...but still an easy recommendation. Great world design, great movement mechanics, story that's a delight to uncover.
I LOVE this game. The only issues are with optimisation (had a lot of slowdown in places) but that's not unexpected in such a massively ambitious and complex game.
Can't wait for the final release!
This is a review for the game at full release!
First, I want to say that I love that the developers made a game like this. It has passion and scratches a specific cyberpunk FPS itch.
Let me start with the negatives since people want to know right away whether or not to save their money.
DISCLAIMER: THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON PLAYING HARD MODE
Cons:
-Weapon sounds are a little weak. Shotgun and machine gun don't feel impactful (until you get explosive upgrades).
-Spawning enemies feel cheap on hard mode, where giant robots spawn behind you and hose you down with fire. Have to react constantly.
-Bosses are VERY tanky, on hard mode. Lots of time and footwork needed to beat them.
-Some save points in odd places; not that it matters much, because you can quicksave, but still odd design choice.
-I picked the poison augment to use, which I almost never used because it seemed sort of useless. Maybe the ice one was better (again, on hard).
-A bland second episode (basically you're inside a computer complex, which doesn't look as good as the other episodes IMO).
Pros:
-Well-realized cyberpunk atmosphere, music and environments.
-Fun combat if you do lots of dodging and countering with your sword. Guns get more fun with grenade and missile augments.
-Not too long. The episodes end without outstaying their welcome.
-Because it's in the Zdoom engine you can use cheats if you get impatient with some portions (noclip and godmode)
-Cyberspace portions don't take too long and aren't too punishing (unlike the System Shock remake)
-Story is decent (I don't have a strong opinion here, but some would like it).
Overall, I really like what this game delivers and want more like it. I recommend players unsure of what they're getting into to NOT play on hard so they can avoid cheap ambushes. If you want cyberpunk action, GET IT!
The weapons feel very unsatisfying and anemic. It just doesn't feel fun to fire the weapons and the katana has no weight to it on hits so it feels very floaty.
Game isn't properly balanced for the hitscanning enemies, and the level design is messy at best. There are much better games out there using the Doom engine, such as Supplice, Selaco, or Ashes 2063 (A free Doom TC.)
Give this a pass.
I generally enjoy the game. It's nice and snappy, with fun weapons, a double jump, a dash, glory kill, all the staples of a good modern styled boomer shooter. I think where the game falls apart is the "hacking" sections. It turns into a slow, sometimes irritating, puzzle game with poor shooting mechanics. I don't mind the puzzles, but I do mind the change in game feel. If the VR hacking combat took inspiration from the rest of the game, I think it could be one of my favorites of the past couple of years. I quit playing it because the hacking sections were getting so boring. If that's how they want the game, then that's how they want it, but I'll give it another shot here in a couple months, and if i start to feel like it's a chore to play I'll just end up dropping this one entirely. With that out of the way, let me gush over the visuals for a second. I really just don't understand why we don't have more pixel art cyberpunk. It is one of the most visually appealing things in existence and there is SO MUCH room in the space for it. Fingers crossed this one gets some love.
