Grow, gather and manage resources to help your settlements thrive, and share goods between the hexagonal lands and planets around you. Relax and expand the fabric of your growing societies and create a solar system of happy planets at your own pace. Not everything will go your way, though - use your wits and research solutions to overcome the challenges that your ancestors once faced.

FEATURES

  • Build settlements for the newly emerged Peeps
  • Discover and research the ancient technologies around you
  • Manage resources, pollution and happiness to avoid the mistakes of your ancestors
  • Trade between your settlements by sea and by space
  • Explore six unique biomes on islands of all shapes and sizes

THE STORY

Your Peeps have spent generations underground. They’ve missed the caress of sun on skin, the squelch of soil between toes, the tickle of flies on noses. They emerge, full of wonder, but with no idea how to grow anything - except potatoes. Start rebuilding their lost civilisation by providing shelter, uncovering ancient technology, and expanding this reborn society to other continents and planets.

But the universe is not safe. Ancient, ancestral guardians demand attention and challenge your settlements - it’s up to you to circumvent these creatures that hamper progress and disturb your newfound peace.

There are no weapons, no battles with neighbours for control of resources - just you, and a solar system full of opportunities.

Fun beginning, a boring chore at the end

Cute design and i love the spherical hex grid in which the game happens. At the beginning it plays nice and swift, it reminded me to Settlers 2 (one of my childhood favourites). The problem comes at the middle game and gets worst in the end game: 1) In order to better your peep's lifestyle and happiness you must create better good and services for them, and to do that you must start colonising new islands (no single island has all the crops and raw materials). That means you must weave your network of trade ships and ship ports and at that moment the AI loses its brain...ships getting delay, goods not arriving at docks, etc, etc. You must use manual trading at some point to fix the inter-island economy (LAME !). 2) You will get attacked by space whales very soon !...YUP, space whales !. And they eat chunks of your planet that will never regenerate so you must rush your way through the tech tree to get that Aegis Shield and Whale Charmer, but that takes us to the third point in this list: 3) It takes forever to get the full tech tree. You must colonise between 3 and 5 new planets in order to get sufficient technology parts to unlock the tech tree. By that time the space whales had lay waste to your planets, sometime ruining your local island economies forever !. 4) Lack of statistical data. You never know for sure how much your peeps eat or how many clothes they use. You must build lots of farms and tailors until you "kinda feel" your peeps are having enough goods. 5) Guardians are annoying. The minotaur, the gremlins and the sphinx are stones in your boot. The first one scares your peeps, the seconds will steal your goods and the later will shoot at your buildings. 6) Space ships are TOO DAMN SLOW !, you can't build an efficient space trading system due to this !. 7) I hate the Unity Engine ! It makes game run too HOT, my PC rig runs at 60-65 and my Raptor gaming laptop runs at 75 with this game !. Developers should make their own engines for their games.

Surprisingly much content

BFL sends out quite some Anno vibes. You live on a planet with multiple islands of different spec, and there are people to keep happy. There are a multitude of things that improve or decrease happiness of your folk. Over time you develop new skills and will also be able to travel the stars, which is fun, as you can find more islands out there. You will also find some natural" and "supernatural"things going on, which you learn to cope with. Every time you think you have figured it out, the game comes up with something new. Some tasks obviously are a bit repetitive as it is the case in any city builder. But the bulkload of content really keeps you motivated to start a new settlement on yet another planet. At the same time the economy is very stable and you don't need to stress too much and can just watch your people or cows doing their job. If you are annoyed by the supernatural threads, you can also disable them. The game is very stable, I did not see any bugs except for one animation. The trade mode works well, you just say how much of what resource you want to have on which island and your trade vessels will make sure that all ports taking part have at least the given amount (even over multiple hops!). With the zero and infinite rule you can move all your stuff to a central hub, too. One minor flaw: the energy system could be better. Renewables do have a way too high storage capacity and production rate. It's like there is a nuclear plant and a huge battery array hidden in each solar cell. This makes them much too strong and the day/night cycle have no effect. I think the storage should be lowered by 90% at least. There also is a pollution system in place, messing up the once beatiful wilderness. When it gets too bad your buildings switch off. I want to send in my people with protective gear and turn the whole planet into a wasteland, while my main folk is thriving in a paradise somewhere else. But that's not an option...maybe I just haven't found it yet.

Fun Beginning, but poor pacing

The game looks and feels pretty funny and the beginning is intriguing. You build up a small settlement, discover the world, explore new technologies, build more facilities. All that is town building standard fun. However, the game implemented a few features that make it deliberately, artificially slow and tedious. You need to micromanage the flow of ressources between diefferent islands on the same planet, need to build the same base facilities on one island over and over again until you reach the space ship, rinse and repeat. It is actually a shame, because as promising the first hour of the game is, as boring and ultimately a chore it becomes quickly after.

Nice game design, poor software quality

On my desktop PC (Ryzen 7 8700G, 64GB RAM, nVidia 4070 Ti Super) the game crashes after 15-30 minutes and brings the whole OS down, need to hard reset. Other, more demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 work fine on the same PC, and the computer is very stable otherwise, it’s unlikely to be a hardware issue. Does not happen on a laptop with CPU-integrated AMD GPU, though. Cloud synchronization is unreliable, destroys save files by synchronizing in the wrong direction.
