Are you into intriguing, well thought-out, deep and elaborate role-playing experiences? Tough luck, champ! Welcome to Bn’B™!

It’s a visual novel, but not exactly a visual novel. It’s also an RPG, but not really? It certainly is ✨something✨.

What do you think you’re doing? Attempting a move without consulting with the BM™ first? Thinking you’re gonna rip a goblin’s head off with your bare hands? Roll the dice, kid. Would you look at that, turns out the goblin’s a buff lil fella, you better run for your life.

Your parents never asked you if you wanted to be born, but since you’re here, you can finally take part in important decision making! Your opinion may come in handy during oddly specific, scripted, fictional scenarios where you’ll be asked to resolve conflict. For instance, do you think the party should talk to a random massive tree or would you be better off committing arson?

This campaign might be short, but you can still form long-lasting relationships (with fictional AI-controlled players that do not exist outside your computer, which sounds weirdly similar to your partner). Side with Elana and cast protection spells together (this is your Sabrina moment) or take Galskap’s side and set the whole world ablaze (this is your Pyro moment).

Kaltrion™ is like that place you never went to for your annual family vacation- AKA Nashville (good for you, though, it’s literally in the top 10 worst places for family vacation, look it up). Wait, I mean it’s a great place to visit with a Bn’B™ party, just not with your parents, maybe it’s too NSFW for them, unless you got cool parents, which you don’t cause why are you considering playing Bn’B™, then? Explore the myriads of filthy swamps, the thousands of crystal clear lakes, the hundreds of picturesque hills and one cave.

Let me set some things straight first, kiddo. This party has been active in Basementeering™ since 2017. Since then we’ve played like, what, 3 campaigns? We were busy, alright? And, most importantly, the BM™’s job is very demanding. My campaigns are top-notch, the best, chef’s kiss! I would say they’re worth all their... erhm... whatever this costs in your local currency right now (for legal reasons we cannot disclose specific amounts). Maybe even more, but I consider myself rather humble and I don’t wanna get greedy, it’s your first time playing with the party.

Simulator of a classic pen-and-paper RPG

Simulators are quite a big genre these days. Some companies even specialise in developing or publishing them. ENVy Softworks had an interesting idea to make a simulator of a classic pen-and-paper RPG. And so it is. B'n'B simulates discussing strategy with your party, listening to another player argue with a GM and rolling the dice from time to time. Sounds silly enough? Well, it should, because the game does not take itself too seriously. It is clearly a parody, even the title is a reference to the D'n'D. There are other references in the game, like Bugbeer, a joke on owlbears (which have become viral fandom memes). The dialogues in the game are actually quite funny, I really laughed a couple of times. B'n'B reminds me a bit of the recent film Honour Among Thieves. However, the film was brilliant, and the game is much worse. This simulator is really realistic - which means it has all the pros and cons of a pen-and-paper RPG. Do you know the situation where your character is out of action for some reason and you just watch the rest of your party play without you, and it is so uninteresting that you are so bored you literally fall asleep? The whole of B'n'B is like that. Most of the time it is just like a visual novel where you are reading dialogues between other members of your party or between them and the GM. Don't get me wrong. I love games with rich lore and compelling dialogue, but for something to be considered a game, the player has to interact with the environment rather than be a passive reader. And when it comes to choosing an action or an answer, there is always a time limit. I think that absolutely spoils the fun. There are types of games that should be fast-paced, like shooters or action games or even RTSs, and others that should be relaxing, like point-and-clicks or turn-based strategies. B'n'B could be such a relaxing experience, and it missed its chance.

Buy a snack, listen to a podcast instead

I didn't have high expectations for $3. I downloaded this and played the whole "game" in one lunch break. Nothing you do really feels like it matters. It's just clicking on text with some pretty basic dialogue and some "choices" which boils down to siding with the jerk player or the other two halfway decent role players, and there are meters to show who you are getting along with but they don't seem to really matter. So your basically really reading someone's fan fic of what a rough OSR D&D session would be, that is uninspired, not fun, and short, and then the GM asks you if you like it and if your honest they throw a toddler tantrum and the game ends. There you go, if that sounds like it's worth $3 knock yourself out. In retrospect, I should bought a soda and a candy bar and listed to an OSR Let's Play podcast and would have had a more satisfying experience.

Slow visual novel

Buyer beware, there's really no appreciable roleplaying to this game. It's a visual novel, and your choices don't seem to matter much. So you're just there to read what happens. The graphics are thematic and actually add to the story. The characters are funny. It does feel like a story from a pen-and-paper RPG. So, if that sounds appealing, this might be worth a purchase. It's OK for what it is. There are some funny moments, but the gags keep getting re-told until they're not funny anymore. And the story is told slowly -- because this is packaged as a game, you have to wait for die rolls that don't matter and click through every bit of dialogue. It'd probably flow better as a video or a straightforward visual novel.

Practically a demo

Basements n' Basilisks is a mixed bag. On one side, this game is everything I hoped titles like "Knigthts of Pen&Paper" would be, but unfortunately weren't. This has it all: Wit, parody, the idiotic ideas of party members that are so typical of real D&D sessions, background, trivia. maxed out nerddom stats, story telling the way it is supposed to be, meta talk that makes sense and ties into the setting. Great background ambience/music that fits perfectly well. Decent enough graphics. In short 5 out of 5. Except! It doesn't feel like your decisions matter, and it is all over in 30 minutes, ending in a cliffhanger. In short: This feels like an appetizer, a proof of concept, or perhaps a demo. I'm fine with that, but I would have liked to be told upfront that we are not getting a full game.

Very fun novel for tabletop rpg players

This game is a visual novel, it features some dice rolls and choices, but I believe it's scripted, and if it's not entirelly scripted and some things can change, it would still railroad you to the story. As a tabletop rpg player I found it extremelly fun and enjoyable. I can really see myself and other people I played with in this game. It's not deep it does not pretend to be deep either, it's just an enjoyable experience. At least if you experienced roleplay I would believe, it's inevitable to meet people like the ones portrayed here. It got me good in some right places and that'sl all it need for me to give it a good score. It's short of course, but I hope it continues with more content, more campaigns.....would be nice to have it closer to a game like knights of pen and paper without that much grinding, but it's ok if it stays as a visual novel. The price is low and I think more than fair, I've had meals and drinks giving me less joy honestly. If it was more expensive I'll be more picky to be sure, but as it is, perfect.
