"People are strange when you're a stranger." - Jim Morrison, The Doors.

Welcome to Harvest. It's a quiet little town with eccentric locals and traditional family values. Life moves at a slower pace in quiet Harvest without the hustle and bustle like you'd get in the big city. Don't forget to attend the annual PTA Bake Sale and keep in mind that the blood drive is mandatory.

Harvester is one of the most controversial horror games of its time with a classic point-and-click interface and tons of interesting puzzles. You'll play as the amnesiac Steve (who is such a kidder!) as you try to figure out why you should join the Order of the Harvest Moon and discover the horror that lurks just beneath Harvest's small-town veneer. Meet some of the strangest characters to ever grace the computer screen--such as Mr. Pottsdam who really, really loves red meat or Colonel Monroe who guards the nuclear missile base and holds The Button. Harvest is a lovely town and the locals aim to keep it that way, no matter the cost...
  • Play Harvester the way it was meant to be played: completely uncensored!
  • Written and directed by Gilbert P. Austin of Wing Commander and Strike Commander fame!
  • Perform random acts of sabotage, blackmail, murder, evidence tampering, and many more innocent pranks!
  • Meet characters that defy categorization due to their rather unique personalities!

Smarter than you think

I palyed the original when it was released (still have the boxed version) and was thoroughly enjoying it. Despite having a reputation of being a gorefest this is actually a very intelligent adventure game that is full of references to various fields of popular culture like obscure horror movies, literature etc. The story itself is actually engaging right up til the end and full of sick twists and outrageous scenes that often make you laugh out loud in surprise. The characters are surreal and hilarious at the same time. The game mechanics like moving and and fighting are a bit letdown and have not aged well but in no part do they become frustrating nor a distraction from story. The puzzles are all inventory based and consist in finding and using various items to accomplish tasks given by various characters. So don't let you fool yourself by the notorious reputation this game has for its violent visuals. It's a very intelligent game with challenging story made for an intelligent and culturally educated player.

Twisted Classic. Play it to believe it!

Thank you so much for getting this game GOG!! Been waiting for it for a long time! :) Anyway, I actually have a big box copy of this game, and it's the most insane game I've ever played. You wake up in this freaky little pseudo-50's town called Harvest, and everybody is a little bit...strange. Think of Twin Peaks for a good comparison. You play as Steve, and you're a complete amnesiac. The game revolves around completing a series of tasks to gain entry into the Lodge, this massive building in the center of town, so you can fight your way through the Lodge and join the order of the Harvest moon. Not surprisingly though, this town isn't at all what it seems to be...Yes, the game has faults. It can be stupidly difficult sometimes, my CD copy crashed every now and then (though I was playing it on Windows 7 through DOSBox, so that could be the problem, and GOG tends to work out bugs in their releases :D ) but you'll never, EVER play another game like this! There's moments and characters in this game you'll never forget. And while this game is a classic, don't play it if you're under 17. Extreme violence, gore, sexual themes, racism, loads and loads of stereotyping, with many other things currently slipping my mind. :p I can however promise you this: if you choose to play Harvester, love it or hate it, you'll never play another game like it and you'll never forget it!!

A memorable vacation for better or worse

Harvester... Controversial and memorable to a fault. It's hard to discuss the game without giving too much away, or even where to start but years after playing it, I still remember it. I remember the disturbing content, the gore, the frustration, the quotes, the ending... it's certainly something you'll remember. The setting is all kinds of messed up, like a deranged suburbia without completely throwing out the small-town setting, the normal outside to disguise the horror within. The atmosphere is there, and it's all done with that lovable FMV style. It doesn't look like dog biscuits, and the graphics outside of that is still pretty fine. It's pretty memorable all over. Gameplay on the other hand, is a mixed bag. It can be divided into two parts: Adventure and action. Adventure is classic point-and-click with some occasional obtuse puzzles. It's... good overall, certainly not gamebreaking but some of the puzzles can be a head-scratcher. But the combat is horrible. Melee collision is questionable, ranged weapons are god in either your hands but especially in the enemies, and if you run low on heal items, then good luck. BUT there are cheats, which I used, that grant you invulnerability or other perks. Just the invulnerability as I did not have patience for that combat, especially later on. The story is... memorable. I used that word a lot but the story blends with the atmosphere and setting. It can be divided into pre-lodge and Lodge. Pre-lodge is great, disturbing, and compelling with it's cast. The little stories in their own day and the lingering effects of your actions in the following days, the disturbing revelations and progression. The Lodge... that is something else. It's polarizing, but it was well worth experiencing despite the increased combat. Between 3/5 and 4/5, flawed but memorable. Worth checking out to see what the controversity is but go in blind. Although keep a guide handy, and a cheat or two just in case.

Enjoyable, shame about the ending

Harvester is an engaging 3rd person point and click style adventure game with a very dark and disturbing plot. It is definitely not one to play with your ten year old. In terms of graphics, audio and gameplay it is very typical of the mid 90s adventures that often combined hand drawn background with full motion video characters. (much like Return to Zork, Under a Killing moon...) Good points: Traditional point and click interface that is easy to use A decent set of actors. Very intriguing plot Non player characters that have some depth A set of of optional side scenes that are dark but enjoyably quirky. Scrap quirky, I mean totally mad. Points that appeal to some but not others: Minor elements of the plot change depending on your character's actions. There is a combat element to the game. You can attack almost anyone you meet but you are not obliged to until late in the game. Bad Points: Despite the interesting plot, both of the possible endings are disappointingly weak Combat suddenly becomes obligatory during the end game. You can choose to avoid it until then but when it kicks in it is actually quite difficult and annoying. To summarise, I enjoyed this game and thought it decent value for money. I'd recommend it to people who enjoyed 'Cat Lady' and/or the 'Black Mirror' series or any point and click adventure fans who also enjoy psychological horror fiction.
