My current favorite roguelike

I own this on Steam. I've been playing it for quite a while so I've seen much of this game's evolution. Couple things of note... the game is extremely polished, there's a complete game here that is very fun to play and worth the cost of admission. The devs have been very good at maintaing stability between releases... they've had some issues with Mac builds, but take those issues very seriously and get them resolved quickly. There are no missing game play mechanics that make this game frustrating to play. Despite the fact that this game is very complete and feature rich, the devs keep improving it and tweaking the balancing. They have a youtube channel were they give frequent updates so there is a lot of visibility into what they are doing- it's early access done right. I would recommend watching some youtube game play videos to ramp up... gameplay is similar to FTL, but definitely tailored very well to this game's setting. Visually, I think the game is stunning, but you may not appreciate the pixel art (some of which is still placeholder).

Innovative Mechanics, Great Storytelling

I have been playing this game for months now, and every update brings new features. I would really recommend it to any roguelike fun. I think it has the same level of charm games like FTL have, only this time in a totally different setting (victorian style exploration) and with very innovative mechanics. I tend to see FTL on the high level as a "story builder", and that is the key part it shares with Curious Expedition. The feature that tells the story of your expedition when you finally die is great. I think the game will really shine when they add an overall mechanic for competing against the other explorers. I think it is much better to pay for the alpha and then get involved in the development via feedback and bug reports, instead of supporting a kickstarter that you never know wether it will be good or not.

Good game with solid ideas

I bought this sometime ago and have enjoyed it throughout its development. It is an easy to learn rogue-like of explorers taking on a randomly generated land looking for a hidden or not-so-hiden golden pyramid. There are several explorers to choose from (3 initially but more get unlocked as you progress through the game). Now that the final version is out, I can definitely say I enjoyed this, still enjoying it and will be playing it in the future. Expect short gameplay sessions (up to an hour maybe) to be had here per character/game. It is fun and love crafted and I think it is worth the money.

More Frustrating Than Fun

Don't get me wrong, this is not a "bad" game. It's very pretty, and it seems designed to appeal to a very particular audience. My problem after playing for several hours is how bleak the randomness makes the game. It doesn't feel "curious" and I don't feel like an "explorer." The game is clearly designed to get you back into the action ASAP after you die. When I hit the 'New Game' button again and again, it wasn't because I was having fun, I really wanted to figure out what I was doing "wrong." But you don't have to do anything wrong to fail. And for me, that made this game frustrating, and boring. Too much random, too little strategy. You don't have enough time to recognize your mistakes to correct them. You just have to hope for some better rolls in the next game. Also, I got tired of my dudes eating each other. Cannibalism is funny. But not funny enough to see over and over and over. . .

Difficult, but fun!

This game is a very addictive adventure/strategy/rogue-like game. Each time you play is different, and the variety of things that can happen to your characters is staggering. The different starting characters force you to adapt your strategies according to their resources/abilities. Each mission on your multi-exploration journey makes you stronger, but once you die or end your journey the next one starts you back at square one in traditional rogue-like fashion. However, you potentially can unlock many different characters, so completing certain tasks and having the opportunity to try again with a different character is very fun. The art style is wonderful, and the music fits the game very well. The sound effects are perfect and atmospheric. The ONLY reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is because even on the easy difficulty this game is hard to beat. There is obvious strategy involved, however, your luck can be against you at any turn to wipe you out, drive your explorers crazy and have them turn on each other, get trapped under a log that you can't lift... and some of it is literally left to a dice roll as to how it ends. The odds are not in your favor. However, I don't want to paint this as dismal. It makes you appreciate the actual exploration that has taken place in the past, as all these circumstances are legitimate problems that explorers must have faced. It definitely makes you that much happier to finish a journey alive, even more so if you finish in one of the higher ranks. It just isn't the type of game you can relax and play, as that random death occurrence may be just around the corner. If you can get it on sale, do it. It's fun, challenging, and worth the investment. Just don't expect to live through your first expedition, or your second, or your third...
