Cultures 1
Before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, the Vikings set out on their own journey of discovery and possible looting and pillaging. Having accidentally stumbled upon the Americas, they began their remarkable adventure in a new and unfamiliar land. Welcome to Cultures, where you can actively shape the destiny of your people as they struggle to gain a foothold on unfamiliar shores. Success hinges on your ability to balance achieving your goals with the needs and desires of your clan. It is up to you to nurture and guide your people: determine their names, occupations, marital partners, and, eventually, the gender of their children. The happiness of your settlers is paramount to achieving your goals in this exploration and construction-focused RTS.

Cultures 2: Gates of Asgard
The Viking Bjarni whiles his days days away in an idyllic village on Greenland’s coast until a dark prophecy knocks on his door. In his premonition, Bjarni witnesses an epic struggle between the forces of Good and Evil. He must journey to battle the Midgard Serpent. Get ready for a quest that will take you through Europe (including England and Byzantium) and the outskirts of Baghdad. Your journey will unite the four great western cultures with a common purpose. But how long can it last? Inspired by Norse mythology, the real time strategy title, Cultures 2: Gates of Asgard, combines elements of simulation, adventure, and role-playing to immerse you in Bjarni’s quest to defeat the fabled beast.
  • Includes Cultures and its sequel, Cultures 2: Gates of Asgard.
  • Over 200 hours of absorbing god-sim gameplay with extremely detailed characters, stunning environments, and vast landscapes.
  • A unique overarching story with strong adventure elements shines through in both games.
  • Features more than 30 different trades and professions all with their own in-depth job and skills systems.

The Settlers expanded

I noticed Cultures because it was made by the same guys who made The Settlers 2. Since that is one of my favorite games of all time, I got an eye on Cultures. But it is so much more than that. Image The Settlers with settlements on a smaler scale, but the people acutally matter. They don't come endlessly from some storage house, but have houses, jobs and even relationships. They need food, which is the most imporant thing to produce and secure a stable production. If you want to get the best out of your people, make them happy: provied them with food, houeses company and faith, if the need to. Military is somewhat lacking and not one of the cores of the game, but still necessary. The game focuses a lot on build the settlement and managing your people. Cultures 2 expans the system further, with upgradeable houses and more complex techtrees. Additionally, it has a much expanded single player campaign with better story and missions. I would recommend both games highly to anybody who has a thing for building games. They are not just different from most other games in the genre, but also at the top of it.

Think of the Sims with no will to live.

This game has a ton of micromanagement. If you like playing Office Unit Supervisor: Viking Edition, by all means play these games. You have to look after every individual, and assign them task such as carrying ,baking, milling, mining, fighting, whatever. I was about to give it three stars, but that isn't really fair to it, considering that the mechanics actually work, but are really dependent on the skill of the player to a very high degree. It is pretty unforgiving. The game depends on realistic population dynamics, so you have to watch your people and how you commit them. It doesn't matter if you have a ton of spears if there is no one to hold them.

Cultures - Like AoE on ultra ultra slow

I played Cultures on my PC back in 2001 when it came out. It was sold as a Settlers type game, but I found it to be much much more. The micro management is immense, as these vikings do not have a desire to live. It can be summed up like this: A joiner goes into his hut. There is no leather to join, in his house. He gets hungry and goes to the storage room to eat food. He goes back to his hut. He then goes to the hunters hut to get leather. He comes back with 1 leather and makes one shoe. He gets tired and goes to sleep. Rince repeat. If you love micro management and slow city development this game is for you. If you like fast paced, or even slow paced city development, this game is not for you. I remember I calculated roughly 20 food with a steady food gathering/consumption rate, per baby produced, and then about 5 minutes until you got an adult viking. A niche game. I did enjoy it back in its time, though the original disc was flawed, with instruction manual in German, and never ending scenarios, that will end when your tribe runs out of food. Recommended for the hard core micro manager.

Enjoyable long games

Really fun colourful games with a lot of charm. Will take a long time to complete (Iv played it since I was a kid and still have never completed the first game) and is very difficult to master. My one complain is the original cultures doesn't include the expansion Cultures: The Revenge of the Rain God, I believe this is because it doesn't have an English language version (if GOG can add this in some way id be eternally grateful) Other than that this is a grate package and I fully recommend it

Good old classic

Cultures are slow town-building games with a lot of micromanagement. As is typical of German games, building your town is the main focus and although there is soldiers and combat, it is an insignificant component that is greatly simplified. You do need exuberant amounts of patience to play these as they're even slower than the Settlers games, but they're still more worth your time than anything you can find for your mobile. The GOG version, although the DRM has been removed, has several technical problems that makes it rather frustrating to attempt to play it: - The default volume level is excruciatingly loud and the music volume slider doesn't work - it's way too loud no matter what (even the mute option doesn't work). - Although you can increase the resolution to modern levels (though you're still limited to 8 and 16 bit colours), the setting isn't saved and the game returns to 1024x768 whenever you exit it. - The shortcut keys are wrong - several of them don't correspond with the manual and are set to non-alphanumeric keys, which makes it guesswork to figure out what keys they actually are on, and since they can't be reconfigured makes them unusable for anyone with a Nordic keyboard or any other keyboard layout that uses 3-5 characters per key (because the game uses character input instead of key scan, and doesn't respond to Shift/Alt/Ctrl etc key-combinations). In other words: You cannot use things like the speed control key which makes the game basically unplayable - it's way too slow on normal speed.
