Description
The year is 1910. Bathed in pale Spring sunlight, the small fishing port of Illsmouth is a sleepy New England town where time seems to stand still. Appearances can be very deceiving, however .... Beneath the peaceful tranquility of this small village, a horrifying truth lingers.

Whispers in a dusty, secluded library ripple with fear as questions of the past are brought into the present. Is there a link between the return of Halley's comet and the resurgence of the Great Ancients who once dominated the land in a reign of terror? Legend tells tales of an ancient ritual ground, hidden deep in the shadows of the tangled forest, marked by an ornate and mysterious cross. Once, long ago, this site was the stage for wild and terrifying rites that no one dare speak of, lest they suffer the wrath of the Ancients.

Why are the townspeople of Illsmouth struck by such shattering terror? Why are they drawn to the ancient ritual grounds after so many years? What has released this curse from its deep sleep to play havoc upon the souls of innocent people?

You'll take on the role of John T. Carter, a brilliant young astronomer, piecing together the puzzling history of the village and its cryptic inhabitants. Incredibly realistic action and supernatural chaos intertwine to draw players deep into the puzzling mysteries within the Shadow of the Comet.
  • Includes the CD-ROM and floppy versions of Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet.

A complete letdown

I played this game lured by the reviews that said that the interface was a bit rough but that the story and atmosphere would more than make up for it. Having worked through this mess of a game, I have to say that for me they do not. The story is mediocre and does not make any kind of sense without having read Lovecraft's books. And if you've read the books, there is little reason to play this game as it does not live up to the standard of Lovecraft's works. Atmosphere is often broken by bad graphics (probably budget-motivated) such as all night backgrounds that look mostly identical in brightness to the day backgrounds with just the sky cut out and replaced with a dark one. You can even see the jerky corners left behind around anti-aliased edges by bad cut jobs in some images. Other problems of the game: * The "puzzles" are mostly random and do not exhibit any sense of logic. Some cannot even be solved without out-of-game knowledge. My recommendation is to just use a walkthrough and not feel bad about it. Also, if you overlook some items and move on to the next chapter, you're basically game over already and will never know it. * You cannot look at most things, even if they visually stand out. On the other hand, you must look at some things that don't have any visual indication, leaving you running around rooms and spamming the "Look" key all the time. * There are many, many death traps that are unavoidable without prior knowledge, i.e. at least dying once. * Mouse support is implemented so poorly that you're better off just ignoring it and using the keyboard. * You can adjust the walk speed of the character, but it's coupled to the animation speed. This means that if you don't want to wait hours for Parker to get a move on, you'll have to accept that every animation in the game plays too fast and thus looks ridiculous. * The game hung and crashed a few times during the playthrough. TL;DR This game is a badly designed frustrating experience.

Wanted to love it, game breaking bug

At a certain point in the game, you must use a "small key" to unlock something. However, this did not actually work for me and for at least some other users (as seen on the forum). This locks all progression and when I tried to restart from previous saves it didn't work. Trying to use saves off the internet didn't work either, as for some reason, the game failed to ever display them as an option to load even when they were in the saves folder. Game is pretty neat other than that. The old graphical style holds up alright and enhances the mood to me. That said, stay *far* away because there is a 0% chance of this game-breaking issue getting patched.

Atmospheric but rough

This game is very hard. I often found it unclear what needed to be done to progress. In addition to that, for those that hate mazes, be warned! Graphics set the mood but are uneven with several (what appears to be) very bad cut & paste jobs. These things disrupt an otherwise atmospheric adventure based on the works of Lovecraft. There are some very memorable scenes in the game. If you're a fan, give it a try, but you might want to have a walkthrough handy.

A poor showing

The interface and navigational controls were outdated at the time. Making travel take much longer than is needed even when you crank up the speed, though it brakes your immersion in the atmosphere to do so. While the game is filled with objects they exist only as placid elements of the background art. You cannot interact or eamine them to learn more about the world save for a few examples. Talking with ohter characters is as frustrating as can be. Your character must be aligned properly in relation to yourself. Your characters do not do so automatically. Same goes for picking up objects. The writing though is sharp and done well. The chracters are believeable enough though we have the usual early 90's VO hamminess. In the end it is a shame that the mechanics kept me from enjoying it.

Almost unplayable mess

There are just a few games I'm not able to finish but this is one of them. Everything from the controls to the puzzles to numerous cheap deaths, Shadow of the comet is just a mess. I fought my way through the infamous catacombs but decided to just quit because I was not having any fun with the game. The puzzles are absolutely the worst part of the game and most of the time make little to no sense. Add in some timed puzzles and mazes and you got yourself an extremely frustrating adventure game with awful controls which only merit is a decent story and setting. Even though I paid next to nothing for it on sale, SotC has not aged well and I just can't recommend it even to the most die-hard Lovecraft fans.
