Epic hype

In the absense of an Epic manual or dedicated forum, I'm just going to post a couple of links here: Keyboard shortcuts: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/epic-1eg Walkthrough: https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Epic/Walkthrough As for my thoughts on the game, despite all the hype, Epic ended up being an all-too-brief arcade shooter rather the WingCo-killer many were expecting. Great cut scenes, a shamless but welcome nod to old school BSG and smooth, fast action, but it was just too simple with arbitrary constraints - such as fuel - feeling like a cheap way to hold things together. Strangely, the game holds up quite well in 2019 and is simple to play and easy to get through. Worth picking up if you're a curious and forgiving space gamer.

They say don't meet your heroes

I remember I used to love the game back in the Amiga days. But the game didn't age all that well. I'm not sure if it's the PC version or the game itself but I don't find the experience that enjoyable anymore. The game speed is strange. It's got that annoying balance between "my computer is too slow" and "everything just flashes before my eyes". The missions are confusing (and I completed whole game back in the 90's when noone in Poland heard about copyrights so I had no manual or anything and had to figure out everything by myself). And the sound in dosbox (not sure whether original PC version had same issue) is a bit clicky. Might be worth checking out if bought on deep sale and if you were a great fan of the original. Otherwise... not really.

Battlestar Galactica 16-bit style

This is about Epic. I still remember the awe I felt the first time I ran the game on my Atari ST when the game was released. The intro and gameplay graphics were like nothing seen before, at least 3D style, at least outside Digital Image Design's previous games. I don't know if they used the same engine or not, but the style was definitely very similar and very impressive. It's a game very similar in gameplay to the first two Wing Commander games and with a story taken out of the original Galactica. At the time this game was the closest to a game version of the original (and only by that time) TV series. Missions are of what you would expect from the genre. Graphics were fantastic for the time and so was sound. The control of the craft was good and overall it was a fun game. The intro was great and I recommend letting it play at least once, though as I mentioned that was for the Atari ST version, I haven't played yet the PC version. But I will as I plan on buying it tonight. Good game.

I had the original release

I remember this game vividly, it's what got me into Shmups. The different levels included shoot em ups in space fighting lots of enemy fighters and destroying capital ships while trying to protect your own ships, other levels included strafing ground targets. Bear in mind these are early 90's graphics at the time I thought they were amazing and spent many hours playing this game. I was lucky enough to get an abandonware version of this game before GOG hoovered up the licence, but will probably buy this version eventually as I have to run DOSBox seperately to get the game to work. Considering the game cost me £25 back in the day (equivalent to around £70 now, the price isn't too bad. I still haven't got the excitement from any space shooter that I got from this game.

Excellent bit of nostalgia!

I am a huge Wing Commander fan, and this felt like a great nod to the series. And that intro! Truly epic for it's time. And still great. Never got to try the sequel, which I am THRILLED to try!
