A RPG with Amazing Crafting System

Evil Islands is one of the few games that I like playing again after a few years because of the freedom it gives me while creating my own play style. You play as Zak who wakes up in ruins and doesn’t remember who he is. With his metal (bronze) dagger and unusual clothes the people of the island declares him as the chosen one. So now it is your duty to protect them from dangers. However, not everything is as it seems. * Fully Voiced. * You can only access your inventory and character screen while you are on map view. * There is no leveling system. You gain health and stamina automatically as you gain experience. Then you distribute these experience points freely on abilities and skills in the map menu. * You can attack your enemy’s legs, arms, body or head. Hitting head is harder but does 3x damage. * Back-stabs have never been that powerful. Most monsters are more powerful than you, especially when they gang up on you in numbers so you watch, predict their movements. Combining backstab with headshot does 15x damage in the beginning. * Crafting system is easy yet powerful. It lets you create any armor, weapon or spell you want. Of course if you have the ingredients and skill. * Crafting weapons&armor is simple. You need to do is place the blueprint and then materials in the shop’s crafting section. It will give you the information of the final object. You can even add a spell into the object while creating it. For this, the spell must have an insert rune and both the energy and complexity must be lower than the final object. This way you can create weapons that weaken enemy or an armor that heals you repeatedly. * Crafting Spells You need keystones just like you needed blueprints for items. A single keystone is enough to create a spell, you wont need additional materials. But you can enhance the spell by adding runes to it. Also, you need to be able to cast the spell in order to craft it where highest numbers in your party is taken into consideration.

The weirdest greatness

This is a stealth/action/RPG with "russian" gameplay formula - lots of savescumming to get through difficult areas. Nevertheless, it's quite an original game with decent SP campaign and MP support. It has nice crafting system, weird but engaging magic system and weird AS HELL character development sysytem - read about it beforehand to avoid spoiling precious exp points. Also, note playing WITHOUT companions is EASIER, since you do not have to share experience with them, and companions leave you at the end of each act. It's also bloody hard and has a great emphasis on stealth.

Yes Yes, he says...

Played this for years. Seems like a quirky and silly game at first. The main character isn't a serious guy. But the maps are very challenging. Most enemies will crush you and there is no running away from combat, they will chase you down with their unlimited endurance while yours runs out quickly. Get used to saving. It plays like a stealth and strategy game. Sneak around, observe enemy movements, then pick off the isolated or weak. Running at them from behind and backstabbing is a staple gameplay for a while. Enemies do not re-spawn so you make progress by clearing areas (that you can) and powering up. The powering up in town is fun. There are many skills to specialize in and you only have enough points to go deep in a few of them. It's forgiving also, even if you make lousy choices its cheap to shore up weaknesses and still progress, even if you are pursuing a weird skill combination. The weapon/armor system also holds your attention. You collect blueprints and have the blacksmith fashion equipment out of materials dropped by enemies or salvaged from old equipment. Repair costs get out of control so you will find yourself keeping lower quality stuff, even in advanced areas, and trying different combinations that will still work without bankrupting yourself. The spell system is a similar feeling; you only have a few spells but you will constantly experiment to find out how much customization (runes) you can put in each spell to make it useful for your play style, or to be effective against a particular monster type. Hint: later shops do not carry lesser runes which cuts down possible combinations; but if you sell one to the shop and leave they will then have an unlimited supply. As someone else said, companions are a trap. They leech experience (skill points) and you don't get to keep them long. Overall, I enjoy playing it. Good challenging game but not too hard. Always decisions to make, colorful, fully voice acted, and lots of replay value.

World and Atmosphere is spot on

For those players that want a fresh take on RPGs this one is great the stealth elements feel fresh, bosses are interesting and gameplay is engaging. The progression and travelling from place to place, continent to continent feels so unique and perfect each with interesting characters and quests, also maps seem quite big currently and especially for the time, this was one of the games that I play that had day and night cycle and adds to the immersion. At some point you start to feel like you did such a big journey as you stop to look back at the places you have passed through. This game is really good and fresh to me so I give it 5 stars.

A Humble Gem

Evil Islands isn't flashy, but it was quietly one of the better RPGs of its time. Game play is fun and engaging and encourages creativity both in combat and with character development. A more interesting story than most, voiced notoriously poorly (at least in English version). As others have mentioned, do without party members since XP availability is finite and game play is simplified. I'd give it 4.5 stars since production values aren't good in a couple of places and the story could be a little longer. Really fun though, go play it.
