Adventure does not end here!
Check the entire Earthworm Jim Collection!

Jim wasn't always a studly super-worm. He was once just a spineless, dirt-eater with no real mission in his life...

But then something unexpected happened. The evil Psy-Crow was transporting a super suit, built by the genius Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, to Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, Slug-For-A-Butt, but along the way it was stolen by a rebel. Although Psy-Crow killed the rebel, the suit fell down to Earth, landing on an Earth Worm. That cosmic twist of fate placed Jim in control of an ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit.

Anyway, Earthworm Jim found out that Princess What's-Her-Name had been captured and set out to save her. Meanwhile, there's a bounty on Jimmy and plenty of people are in line to take Queen Slug-For-A-Butt up on her offer.

Now Jim must make it to the princess and stay clear of Psy-Crow, the intergalactic bounty hunter, until the final battle with Queen Slug-For-A-Butt. To accomplish this, you'll have to use every weapon and ability at your disposal to wriggle your way through dozens of original and just plain weird levels.

  • Diverse levels and gameplay modes that provide an unmatched platforming experience
  • Great music and amusing sound effects
  • Loads of good humor and fun, often bordering on the disturbing

Earthworm Jim is not for everyone.

I consider it one of those games that is completely misunderstood by newer generations, as well as underappreciated by some of us, the Gen X kids and some millennials. The humor is absurd or "wacky." It's the centerpiece of the video game, as it uses parody as a resource. In an era, the awful '90s, where everything was electro dance, rock was dead, and television was bread and circuses for many, as well as a promised land, almost forbidden still for us, the "forgotten kids." The absurd humor is reflected in the gameplay itself, which, undoubtedly, you had to be part of that era to understand its context. On that, I do agree: it’s a game of its time, with many allusions to other cartoons, etc., etc. For me, it’s an epic piece. Regardless of the version, this kind of action-platformer is something that, nowadays, is only recreated with tried-and-true formulas. There are no more risks of more space worms because, well... the audience is tough. The gameplay, the difficulty, and the atmosphere are fantastic. A pure and hard game, not suitable for those who don’t understand crazy patterns or bizarre bosses. The controls were of their time, as was the character design itself. Groovy, twisted, hard as hell, and very surrealist. A must-have for any GOG collector. For those with dry bones :)

Early 90's Platforming At Its Strangest

Note I said 'strangest' -- 'Grossest' would go to Boogerman...Though this game does deal with a snot-boss, too. Earthwom Jim isn't afraid to be weird - One moment you're jumping around in a junk-yard fighting a trash-can monster, next you're dodging flames and attacks from an overzealous cat, and after that you're protecting a bipolar puppy! Profoundly-silly! Controls hold up. They're still responsive and solid, the arc of Jim's jump flows well, and the level-design never feels overwelming, even as they get expansive (Well, the final level's helicopter-descent does rely on trial-and-error memorization. Be aware of that.) Music is appropriate in many cases too, like how the 'What The Heck' level transitions from 'Night on Bald Mounain' to elevator muzak, replete with the screams of the tortured. Do note, however, that this is NOT the 'Special Edition' - It does not have the redbook Tallarico soundtrack, expanded/extra levels, or updated ending sequences. If you're looking for a relatively straightforward action/platformer -- And Ren & Stimpy's your thing -- You really can't go wrong with an annelid in a super-suit!

Seriously addictive

Commander Keen and Monty Python had a beautiful baby. There are so many fun ideas here, sometimes you can barely go a few seconds between two instances of Tex Avery cartoonish sight gag or a truly ridiculous scenario. Literally, there’s one level that has an escort mission where if you fail to protect the puppy, it hulks out and attacks you. There are satirical jokes about the tropes of this kind of story where a hero is fighting to rescue a princess. The gameplay is incredibly fun as you run, swing float and shoot your way through. There are definitely places where it gets frustrating and feels unfair; this is from back when video games were made to be so difficult to complete that it would take you the entire weekend and they could make more money from the rental. The video games could not be anywhere near as long as games today in how much actual content there is. I'm personally extremely happy that I've never had to try to complete this without the ability to save at the end of each level. The final level is made to be just about impossible to get through the very first time you reach it, and thankfully now that we can save at the end of each level, it is merely a compelling challenge and not obnoxious. With that said, I can absolutely see a lot of people who otherwise love platformers finding this to push that kind of thing too far. So that's definitely something to take into account before buying it. This is the kind of game that you don't just play because you feel like playing a video game, but because you want to see what it's going to throw at you next. Essentially the only thing that in no way changes is the overall sub genre. One level of this has you making your way through a junkyard, another has you going through the sci-fi lab of a mad doctor where you'll be attacked by brains moving on their own. You visit Heck, which is all fire, brimstone, demons, and, yes, lawyers. It features a non-zero amount of snowmen. The devil is a cat with nine lives.
