Save the world as DevTech Labs' fearless intern, Dewey Owens in HYPERGUN! A fast-paced roguelite shooter centering around a procedural weapon of questionable effectiveness, it's up to Dewey to master the ultimate combat simulator. Fighting through waves of alien interlopers in a simulation designed to create the ultimate weapon, players will unlock exciting new classes all while gaining powerful abilities in their journey to create the HYPERGUN!
Features
Fast paced, FPS Rogue-lite gameplay
Create the HYPERGUN - With over 150 weapon modules to collect, no two runs in the simulation will be the same. Each module you pick up will change your weapon in exciting and sometimes questionable ways, all in the name of determining the ultimate weapon to defeat our alien oppressors.
Procedural Levels - Fight through increasingly difficult simulated arenas which are randomly generated with each playthrough.
Alien Horde - Take on a host of (simulated) vicious alien invaders, recreated in immaculate detail.
Badass Bosses - Throw down against epically powerful bosses at the end of each level to put your skills and weapon to the test.
Unlockable Classes and Abilities - Unlock your co-worker's simulation profiles to gain access to a selection of more than 40 unique abilities to gain the upper hand in the simulation.
Office Politics - Explore the DevTech offices as the intern Dewey Owens, who's somehow managed to sneak in over the weekend. Even at the end of the world, there's time to track down passive aggressive post-it notes from coworkers.
Your Mission
The year is 2038, and a highly advanced alien race has occupied planet Earth. Humanity is at its breaking point, and the fate of the human race now depends on the top-secret HYPERGUN program: a highly advanced simulation that is designed to create the ultimate weapon to combat the alien oppressors by combining weapon components across countless simulations.
The intern at DevTech Labs, Dewey Owens, has managed to sneak into the facility over the weekend (even at the end of the world, we still need weekends!). Is he trying to prove himself to Roger, the hard-nosed CEO, or is he up to something nefarious? We may never know, but he just might save the world along the way.
Don't recommed. Feels very basic. Enemies, levels and parts are repetitive, levels are very bland. The gameplay loop doesn't feel very rewarding, too. Gunplay is average. Wait until it's half price or less.
Meh, I have about 5-7 hours playtime and I feel I have a decent "feel" for the game and the content presented, so I'd say that for the intial asking price of $14.99, its kind of a hard sell. I tend to agree with the previous review: the content is a little sparse hopefully thhat changes with updates, but what we have here is a little barren but as a quick time sink, it can be pretty enjoyable in short bursts. The shooting mechanics are, well servicable, and the graphical options are fairly decent for a game developed in the Unity engine. The obvious star of the show here is the OST, which is very good and suits the games art style. Other sounds are rather bland, almost completely not even worth noting. On a side not, I'd like to see maybe some procedural generation applied to the bosses as well, as fighting the same boss at the end of the same level over and over again can really feel tedious and makes me second guess another run from time to time. If this whole package were available for an intial price of say, $9.99, then most of the gripes could be absolved because of the cheaper asking price. At 15 bucks? The barren content for this price starts to come to the forefront a bit more. I'd wait for a sale, wait for some updates maybe. Could be a game to keep your eyes on, right now though, again, its a bit of a hard sell.
Its kinda fun and flashy when you start, but seems really repetitive after the second game. The attachments seem kinda silly, which isnt bad, but im not sure what kind of style this game is going for.
Hypergun is almost eerily devoid of fans or discussion- there are no guides, no cheat codes, almost no forums, even here on GOG the number of people who have left a review of Hypergun can be counted on one hand (and that's including the review I'm writing right now). It's like the game was released and nobody noticed.
Hypergun is an FPS roguelike, with the premise that you're an intern at a gun company using computer simulations to invent the perfect gun to fight off an alien invasion. These guns are made by slapping together random and wacky attachments onto a basic gun frame and seeing if the combinations work. There's a little bit of strategy involved (you can swap out gun parts if you find a new one for the same slot), but for the most part it's complete luck whether you get a decent gun or not. The levels are simple but have a consistent neon-rainbow-chrome look to them, the music is energizing, and the enemies, while there are only a handful of different types, each present a unique challenge.
Unfortunately, the game is extremely difficult and unbalanced. There are numerous bugs (a particularly annoying one makes your gun invisible), the game is almost unwinnable (I played it over 100 times and only got to the final level once, where I immediately died in the first room because I got stuck on the terrain in a corner), and the enemy drops of "bits" (which you can use to buy items) and health packs are too stingy.
Enemies can also drop "hypercoins" which you can use to buy attachments or character classes and abilities outside the sim, but even after you've bought everything they still drop, now completely useless- couldn't they reward you for all that effort by making them bits instead? There's also a gallery that shows all the attachments you've found, but completing it would take far more time than anyone would ever invest in a game this basic. The game is briefly fun, but without more content and a fair chance of actually finishing it, it feels hollow.
i actually really wanted to like this game. it seems interesting from Screenshots and Trailers and such.
however the Enemies are so-so, but most importantly, is that the Weapon Parts you go through, are just largely uninteresting.
and by this i mean that most of the Weapon Parts just don't feel good to use or feel like there is little difference with or without. or, quite a few Parts just felt like downgrades to even have, without a relevant upside to them.
you can unlock more Parts and maybe those are more interesting but.... i'm not going to grind through a game for dozens of hours or more to 'unlock the fun'.
if it doesn't feel interesting to start off with, hard to convince the Player to go the extra mile.
Boss #2 (since they go in order as far as i could tell) was legitimately cool, though. though Boss #1 just felt tedious and like nothing was happening for most of the encounter.
also Mouse Input always feels a little bit weird in this game. the Audio mix is almost painful and forces me to turn the game down very low so that i can ignore most of the Audio.
one may be surprised at how GPU intensive the game seems to be for what it is.
