Bring your dragonlance...

DragonStrike is a simulation game where you ride metallic dragons and fight against the evil dragonarmy of Takhisis. It takes place in the Dragonlance setting, world of Krynn which is an old epic fantasy setting. We are such a hero, who is a Dragonrider in the ranks of Knights of Solamnia, a knightly order defending Krynn from all kinds of evil forces. The story is parallel to the latter half of the War of the Lance and it is okay. We start small (well relatively, as Dragonriders are in fact pretty high in order compared to other knights already) and ascend the ranks of the order by doing missions. We can get new dragon mounts and items as we progress through the ranks of the order (or change into other Solamnic Orders). Much of the story is told in-between missions with a text and some still images but that's all. Gameplay is like a basic flight simulator game from the era of Wing Commander, with breath weapons (similar to missiles in space simulators), dragon natural weapons (claws, bites) and lance jousting. You position your lance and try to connect the tip with the enemy. Breath wepons has a recharge timer so you have to use them strategically. The game is in the harder part of the scale for flight simulators as you and your dragon have separate HP's and if you are not careful, you can end up dying from a single breath wepon to the rider. It is always better to approach enemy dragons from above as they can claw or bite the rider or place a dragon breath right in front of you. You can even fall from your dragon and it makes a check to catch you! Your most common enemies are evil dragons and other flying creatures in addition to more mundane ones like ships. Gameplay and the controls are dated but overall, this is an unique and decent game which lets you be a Solamnic Knight and a Dragonrider. 4 stars if you are a fan of Dragonlance and Knights of Solamnia, deduct one if none of them rings a bell.

Great Old Classic

Dragon Strike is one of the best flight simulators in it's unique niche. A wonderful art, a variety of enemies, great flight system for that time (and still good in nowadays), naive, but acceptable for that time 3D graphics and inspiring gameplay. For me playing Dragon Strike when I was young was an immersive dive in the sky battles against tricky chromatic dragons with the light taste of Krynn universe. From that time i'm still waiting for someone to create dragon flight simulator as great as was Dragon Strike — the first, the brave and the inimitable!

Careful - a nostalgia trap!

The stars that this game gets from me are for the charming artwork and the concept. And maybe for the fact that this game allows you to bind your keys, when nobody else thought to do that in its time, yet. However, everything else - controls, mission design - is utterly terrible. The difficulty curve is all over the place, up unto the point where the game pits you against multiple enemy dragons at once, all attacking you at once - an unwinnable scenario, as it's impossible to evade multiple dragons circling you and breathing at you consecutively. For that you'd need some situational awareness, and this game won't grant you any. Some examples: The mission you get for joining the Order Of The Rose pits you against several enemy dragons strewn all over the map, two of them approach you right away from two opposite directions, before several more join in - unwinnable (except with a whole lot of pure luck). Another example is the mission you get while in the Order Of The Sword, where your rider decides to go after several blue dragons alone - unwinnable, because multiple dragon's breath attacks are simply not evadable for long without a whole lot of luck. Skill plays no part in this game. Controls are slow and clunky, to the point where keyboard controls are the most precise ones. Mouse is second, joystick is absolutely useless. The low resolution isn't an excuse for that, either. I've played flying sims of that age before, and all of them are perfectly playable with a joystick to this day. I'd never think of playing any of the Wing Commanders, the old X-Wing etc. with a keyboard. Here, there's hardly another choice, if you want to be able to actually target something. Oh yeah, before I forget: You have only few healing salves for you and your dragon, and entering another order forces you to give them away, unless you want to lose whatever protective gear you've earned up unto that point. What bull... This game spits in the player's face on top of everything else!

Fun Game

I have absolutly no Nostalgia for this Game, but from those Silver Box Games i have played so far, it is the most fun of them. You are riding a Dragon and completing Objectives, typical Dog Fighting Stuff, the Controls that works best is with the Keyboard. I think it could work pretty good to remap those with the Help of Dosbox to a Controller. This Game would benefit from a Source Port that allows to enhance the Window with the actual Graphics, thats why i take away one Star. Midgame you get the Chance to change your Order, this also enhances the Difficulty.
