Asura is an indie, top-down, Hack 'n' Slash game set in a fantasy world inspired by the richness of Indian mythology. It features heavy rogue-like elements and a unique procedural skill tree which changes on every play-through.

Reincarnated as a demon, use your new-found powers and hatred to invade the 'Pancha Dvora'- the five fortresses of the Daeva empire. Embark on a journey to exact your vengeance against Hasirama - The God-King, Maharaja, and Slayer of Innocents.

Asura is inspired by rogue-like genre and is brutally difficult but FAIR…

Note: Asura is best experienced with a controller!

Procedural Skill tree:

Craft your Demon using a Skill tree which changes every time you die.

Absorb or Scavenge:

Asura can either Absorb enemies for experience points or Scavenge their corpse for loot.

Unique Combat system:

Engage the enemies with a variety of Melee, Range, and Magic weapons. Melee attacks will deal reduced damage to range enemies, Magic enemies will resist spells, and the Stamina system will always require you to strategies and adapt during battle.

Unique Loot:

Every item in Asura is unique by itself. Slash your enemies with Claw weapon or batter them with a Mighty Hammer. Shoot your enemies with your bow or ignite them with your Magic weapon. There are tons of loot to be discovered in Asura which synergies with your skills.

Brutal Mechanics:

When you get burnt, a random equipment will get destroyed from your inventory. When the enemies or traps poison you, you can't heal. When your health is low, it does not regenerate automatically. When you die, you don't get to save your progress.

Perma-Death:

Inspired by Rogue-like genre, on death you lose all progress.

Procedurally Generated Skill Tree

Mold your character using the unique, procedurally-generated "Shastra" tree (with over 80 skills!) for near-infinite replayability.

Unlock New Demon Characters

Unique Weapons & Armour

Not really a good flavor.

Pros: Random skill tree can be pretty fun. Decent and clean graphics that are not resource hogs. Simple stats and combat. (Range strong to melee, melee strong to range) Cons: Weapons and armor break if you get lit on fire. (Hint, there's lots of fire) Almost all environmental traps only affect you, enemies can freely run through/over all but one trap with no damage or effects. Basic rooms are harder than most bosses on the later levels due to Controls are suboptimal. - Controller or mouse are your choices, there is no look/facing control so you have to stop-face-attack for dealing damage. Ranged attacks auto-aim but will frequently select destroyable objects or enemies behind walls. No attacking while moving. No apparent long-term improvement of characters or skills between deaths. Realistically, this game may be for you if you like a challenge that has you spend most of your time dodging and fighting poor controls. Personally, I expect a bit different experience from my roguelikes.

A Dark Rogue-like Bastion

Asura has combat mechanics much in the vein of Bastion: move from area to area, utilizing both melee and ranged attacks and dodges. However, unlike Bastion, Asura is both randomly generated and exhibits a much darker tone. Games with a 'God Of War' blend of combat mechanics, RPG-like upgrades, and mythological backstories are becoming quite common. God Of War used Greek mythology to amazing effect. Darksiders added the characters of the Apocalypse to this formula. Bastion has proven it can be every bit as awesome on a very small budget. What sets Asura apart is its permadeath, randomly generated environments, and use of Indian mythology. While Asura, like Bastion, is an indie game treading what is usually AAA waters, it feels every bit as epic. Asura's use of a rather unfamiliar (to Western folk) Indian mythology may also prove to be another standout feature that'll have people talking about this game for a long time.

Check your expactations

You can choose between 3 control schemes and customize them. The game recommends a controller, but I play with "C" (= keyboard only) and customized shortcuts just fine. You can unlock 13 starting Chakras (=different bonusses you can start with if you want) and 3 more Asuras (different look and items) and you have 5 profile slots for family members/startovers whithout loosing progress. To try and prevent disappointment, because this game is perfect for what it is (my opinion): 1) If you are looking for a game you can sink hours into in a SINGLE run look elsewhere. It has 5 maps (e.g. compared to Torchlight 2 tiny, but just the right size for this game imho) where you have to defeat a boss to get to the next. You don't have to fight the other enemies, but if you enter a room with one or more, the doors lock and only reopen if you beat them all. 2) You have 4 skillcolumns each with 4 main Shastras (2 unlocks after 1 etc and level requirements) which each have 1 upgrade option. Those Shastras (21 for each column = 84 in total) are random each run. So if you like to "min/max"/"opimize" you might want to look elsewhere. (More numbers: 12 bosses, 9 champions, 49 others; 82 weapons, 41 armours) 3) If you want an "automated" real-time fight look elsewhere. In this game you have to dodge incoming danger and/or to look where you are running. You can't shoot arrows or swing swords/hammers while you are running and you have to turn around/change direction to face an enemy. Only ranged attacks that put marks on the ground overcome walls/objects. In my opinion is this game good for everyone who likes to beat up pixel opponents and to make more or less spontaneous choices about skills in a quick run (if you really take your time 30 min at most? I 'm bad at guessing and at these kind of games -still haven't beaten the last map-). I like Asura a lot. But I like quick "uncomplicated" games, so Asura is perfect for me. I'm sorry for any spelling/grammatic/punctiation mistake.

DMC meets PoE

Utterly crazy gameplay-wise and rather neat visually. Path of Exile like ARPG with dynamics of Devil May Cry 3 (or, even closer, Bayonetta - unlike DMC3, well-timed dodge matters here, ALOT). Creative progress system. Slim and _really_ impactful passives tree. Unusually colorful graphics - colorful exactly so much so it looks unusual yet don't cause headache. And, unusual story told via stylish movies and simple yet not any less stylish dialogues. 'Asura' is a real hidden gem. Worth trying. You won't see anything similar, not soon at least.

Fun game with some technical problems

I'm enjoying the combat. Nice and simple, with lots of weapons and powers to come up with weird combinations. But I've been having huge slow downs on menus (shops, skill tree, and equipment screen). This is on a 6 year old macbook tho, so if you have a newer computer or are on windows it might not be a problem
