A Return to Classic Form

Flying Wild Hog has been building a reputation for themselves recently, with the modern Shadow Warrior titles, and now Evil West- that reputation includes some key characteristics: a bit corny, a bit janky, but a TON OF FUN. Evil West is not a triple-A budget title, but the design shows me a team that is made of people who are themselves avid gamers, and not just marketeers trying to make a clone of whatever is currently popular. The gameplay flow reminds me of some of my favorite action classics: God of War, the Batman Arkham series, Ratchet and Clank, and even the LEGO games, from time to time. The sequences are primarily scripted, but in the BEST way possible, not in a way that feels like youre in the passenger seat. The level spaces are designed with lively encounters, and secret collectibles. The protagonist has an extremely varied and creative arsenal of abliities, all packaged in beautifully rendered models, textures, and animations. Dont come into the game looking for something perfect or groundbreaking. The game has its little moments of loading hitches, or enemies getting smushed through a wall-- but nothing more than any classic game of the same style. But I'm not here for perfection, or badly optimized "photo-realism"... I'm here for FUN, and Evil West delivers on fun. It's been a while since I've seen a game that rings this true to the classic action game formula, and really delivers on it. I hope Flying Wild Hog continues their recent trend. Excellent work, folks!

There is no DRM

You can start the game without an internet connection. You don't need to be online to agree and continue. I started the game fine without the internet right after installing it. The game is excellent, and the setting reminds me of the old PS2 shooter Darkwatch. If you like Western themes with fictional setting, this is for you.

A PS2 game in all the good ways :)

As the title states, when starting the game I had this weird sense of being taken back in time to the PS2 era of gaming. The action is silly as well as the story and characters, going for that classic 90's edgy comic book design. Your character has guns, "magic" and several gadgets of destruction to take care of the local hellspawn infestation. The levels are linear but with lots of branches with hidden secrets to collect. The combat is classic TPP action with some modern elements sprinkled here and there. In short the game is very Arcady and like stated in the beginning feels like a game from the early 2000's that got a modern graphic treatment. If you want some fun action through a 8 to 12 hour story campaign (depends on if you want to 100% it) you will get it and more. :) Now, it's not all flowers and sunshine. The game has some technical issues and you might come across some bugs that will force you to reload a checkpoint. Not to mention you can tell when you reach a "Dev's where run out of money!" moments. Still, if you can get passed that you will get allot of fun

Traditional, For Better and Worse

Evil West is in some ways refreshingly unambitious. The plot is perfunctory, and all its non-combat gameplay segments and systems have been pared down to what could be their essential elements...if you asked a 7th gen developer with rigid ideas about what a game must contain to list them. The hybrid shooter/brawler gameplay provides the player with a reasonably sized arsenal and a variety of options which each fill their niche and synergize with one another to encourage modestly elaborate setups and combinations. Weapon upgrades/perks incentivize the player with conditional combat bonuses which offer some twist or benefit to keep them topped off on resources and increase lethality. For example, the melee gauntlet's more spectacular abilities are locked behind energy, and certain perk requirements (kill an electrified enemy, kill an enemy in air, finish an entire melee string) grant an energy bonus. In this fashion, the game sets microgoals for combat to keep the action flowing. Killing things as the developer intends, instead of how you want, can feel restrictive, but there are enough of these microgoals and enough convergence of the paths that lead to satisfying them that an enjoyable flow can be found in planning and adapting as encounters play out...when the fights allow it. The game's encounter design feels monumentally oppressive at times, and some enemies are so demanding of the player's attention that it feels like being forced to submit to the developer's preordained kill order in fights. I started having more fun once I simply accepted this and took encounters in stages instead of going for something more freeform. Everything not-combat is a resurrection of some of the most pointless relics of game design. Minor collectibles scattered in barely concealed dead ends, needlessly slow block pushing, braindead switch searching, etc. Physics engine issues lead to many frustrating moments as well. Outside fights my time often felt wasted. 3.5/5

Pretty Good Beat 'Em Up

If you played through God of War 2016, then you will have a better grasp on the mechanics for this game. You lack the instant help function of "BOY!", but have access to a wider variety of tools at all times. A fine game to grab on sell, as it is still a bit buggy. I hit two softlocks, both involving a chest and upgrading after I recieve the prompt I have enough money to buy an upgrade. I hit a hard crash during the bank fight. The game really does not like you restarting the check point before the fight. It starts chugging, then finally crashes. (I think because you have to shoot the sources each time to trigger the fight; the game fails to properly dispose of these assests when you restart.) I also clipped through the final boss, and had to fight my way out to reach the end trigger punch. Aside from that, it ran smooth. As for mechanics, I would suggest to not panic, and learn movesets, as well as timings. All Beat 'Em Ups are rhythm base, so each fight consists of properly timing the proper move at the right enemy at the right time. You do have two "get out of jail" cards to play; cross stun, and hyper mode. About only two enemy types make rolling away a main stay; suiciders, and the baloon throwers. Those suckers can be killed quick, but they tend to be the back lines to other medium size threats. The only really mandatory optional upgrade is the rifle one which allows you to shoot a weak point infinitely without reloading. I don't see how anyone could beat this game without it, as you have to shoot weakpoints all the time. If you have trouble with combat, then focus more on the electrical upgrades. The smashes, when combined, tend to wipe crowds of fodder, and hyper mode tends to rush down a single enemy. Explosives with the tornado just melts most front line enemies. Outside of that, your roll lacks IFs.
