Avernum 4: Greed and Glory Hintbook & Extras
Description
Started in 1994, the cult-classic Avernum series is one of the great video game sagas! In this epic fantasy role-playing adventure, you explore and conquer an enormous underworld. Battle through huge dungeons, fight unique and cunning foes, collect, create, and bless hundreds of different artifacts, and enjoy a really good story.
Avernum is a nation underground. Kept alive by the courage and magic of its inhabitants, it stretches through many hundreds of miles of caverns, mines, and labyrinths. It is a wild frontier, attracting adventurers, explorers, brigands, and monsters, all racing to claim the wealth and knowledge in its caves.
You have come to the wild edges of the known underworld with your own goals. (Wealth? Freedom? Conquest?) Once there, you found disaster. Many powerful forces hunger for the riches of the underworld. Swarms of beasts attack. Cities fall into ruin. Your bad luck: You're the one who might save Avernum from its crisis. Can you do it? And what will you take as your reward?
Avernum 4: Greed and Glory features:
Epic, turn-based fantasy adventure in a gigantic world, full of interesting characters, clever dungeons, and quests both grim and funny.
Open-ended story, with multiple factions who plead for (or buy) your support. Practice politics with monsters and choose whether to bring a happy peace or a profitable disaster.
Complex, open-ended game system full of tactical options and ways to build your party. Well over 100 abilities, traits, spells, and other ways to gain power.
A unique fantasy world packed with lore, humor, and history. Not your standard elves and orcs.
Avernum 4: Greed and Glory is the beginning of Avernum's Great Trials Trilogy, and experience with previous Avernum games is completely unnecessary. This is a remaster of the original cult-classic, Avernum 4, which came out in 2005, and features a greatly expanded story and tons of new dungeons, characters, and quests.

I never played to the old Avernum, and I discovered the serie with the remasters. No nostalgia here. Avernum is a excellent game, that should meet the expectations of all fans of old school RPG. Engaging turn based fights, epic story, fabulous lore.
Thank you for that :)
2 hour review. Will edit the review after more gameplay hours.
In short: story driven turn based RPG. Quests, choices, pick up/sell/wear items and go on an adventure with your 3 party members.
The story is interesting, the dialogues are good.
Graphics: all games from Spiderweb Software are similar. Each game gets a little bit better. The characters now are animated when they stand still, is that new? :)
Value: yes, if you accept what the game is. I think this game has a lot of content. (based on "how long to beat")
How well do I know Spiderweb software games? Not well. I've played Avernum (2012) for 2 hours and this one for 2 hours, subscriber of the devblog from Jeff Vogel and watched one of his talks on how he has been an indie dev for 30 years.
Bought it for 18 euro.
I'm new to these games from this developer, and they tend to have a similar gameplay to each other, but they're awesome nonetheless. You don't really need to play one to enjoy another, but there is a story and setting that carries on throughout these games that you would recognize from playing the others.
This one is the best game yet, in my opinion. Story progresses nice and slow and there isn't too much of a wall-of-text at one time, in case you're not into that. Gameplay is simple but enjoyable. I notice a few characters have portraits when spoken to, so that's nice as it makes you care about them.
As far as cons, for one thing I'd have to say there could be a bit more to the gameplay - maybe stealth? Setting traps? Maybe high ground or environment contribution to combat? Also, one of this developer's games I played previously had the ability to select enemies by using the keyboard (enemies were marked a, b, c, etc) - I want that again! Also, what about meeting characters to join your party along the journey instead of having it all set from the get go? Other quality of life improvements that would be great, but not necessary, are more character portraits so you feel more personal to those you meet, or voice-overs for at least the important story characters. Also, I'm not always sure what some conditions do (what is "wounded"? What does it do exactly?), so more thorough explanations would be nice. Would also love a beast journal to look up information on enemies you've come across, their weaknesses, resistances, etc. A combat log would be great too.
I know these games are created by a single person, so still quite amazing!
I regularly replay all of the Avernum games, and would strongly recommend them to anyone who feels intrigued by a RPG set in a wild underword settled by a nation of adventuring types.
This remaster of what was already a great game expands the content by adding a few more encounters and questlines, a much bettter fleshed out politics, and a lot of small tweaks and improvements (like new gear and racial restrictions, or a better level-up UI).
Although it still feels like playing A4 (which is a very good thing) it definitely feels like an upgrade, and as usual no regrets after buying a Spiderweb product.
