Description

No one knew who built the ancient tower that loomed beside the coast. The young girl figured water must have once flowed down its giant aqueducts into her village, but even her grandfather couldn't remember seeing the mill's old water wheel turn. These days it is the job of her and the other children to journey to-and-from the tower to collect what little water bubbles up in the caves beneath it. But everything is about to change when she awakens a mysterious glowing orb buried beneath the puddles. Images long hidden on the cavern walls now glow with hints of a new hope for her drought-stricken village, and the sealed door of the tower sits ajar for the first time in centuries. With her curious companion in tow, the young girl bravely enters the crumbling ruins of the ancient machine to discover if its long-held secrets hold the key to her future.

Golem is a heart-warming adventure about a young girl and a shape-shifting golem who must navigate the ruins of an ancient tower to solve its challenging puzzles and re-activate its long-dormant machines.

Features:

  • Explore 10 expansive levels, from the caverns deep below the tower to the windswept turrets perched above the surrounding desert.
  • Using the different skills of the girl and the golem, solve the tower's puzzles to navigate the broken ruins and re-activate its long dormant machines.
  • Help the golem evolve through five unique forms that each bring new abilities to aid the two companions on their journey.
  • Decipher the tower's cryptic pictographs to find clues to its ancient builders and the origins of the mysterious golem.

Puzzles with a twist....

I just finished the game and while I was amazed with most levels especially the last ones I did not enjoy very much - mostly because of the mechanics and the bugs I experienced later (though saving and loading fixed these). You control a character and you try to reach the exit of each level. While doing so you will have to push some levers, turn some wheels and simply try to figure out what you'll have to do to reach the exit. Trying to figure out what the actual puzzle even is reminded me much of Myst. After finding out what to do the solution often is not that hard. The special twist here is that you have to use the abilities of your Golem companion and these do change every few levels so you'll need to adjust the way you are solving the puzzles the game throws at you every now and then. In most cases those Golem updates are really helpful and fun but there is especially one level (L8) were you'll have to walk a lot to find the correct way and while the path finding routines are not optimal also your Golem is not the fastest one. Keep in mind that there's a fast forward function (pressing space)! The implementation of the last ability of the Golem - move rocks - sounds fun but I found myself often fighting with the physics engine the game uses here to an extreme and don't even mention the automatic zoom while I try to zoom out and the game decides for me to zoom in after a while. The Story is not special at all so don't expect too much in this regard. Also there's no lore to find. This is first and foremost a puzzle game and you should not expect much more. The part "Decipher the tower's cryptic pictographs to find clues to its ancient builders and the origins of the mysterious golem." listed under features on the gamecard is simply misleading. If you are interested because of the puzzles or the artstyle however I can recommend this game despite the flaws in the mechanics in the last three levels. I enjoyed my 10 hours trip with the Golem.

Interesting puzzle experience

I was driven to buy Golem based on its art style, which I found (and, four levels in, still find) quite interesting. The level design is beautiful, and the golem character itself is quite interesting. Given the highly dynamic camera, you can zoom in on any area of the map and just enjoy the art at any time, or zoom out and try to take the whole thing in. Performance is good on my laptop, and the fast forward function helps with the backtracking when you miss a puzzle. Gameplay-wise, Golem is a bit of a let down. You click, and your character moves along a set route. I get that this is necessary when your golem actually starts moving on its own and you need to have two characters moving at the same time, but as a result I'm not really invested in the character as much as I was with (for example) Limbo. Which is a shame... there's an interesting story hinted here, but I just really can't push myself to care. I did have problems with installation; I tried to install this through GoG Galaxy, and it just didn't work. After almost a week, I decided to download the standalone installer and install the game like that. Only then did it work, and link to Galaxy. But by that point I wasn't as interested in playing this game as I had been, and I decided to play three other games first.

Beautiful

This puzzle game is challenging and fun, with colourful environments. Through only animation, music and gameplay you learn the story of this girl and her people. She finds a lone golem which helps throughout the game and goes through many shapes, each with it's own function. By the end I was engrossed in this and found the ending to be quit sad. There aren't many games games these days I care enough about to get emotionally invested; this was one of them.

Flawed gem with major butterfingers

The controls are stuck halfway between designed for a mouse as a point-and-click puzzle solver or for a game controller as a pseudo-platformer (which it really looks like it should be a platformer of some sort, visually); you'll spend the entire game either awkwardly moving a mouse cursor with a thumbstick or else awkwardly sliding various in-game lever actions with the mouse. Seriously, why couldn't they either map the sliders to override the mouse wheel, or perhaps wasd, while such an action bar is open, or else map movement to the thumbsticks and let you activate whatever you've walked to with a button (instead of having to always select the target from a distance)? Oh, and the fact that the walking is so slow that the devs felt the need to implement a fast forward control doesn't exactly help either. Finally, I just had the game crash because my PC is stupid and randomly disconnected from the internet while the game was launched. AFAICT there was no other potential trigger. I really want to love this game, I really do. Unfortunately, it's just frustrating as hell.

Cute & Cosy (+Alert: ignore OpenCritic reviews)

It's a nice, relaxing and enyoyable environmental puzzle game with a great soundtrack and minimalist story. Alert: ignore OpenCritic rating, it confounds this game with "The Golem" (a sokoban puzzle game) and "Golem" (a VR action game and originally relaesed for PS4). So a lot of really low ratings in that score that actually are meant for other games!!!
