While everyone else was infatuated with making retro games based on the NES, this developer jumped up a generation. This is modeled after a classic SNES Platformer, and it shows; the aesthetic, music, and even design are dead on. Visually, it draws influence from titles of what I call medium obscurity, like those old Banpresto Platformers that never left Japan, but also later titles, like Aero the Acrobat 2. The music has vibes from all over the system; not the more obvious games, like your Marios or your Mega Mans. Clearly, this was made by someone who loves the SNES and really did their homework.
Great, so how is it? Well, it's solid; the level design presents a challenging and engaging obstacle course, and most of the stages are fairly long. There are no lives to speak of, so dying will take you all the way back to the beginning, but it does so instantaneously to keep you in the action. You can mitigate this by shelling out some of your hard-earned money to unlock checkpoints throughout each stage. Along the way, there are also treasures to be found that unlock your ability to earn upgrades or play bonus stages. Boss fights are clever and engaging, and even the few Scrolling Shooter sections are very reasonable. It's a solid, quality title that will keep you going for several hours; I absolutely got what I signed on for!
Fox N Forests may not have the most creative name for a game, but it's tied in with the stroyline and it's about a wise old tree/magic seeds you collect and a magical weather season's changing crossbow weapon.
From there we get a mix of a game I bought on Android that's called "Chronology" relating to the weather changing crossbow except Chronology used a timepiece instead of a crossbow and that forwarded/reversed and returned time back to normal to provide a route alternative to pass areas otherwise inaccessible.
That's basically the premise with this game but regarding the seasons, you change the sesonal weather to freeze waterfalls etc to progress through otherwise inaccessible landscapes, the weapon is otherwise just a single shot simple crossbow weapon at the starting level with a swipe action from I have played so far any way I've not gone to far into the game yet, but I will eventually.
The game plays in a 16bit retro pixel graphics art form with a nostalgic and catchy theme track that's 16bit chiptune style. It's got some minor retro-esque themes for the character conversation which to be honest can drag a little having to read that much text becomes somewhat tedious at times before moving into the game or when your chatting to a character you meet along the way etc.
Otherwise your getting a simple pick up and play platform game with a retro 16bit theme that is very well polished, maybe a a little lite on the action in parts where there seems to be a bit too much landscape and background artwork taking up that screen real estate versus enemies to combat, it would certainly benefit from a few extra enemies in places that seem a little hollow at times, but this can be forgiven.
The music is great pretty catchy in fact and the attention to artwork detail is above average, the game also has native gamepad support which is ideal if your looking for console type games for PC then this title is one to add to your collection for sure. But don't expect too much from Fox N Forests yes it is detailed to an extent yet still somewhat simplistic but it does make it comfortable for all to play and despite any flaws which aren't many then what is there to play is very well crafted and therfore it does hit above it's weight for what it aims to acheive.
A total scorefrom me of 4.0 out of 5.0
I really love the ideas the game went for. I really do. But sadly its execution left a lot to be desired.
The art style and music are great and just want I wanted from a game of this kind. I really like the character designs, I'm a sucker for any game with an animal cast. I really liked the idea of different seasons and how much they change the stages. The idea of replaying stages to get more items as you power up is neat in concept, however it leads into the flaws of the game.
I am not ashamed to admit that I used the cheat to unlock all stages late into the game. Why ? To unlock the next chapter you need seeds which are found in the stages. It doubles for each chapter, so it goes 6, 12 then 24. The stages are quite lengthy, checkpoints can be REALLY pricey, and these seeds are hidden in all sorts of ways. Anywhere from behind secret walls to changing seasons in a designated spot. I kind of had fun going through a stage for 20ish minutes and dealing with the challenges. But think of doing the exact same stage 3+ times so you can search every nook and cranny for the seeds. Each chapter only has 2 stages and a boss (Plus a bonus stage if you collect all the seeds) and you will be repeating those stages so many times you'll get absolutely sick of them. I could not fathom the idea of running the first stage of the game for the 3rd+ time, which led me to using a cheat to skip to the last chapter, which is where I was at anyway. It's too time consuming and obnoxious to be forced into a completionist mentality so you can progress in a game in which the goal is to reach the end of the stage. Especially since the stages aren't fun the 4th time around, and because of their length, you might spend almost an hour in a few due to searching everywhere for those seeds.
Although what really kills the enjoyment of the game are the controls. There's input delay, which for an action platformer it's essentially unplayable. Jumping, attacking, crouching, everything you do feels delayed. It had me thinking that maybe my keyboard had busted keys. It was that bad.
The attack in conjunction with the delay is the real fun killer of the game. Your primary weapon is a crossbow and your secondary is a blade. However, you can only using your crossbow while standing up. Crouching will stab forward, jumping will slash sideways, and double jumping will slash vertically. It really messes with your mind. You expect to perform a certain attack only to be in the wrong position. Or because of the input delay, you fail to attack an enemy because you couldn't use your jump attack in time, and you cannot shoot the enemy from far away due to angles. It would've been a much better game if you only had the arrows, especially since most enemies are either too short to hit with the arrow and require you to get very close, or at flying enemies which the arrow can't hit either. Most of the enemies you fight has to be either a jump attack or a crouch attack.
Plus, changing seasons is an absolute pain. You can only change when standing absolutely still, so enemies are free to approach while you are completely defenseless. But also, the animation is long, your mana is drained while your character performs the animation, and you can never activate while midair which can add to the delay. It just adds to the unresponsive feeling of the controls.
Not to mention its lack of rebinding. Its keyboard controls are atrocious and a simple rebind would've gone a long way. For half of the game it was an absolute struggle on top of everything because it just has such weird binds. It would not be a problem if you could rebind.
I was enjoying the bosses but the last boss went a little too far in the difficulty by being unpredictable in one phase and in the other giving you just enough time to hit ONCE before having to run to the corner to dodge an attack. It wasn't fun. Although I enjoyed the other bosses a lot.
In conclusion, it's a charming and nice game, but it really fails on properly executing. Is it worth a play ? If you're a fan of platformers and want something fresh, yes! I still recommend it.
Keyboard layout is a mess , and the half harted controller setup ( it is all guess work )
Very lazy devs , glad I waited until it was on sale.
