most of you shouldn't be discouraged because the game doesn't have any spectacular 3D visuals to offer, because the sound qualities truly make up for all of that. They create are really exciting atmosphere and the huge variety of character voiceovers also does the trick. On an overall note, thanks to the enhanced character creation system, you now have a chance to make a unique-looking RPG hero of you very own. After creating your ideal character, you're faced with a challenge of properly using all of his/her potentials. Immersed in a good story, slicing enemies, completing quests, advancing you group's experience, are all elements that will keep you going in Icewind Dale 2 and they represent game's essential qualities. These features are all well-balanced and can guarantee some long hours of fun RPG fun. Not to mention that for this low price, you cannot go wrong, play this game

Magical the whole time through

I eagerly anticipated the coming of Icewind Dale 2 to GOG, as I had heard many good things about it, and I prefer the 3e ruleset over 2e any day. I have been playing the game avidly over the past few days, and, unfortunately, have come close to the end of the game. From the first goblins I killed in Targos, I have been pleased with the battle mechanics, though they were of little difference from previous IE games. The quests were fairly fleshed out, considering this game's focus on combat. My favorite part of the game, however, has been the huge amount of spells available. Five out of the six members of my party are casters, and every time I leveled up, I was eager to see what spells they could now cast. My sorcerer learned to fling fireballs and ice storms around to weaken the enemies for the others, my bard learned to debuff enemies and support the party with spells like Emotion: Hope, my druid learned to set things on fire when she could not deal with an enemy with her mighty spear, and my cleric could buff the party for dealing with tough bosses. I have just been enchanted with the game the whole time through, and it has never gotten old. The one minor annoyance I have found is the lack of 3D acceleration, which causes some slowdown when lots of spell effects are onscreen. Aside from that minor issue, I heartily recommend this game to any hack'n'slash fan.

Good game but..

As many have said, the game is a decent successor to the original Icewind Dale. Yes, the game has an excellent character creation system and the spells are superb. However, the game at certain points grows very tedious- for example the Fell Wood or the lower part of Dragon's Eye were just not enjoyable. Toward the end of the game, I just felt like it was pointless to continue on playing the game as the experience from monsters is scaled to your level, and you are just killing them to get them out of the way. For example, if you are level 10 and you kill say an orc or a goblin, you get no experience. Whereas, if you are level one, you get the full experience. Also, the atmosphere of the game was good but the original felt "colder" and had more of an epic feel to it. Also, I felt like the "great" items in the game were kind of tacked on just to make your party competitive with the enemies. In all, this is a very good game but I would say its probably the worst of the Infiniti Engine games. I tried playing it a few times but just couldn't bring myself to finish it-- I just stopped caring.

Incredible

My computer never played Neverwinter Nights, so I was stuck in 2nd edition for a long time. Then I stumbled across this gem running 3e using the Infinity Engine. Naturally, I bought it off eBay and played it for a week straight. Amazing game, great storyline, tons of extras and (as I found out my 3rd time through) great replay value. The same holds true over ten years later, and I spend many sleepless nights figuring strategies past monsters that don't get easier as you progress. I've played this game all the way to the end more times than I care to admit, and it never disappoints. I still listen to every word spoken by an NPC, and even though I don't have it memorized like the opening to BG2 (Do you even realize your potential?!) it's comforting to hear again and to know that even if my computer gets fried GOG.com has me covered.
