Perhaps My Expectations Were Too High

I'll be reviewing the free content update and this paid DLC as one "whole" update because I don't always know where either ends and the other begins. There are many positive additions to and modifications of existing content in this update. Many base-game areas have been reworked, and in some cases expanded, in (mostly) favorable ways, including many interstitial areas initially absent between zones. One of the fully new areas is excellent, with enjoyable platforming and combat and a pleasing aesthetic. The new bosses integrate seamlessly into an already impressive roster of foes. There are more spells with varied functionality that, I would hazard to guess, could be bent to use in novel builds. Other changes feel lateral or even detrimental. Some base-game screens have had their enemy composition tweaked to include those added with this update, and not all of the enemies added facilitate what I'd consider a fun combat experience. Sarmiento y Centella have received deserved buffs and reworks to some moves, but their mechanics and interaction with the Verdadera Destreza system are still opaque, inconsistent, and glitchy. Further, Ruego al Alba was either broken with the update or significantly nerfed. I'm not sure why we had to trade the two when Veredicto is already strong enough to trivialize many encounters on its own. Spoilers below... Mea Culpa has been recreated faithfully...more or less...from the first game, which is an utter shame, because (nearly) everything it can do can be done better, or at least more done more stylishly and packaged with more functionality, by the three weapons which succeeded it with the release of Blasphemous 2. I had really hoped for something...new. Some fresh addition to my arsenal. The game has become even more lopsided, with much of its content (including Mea Culpa) being unobtainable until the majority of story milestones are already completed. So-called NG+ only carries over cherub collectibles. What a letdown.

Repetitive

================ This DLC is very repetitive with many rooms to cross with the new progression mechanics offered by the new weapon. You have to do the same passages many times until you know them by heart. I loved the 2 episodes of Blasphemous but this time I'm disappointed. I might change my review after I've progressed a little further.

Absolutely terrible to play

NG+ is cheap. Not hard, cheap. There's a major difference between those things and one is not just a more extreme version of the other. Cheap is when you crank up the damage so you can call the game harder while only putting in 5 seconds of work. Cheap is when you make bosses faster without testing them to make sure they don't have undodgeable attacks. Cheap is making a buggy mess even after a patch to supposedly fix everything. Cheap is punishing you for dying with a tedious mechanic that makes you weaker when you die unless you go farm enemies to pay an NPC to fix you up again. That one was part of the base game, but you'll notice it a lot more now that everything kills you in 1-2 hits. How did they let this one out, seriously? I expected a whole lot more from team17 and the game kitchen and they let us down so hard. Don't buy this, even if you're a fan and you already have the game.

There's no real ng+

Nothing you have collected carries over to ng+. The only thing you will keep is penance rewards. Calling this an ng+ is false advertisement. I know ng+ was implemented with the free update, but since it's tied to this paid dlc the criticism is valid, since, as there is no real ng+, there is no real reason to spend any money on this game anymore.

Improvement of the base game

I was a little disappointed from the base game. It felt too big for the amount of content it provided. The DLC does a good job at filling everything out. I enjoyed the new boss fights although there are not that many of them. It is heavy on plattforming. Some of the new enemy types are more annoying than fun to fight against. Watching the new ending gave me a nice tingle. At the end it is more of the same. I enjoyed it. I don't really understand the hate it gets. It does not blow me away like the first game but I think that is just because it lost its novelty and the lack of the beautiful pixel-art videos.
