The year is 1988. Adventure game developer Delores Edmund, on hiatus from her job at MMucasFlem Games, has returned to Thimbleweed Park for a quick vacation. While she’s home, she’s making some extra money as a photographer for the Thimbleweed Nickel News. Hey, game developers need to eat, too!

Thimbleweed Park hasn’t changed at all in the year since Delores has been away… or has it?

…Since when is the S&D Diner a five-star establishment?
…When did the PillowBear™ become all the rage?
…Why is Ransome the Clown suddenly winning humanitarian awards?
…How come no one seems to remember that dead body that turned up under the bridge a year ago?
…Can Thimbleweed Park get any stranger?!.

In a town like Thimbleweed Park, a side career in photojournalism is the least of your problems...

Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure started out as a prototype for Ron Gilbert’s new point-and-click adventure game engine and grew into a fun little game. It is not a sequel to Thimbleweed Park and is probably missing all of the small bells and whistles that would make it a commercially viable game.

This was a challenging game to make because we had to use almost exclusively “found art” from Thimbleweed Park to create all new puzzles. Also because we couldn’t go outside IRL.

As a thank you to our fans, we are releasing it for free as something you can have fun with in these odd times. You don’t have to have played Thimbleweed Park to enjoy this mini-adventure. (But if you do enjoy it, why not check out Thimbleweed Park, hmm?)

Great for what it is

Obviously this is not a full game, it's a prototype. With that in mind, it was fun trip back to the world of Thimbleweed Park, and the increasingly difficult tasks were quite a lot of fun to solve. After the first playthrough I thought the following ones would be quick, since I now knew where all the items were located. But far from that! The second one was indeed relatively simple, but starting from the third play-through, the puzzles got a fair bit more complex.

Nice cute short tale

If you've played Thimbleweed Park, you'll feel right at home here. This spin-off game is made literally from the same assets, as it's something the authors had to cook up while being unable to go out during the pandemic. For that alone, you really cannot fault it for reusing assets or being short, particularly since it's free. You play as Delores, from the aforementioned game, and you got a new job as a photojournalist. You're given a list of 5 objectives to find and take pictures of. Sounds simple enough, and it is at first, but things get a bit deeper. See, there's no saving in this game. Once you finish your 5 objectives you exit the game and when you come back you get 5 different ones. The thing is, these objectives get a bit harder. The first few ones are as simple as exploring a bit until you find something obvious, but later ones might require some puzzle solving or doing certain actions to unlock them and sometimes even if the solution is obvious, arriving to it isn't. The one negative I can give about this game is that there's no story to speak of, which is kind of odd for an adventure game. Literally the only thing that advances the story from the introduction is completing all objectives, which are entirely unrelated to each other. Then again, it's all unimportant. The entire point of this game is just to give us something small to play with for free in these days where going out isn't much of a possibility, and it's fun enough yet short enough that the lack of variety in gameplay doesn't overstay its welcome.

Worthwhile mini-adventure

This is a fun, short revisit to Thimbleweed Park! (If you haven't played Thimbleweed and you're a fan of classic point & click puzzle/adventure games, go get it!) This mini-game has a simple concept with increasingly difficult puzzles and familiar characters. Once you finish, stay for the credits--they're hilarious and entertaining!

Mini Sequel

Although this is available for free, you won't get much out of it unless you have played Thimbleweed Park. In addition to taking place after Thimbleweed Park, it makes reference to the events including at least one major spoiler. Although there is no saving during the game, it does save after you take all five photos, turn them in then ask about quitting the game. When you reload the game, it remembers which assignments you have been given and gives you five new ones. There are a total of thirty assignments and once they are all completed, you get an actual ending sequence. This ending will also only make sense if you have actually played Thimbleweed Park.

Do you like classic Point and Clicks?

A truly great imagining of classic Lucas Arts and Sierra Point and Click Adventure games! Such a great story and well written characters. It has a few obtuse puzzles but for the most part is pretty straight forward and logical. Highly recommended and it may make you love clowns again!
