A hidden gold mine
Sierra pumped out so many great games in the 90s that many people were overwhelmed. Due to the sheer number of great titles they put out the focus tended to stay on their larger series and some of the smaller one-off titles did not get the attention they deserved. This is one of those titles. It truly is an adventure gaming classic. While it might lack some of the innovation seen in games like King's Quest and Police Quest it still packs a solid punch. The UI is solid and mimics other games from the era. If you've ever played an adventure game from the same time period you'll feel right at home when you start this one up. The buttons are familiar, the menus are easy to understand, and it all just works. The game play is also similar to the other titles of the time. There really was nothing new added here, they just took a solid engine that worked and developed a game for it. There's no spectacular no techniques used. What makes this game worth playing is the solid writing and humor throughout the game. The characters are interesting and bring a smile to my face. The familiarity of the engine allows you to instantly focus on the story and have a great laugh at the many goofs the game throws at you. It has the Leisure Suit Larry brand of humor, but with much more tame sensibilities. I actually find the humor to be superior in this game since it avoids many of the "cheap" jokes based on adult humor in Leisure Suit Larry. It isn't a particularly difficult game. If you're not interested in enjoying the humor of the story and are looking for something focused on game-play this probably isn't for you. While it's definitely not my favorite Sierra title it does rank pretty high on my list, especially for a game that flew much lower on the radar than their other titles. If you enjoy humorous storytelling and interesting problem solving then you should definitely check this one out if you haven't already.
