Join up with a friend to play online in co-op and make your own adventures with the powerful RPG toolkit.

In Divinity:Original Sin you take on the role of a young Source Hunter: your job is to rid the world of those who use the foulest of magics. When you embark on what should have been a routine murder investigation, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a plot that will rattle the very fabric of time.

Divinity: Original Sin is a game that gives you a lot of freedom and plenty of gameplay mechanics to use or abuse. The game's epic story may drive you toward your ultimate end-goal, but how you get there is entirely up to you.

Or up to you and a friend, because Divinity: Original Sin can be played completely cooperatively, and features both online and local drop-in/drop-out multiplayer. Great adventures become even greater when shared with a trusted comrade-in-arms!
  • Become part of a reactive, living and vast open world. Explore many different environments, fight all kinds of fantastical creatures and discover tons of desirable items.
  • Experience gripping party- and turn-based combat. Manipulate the environment and use skill & spell combos to overcome your many foes: Use magic to make it rain on your enemies, then cast a lightning spell to fry them to a crisp.
  • Experiment with different skill combinations to ruin the day for enemies and townspeople alike.
  • Play with a friend in co-op multiplayer. Make decisions together (or disagree entirely), as your interactions and relationship with your partner influence the game.
  • Unravel a deep and epic story, set in the early days of the Divinity universe. No prior experience with other Divinity games is necessary, however. The game takes place well before its predecessors, Divine Divinity and Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga, but will still feel familiar to fans.
  • Classless character creation lets you design the character of your choice. Endless item interaction and combinations take exploration and experimentation to another level of freedom.

Years after release, they added DRM...

As the title says, years later, they added a custom launcher that gates from launching the game and requires an external account to launch with no obvious way to skip this step. The launcher is pointless, especially when the game is on a DRM free platform. Thankfully GoG Galaxy 2.0 allows you to roll back a patch, so for now, I will remain on the last actually DRM Free patch. This was done for all three of their largest games, DoS I, DoS II and BG3. I am extremely dissatisfied with this change as it offers nothing to and breaks a promise made to the customer, as much as I love their games and appreciate them as a studio, I cannot support Larian on this.

The glory days of adventuring are back

Back are the days of great games like Baldurs Gate and Planescape Torment. True this game doesn't compare to them just like PST doesn't compare to BG. This game stands on its own feet and sets a new standard other adventure RPG's will be measured against. Note that you can play the game in different ways. I chose to play it as 'Classical' so this review is for that style. The game has gorgeous graphics just slightly going to the side of cartoonish (i.e. specularity isn't used too much and colors are bright). This allows for some (Larian) humor in the game which otherwise would feel out of place (like for instance the sheep animation :-) ). Important in games are the number of things you can do so the world feels real and in DOS there is plenty to do. * Detective work * Crafting ** You try to combine items you think make sense ** Apply recipes you find during your travels * Fighting * Level up with a lot of choice how you would like to do that * Lots of things to discover so keep your eyes peeled This game did the impossible for an adventure with lots of text (think NWN, PST, BG amounts of text) and that is to have everything and I mean everything voice acted. There are lots and lots of items in game everything with its own great looking icon. The TBS fights are not too tough and not too easy. Equipment needs to be maintained but in a way that makes it easy. You can just right click repair and the character that is best at repairing will do it for you. This saves you from the tedious dragging around equipment. Lots of interesting characters to meet, great looking places to visit and previous treasure to be discoverd.. All in all this one of the finest Adventure RPG's I have ever played. 6 out of 5 stars from me.

A flawed but highly enjoyable adventure

Main concern: Story. It is generic and still confusing. I like games with lots of conversation, this one suits that criteria, but it is often way too much. Ex.1 At one point halfway into the game you can ask a character "What did you see at the night of the murder?" and it takes them 3 text screens and 5 sentences to say "Here's a cutscene." Ex.2 Early in the game you are introduced to a large central story line and the character that explains this uses the better part of a novel, around 15 full text screens, to say what amounts to "That's the bad guy, you might want to stop him." This game is in DIRE need of an editor to cut the fat. When you go in: go in in the full knowledge you will have to learn speed-reading pretty fast. But aside from some minor bugs, that's about where the negatives ends. Almost all dialogue is beautifully voice-acted by a handful of VAs, even lowly NPCs (and animals) have full narration and flavour text and a lot of good comedy. This can not be understated in its enormity. The combat is amazing, where old RPG classics such as its predecessor of Divinity Divinity or Baldur's gate can get clustered and spammy in combat; D:OS goes for turn based RPG combat and it works brilliantly. The world of a classic RPG with the combat of XCOM. Time to think your decisions through and know how they will affect the following turns is great, and helps when the greatest gimmick of the combat is "Environmental Hazards", fire spells and abilities light people and the ground on fire, and smoke obscures vision, and you can manipulate the battlefield as such with each of the main elements. It's a blast in COOP, though if you're a savvy minmaxer it wont offer much teeth past the first act. For a game advertised as emulating freeform tabletop it does a good job with interactable environments with multiple ways to solve your problems. A generic and slovenly story made up for with great gameplay. Rough around the edges but great fun: an amazing coop game.

RPG as it should be done

Lots of RPGs are just a story and you play the story. Freedom is strictly limited. What this game does absolutely right is how it opens its world and quest system to do almost anything you want to do and uses the ingame magic system to interact with the world. Fireball in most games will just deal damage, here it burns stuff down, it will melt ice, it will actually do what a fireball should do. Moving objects feels smooth, little riddles are satisfying to solve and the world opens itself to many great quest lines. Objects have weight, objects behave to the elements and you can use them to trigger switches, traps, thats how it should always work. The main story isnt bad, but its quests are just losely connected, as you collect blood stones all over the place. Some smaller quest lines have quite some charm, if the player chooses to read the text and not just spam to the reward. The game delivers a lot that you will miss badly in other RPGs after. The ability to disconnect your group and move them independly, even in different areas, one is in combat, the other runs around doing quests, while one is in a dialoge to steal with the other is marvelous, it feels right to do it that way and its a great implementation on the UI, very nicely done. Turn-based combat is nice, but it can drag on for a long long time in some fights, maybe enemies should move all at once to speed up the process if they are so many of them acting (with like 10+ enemies involved it takes a lot of time for them to just attack you all over). The "repair" system is more annoying than good, should be removed as it doesnt really have a purpose other than annoy you when stuff breaks in combat (you just have to repair stuff all the time, which is tedious clicking and nothing else). If you want to actually "role play" a bit and do so with a friend, this game opens up a lot of possibilities, really awesome experience. Fantastic game for all RPG lovers.
