Description
In the world of the Heretic Kingdoms, a world where God is dead and religion heresy, you are cast as a young female inquisitor, working to stamp out the last remnants of religion. On instructions to destroy a relic which the Inquisition considers to be a significant threat, you are drawn into a war between two warring secret societies – a conspiracy of mages whose goal is true power, and a shadowy cult who seeks to resurrect the Dead God.

As the story progresses, you will be placed in an amoral world and left to decide your own morality. Just like the real world, your actions have consequences, and it is up to you to decide if you can live with them or not. Play as an altruistic heroine, a vicious and selfish egotist, or just a woman trying to get her job done – your actions will lead you to one of six different endings depending on where you decide your loyalties lie. Will you crush religion underfoot, or become its savior? Only you can decide!
  • An engaging story line written by a script team lead by critically acclaimed game writer and designer Chris Bateman (Discworld Noir, Ghost Master)!
  • Features a simple but rewarding combat system that keeps the action flowing thick and fast.
  • A vast world to explore containing around fifty locations, scores of unique monsters, and tons of loot!

A decent unknown gem

I have this game on CD and it runs fine on my Win7 PC. It's nice to see GoG bring this game out, since hardly anyone even knows about it. Heretic Kingdoms is an epic ARPG with a story line that actually makes sense and leaves you wanting to play again. The controls are very intuitive, unlike some older games. The graphics are nothing to write home about, but they serve their purpose well. Combat can be challenging especially in the beginning. The thing that makes Heretic Kingdoms a GoG candidate is the story line. It's like you're playing Diablo II with more moral decisions. If you're a fan of ARPG's you really should give this game a try.

Definitely worth your time

I came across the demo of this when it first came out, only to dig it up a couple of years ago in a bargain bin. The mostly-text dialogue and the graphics may show their age by now, but the game is solid - so solid that I played it 2 or 3 times in a row just to try to access more endings. You do get the impression that your choices have real consequences in-game and the end is a satisfying wrap-up (not to mention multiple). The weapon and upgrade system is novel and useful, but doesn't require you to focus only on builds. I'd buy it and play it all again if I had anywhere near the time required.

The Dream World is worth it!

I played the European version (Kult: Heretic Kingdoms) a long time ago and really liked it. The attunement system, where your weapon gets better the more you use it is nice, but the concept I liked the most was the Dream World. (And I'm surprised no other reviews mention it yet.) It's a mechanic I always wanted to see in a game: your character can step between a "normal" and a "dream" world. Some entities are only present in one of them, some can switch (like you), some are in both at the same time. This can be used to evade enemies (literally walking through them in the dream world, if they can't enter it), attuning your weapons or finding ghosts normally invisible. While it may not be a perfect game, this alone, and a good ending, were worth it for me.

Lacking in Everything

Seeing how positive the other reviews were, I expected a much more accomplished game. Sadly, Heretic Kingdoms is hugely lacking in polish, and even its supposed strenghs -- the story and the writing -- are dissapointing. The dialogues are superficial, and the characters have little to no personality. The overall storyline isn't too bad, but the world doesn't bring it alive. The graphics are poor, but for me personally that isn't a concern. The combat is dull and repetitive, your enemies run straight at you, the 'attunement' system provides hardly any excitement at all, while the clunky interface does little to smooth things over. Frankly, even by the 'old school' standards the overall impression is very, very weak. Baldurs Gate 1 still plays better, functions better, and the 'writing team' could learn a thing or two about creating dialogues from the old classics. Overall, Heretic Kingdom is a cheap game, and it provides you with very cheap thrills. If you don't care about the quality of writing, the storyline doesn't interest you very much, and you're just looking to spend an evening randomly clicking on mindless enemies, you might get a kick out of this.

Rare and sparkling gem!

I have already finished this game years ago since I own the retail version. This is a well-written action rpg with mystical atmosphere and weird lore. Also, it has a quite unique and innovative leveling system allowing for some great character building. Highly recommended!
