A complete letdown
I played this game lured by the reviews that said that the interface was a bit rough but that the story and atmosphere would more than make up for it. Having worked through this mess of a game, I have to say that for me they do not. The story is mediocre and does not make any kind of sense without having read Lovecraft's books. And if you've read the books, there is little reason to play this game as it does not live up to the standard of Lovecraft's works. Atmosphere is often broken by bad graphics (probably budget-motivated) such as all night backgrounds that look mostly identical in brightness to the day backgrounds with just the sky cut out and replaced with a dark one. You can even see the jerky corners left behind around anti-aliased edges by bad cut jobs in some images. Other problems of the game: * The "puzzles" are mostly random and do not exhibit any sense of logic. Some cannot even be solved without out-of-game knowledge. My recommendation is to just use a walkthrough and not feel bad about it. Also, if you overlook some items and move on to the next chapter, you're basically game over already and will never know it. * You cannot look at most things, even if they visually stand out. On the other hand, you must look at some things that don't have any visual indication, leaving you running around rooms and spamming the "Look" key all the time. * There are many, many death traps that are unavoidable without prior knowledge, i.e. at least dying once. * Mouse support is implemented so poorly that you're better off just ignoring it and using the keyboard. * You can adjust the walk speed of the character, but it's coupled to the animation speed. This means that if you don't want to wait hours for Parker to get a move on, you'll have to accept that every animation in the game plays too fast and thus looks ridiculous. * The game hung and crashed a few times during the playthrough. TL;DR This game is a badly designed frustrating experience.
