Open World Tactics

Frozen Synapse 2 brings you classic tactical gameplay with a new twist: it's set within a vast procedurally generated city. We're calling it "open world tactics" - a combination of grand strategy and simultaneous-turn-based combat.

In single player, Frozen Synapse 2 tasks you with defending the city of Markov Geist against an array of threats from within and without. Set up bases, deploy your forces and then enter any building or engage a target anywhere on the map: you define your own strategy.

When you're ready to take tactical control, the camera will zoom down to your units, enabling you to make your plan and test it out. When you hit the "Prime" button, your moves are locked in and you must see how they play out against your opponent's plan.

The City

The city is a living system, with many AI-controlled factions vying for control and conducting their own nefarious business.

Choose to collaborate or betray, rob banks, assassinate political leaders or establish a delicate diplomatic accord: it’s up to you.

Investigate the mysterious force which is making incursions into the city while trying to establish your own power base in this complex and treacherous futuristic world. Follow the extensive story or abandon it to forge your own path: it's up to you.

You'll meet factions like the financial manipulators Diamond Brothers or the hacker collective GUEST as you navigate the political landscape.

Multiplayer

Frozen Synapse 2 features classic multiplayer modes from the original game as well as new ways to outwit your opponents, like the thrilling instant action of One Turn mode: commit your plan and see how it plays out against a range of oppositions from players all around the world.

New Features

Frozen Synapse 2 adds many new units like the Flamethrower, Minigun, Knife and Smoke Grenade.

Curved walls and new objects like trees, rocks and cars allow for much more realistic levels on a variety of scales, from a road intersection to an enormous shopping mall.

New Focus Diamond mechanic allows you to take out tricky enemies who insist on camping behind cover by predicting their location!

Vastly improved AI makes for tense tactical battles and a host of UI improvements mean that the planning process is slicker than ever before.

And of course, there's a brand new soundtrack from nervous_testpilot!

A very good iteration on the first one

Short version: Very nice update of the first game, with the same gameplay and feel with a better interface and q more dynamic solo campaign. The atmosphere of Markov Geist is the same for whose interested in it (like me) and the Music is just so good! Technical: Although people reports crash, as of now (September 18, 2018), I played without any. Tutorial may be a little funky on some resolution (I think) but once again, worked like a charm here (1920x1080). Gameplay: Good old Frozen Synapse! As a player of the first one, the interface is better, the graphics are better, the environment is better and you get more unit types. Interface is less clunky and thus a bit more accessible, they learned from Frozen Cortex it seems. FS1 player won’t be lost, it’s quite the same, and it just flows better: Orders are quicker to design and focusing your attacks is easier, levels are a bit more varied and force you to exploit all unit types. The solo campaign is dynamic and randomised, the story missions seem not (maybe a branching choice somewhere? I’m not very far in it). The multiplayer options are the same as the first one: turn based with a lot of customisation. A new mode (not tested) is available. Graphics and sound: Graphics follow the same style of FS1, keeping the very clean and Tron-like atmosphere. Some transitions and updates on the engine of course, but it just feel like home! Music is stupidly good like the first one, but I'm biased, I love nervous_testpilot style.

Not really bad, but kinda disappointing

I'll split this into reviews for the single- and multi-player due to how different they are. First the multiplayer: It's Frozen Synapse. Again. It's more polished with minor changes to the commands you can give and a new weapon type and some other fix-ups, but overall it's simply more FS. Which is good. And disappointing, kinda? I mean the game is good, great even, but it doesn't feel like something you'd be asked to buy again for the miniscule amount of changes. Then there's the singleplayer, the city mode. It's idea is big, it plays as a cross somewhere between X-COM Apocalypse and Frozen Synapse. The thing is, it also feels very confusing, underbaked and frankly underwhelming. It lacks the polish which made Apocalypse memorable. FS's combat mechanics cannot float something of this size either. The UI is underwhelming and hurtful more than helpful. Overall... it's rather disappointing. If this had been "the single player DLC", I would have said fine, optional expansion, there's people who enjoy this. It'd still be kinda meh, but alright. But the way it is, I can't truly recommend this game. Damn am I really giving FS2 a negative review? :(

Very worth it right now

All the bugs are fixed and the game plays great. Single-player is fun and multi-player is a blast !!! Very good sequel which brings new gameplay elements, new units and some random generation in missions. What more can you ask for?

Realistic Strategy!

I will focus on the singleplayer in this reveiw as that is what the big change is from its predecessor even though the multiplayer is very good (unfortunately only a handful of people are on at a time from my experience 19:00-21:00 GMT). Pros: + You can really imagine any scenario happening irl as everything is simultaneous unlike many other games of simlar genre. + Lots of unit variety spices up the matches. + City game adds another layer of stategy to the game and it is very fun to climb your way up the food chain so to speak. + Rewards good play as there is no rng, everything is deterministic. (Lots of mind games in multiplayer) + The game is clear on why you win/lose a fight (whether its cover, range, stillness, etc) + Soundtrack Cons: - Bugs. Not game breaking but there are quite a few from turns not lasting 5 seconds (no long turns) to unresponsive menus. - Poor AI at times. While the AI is usually not too bad, keeping you on your toes, there are times when it is straight up dumb (sending their leader into a place I am keeping on lockdown via gatling fire as an example) - Poor explanations at times (I am still confused about what each level of diplomacy does and why factions accept different agreements) Overall this is a great experience and anyone who likes strategy games like xcom but wants something that directly rewards skill will love this game. Quick note for if you buy this game: Get your key off the gog website (not galaxy) to enable multiplayer.

Not worth it right now

As of launch, too buggy to be worth it. I have tried playing the tutorial several times, and have either experienced crashes, or clicked a wrong button and was unable to correct my mistake, as the game thought I had selected the correct action and moved on to the next part of the tutorial.
