Bleak, artistic, and a trial of patience

A volcanic event has turned the world into a desert of ash and ice; what's left of mankind is confined to high-tech domes; yours is failing; you're the third and last squad sent out to find a new home for your people. Your group of four offer choices for which paths to take, what to do with old gear and ruins you find, and how to approach wild beasts as well as fellow humans. To keep them going, you gather resources and make camp to manage their health, energy, warmth, food, and hope. This game is all about branching narratives. As you progress through increasingly inhospitable landscapes, you really navigate a tree of named events like The Vulture or The Button. Your decisions influence stats and resources as well as the direction you take. Many of them also have more subtle repercussions, for example on your relations with the tribal Outsiders. If squad members die, so dwindle your choices, which matters most in the late game when you choose what's left of 34 possible endings. There's lore to be found as well, and fireside convos help you get to know your squad. Bleak b/w landscapes, the camera following you on fixed paths, a title introducing each encounter - Ashwalkers is like walking through an art gallery, pausing at every painting. This is also my biggest gripe: Run after run, you watch your squad trudge along, click through the same camera pans and slowly appearing bits of text. This is especially aggravating since most of the endings branch off in the last minutes of the game. Granted, you can start in a custom starting zone, but I'd rather play through the whole experience with less, well, waiting. From the 4th run or so, I watched videos on the other screen while my squad trudged on. That's a shame, as the game's stylised visuals and hypnotic music can make for an almost meditative experience. I understand it's deliberate and fits the story, but with choices and endings being a major selling point, the game's slow pace still seems to weigh it down.

great slow burn VN without much text

ashwalkers hits a little different. - intense artstyle - slow paced - nice variety of situations - makes areas big by having you move slowly - neat setting (if you like ones where the world is destroyed but there is hope, just not for your guys) may be a good fit if? - you like playing games at bedtime - not in a hurry to finish a game - you like listening to ambient music - you enjoy the aesthetic - corridor games are OK - enjoyed no man's sky at launch (this game is also really mellow) may be a bad fit if? - you want consequences for decisions right away - you like to win / have good endings where things work out for you - you like to lose quickly when you have lost - you like jumpscares - you dislike horror / bad situations - you specifically play survival games (the survival mechanics in this one are very gentle) why did i review it / why is this special to me - one of my favorite quiet time games - reliably takes about 2 hours to play - interesting art design - you can put characters in different situations, then have them talk to each other at camp - choices primarily affect how the characters interpret the situation, rather than change it - vibe like kenshi - situation is actually OK for almost everyone except the characters why do i still play it - music is good quality - characters are enigmatic, easy to put yourself in their shoes - lowkey _relaxed_ horror - no jumpscares - nice wide range of activities and choices each session - survival part is not too tough / high pressure, but if you mess up, you slowly die (in a way that is still relaxed) - i didn't try to grind a lot of endings back to back and burn out on the game or feel obligated to play (worried about the other reviewers, hope things got better for you guys) my favorite session - party ran out of resources and died one by one in the highway sequence (the manner the game systems interacted was satisfyingly emergent), but they had helped a stranger on the way. so that was at least something.

Eh...

I mean, it's not bad. Take the graphical aesthetic of Borderlands, remove all color, walk along on a rail, add some choices, and there you have it: Ashwalkers. An OK time-waster. Nothing more.

Walking Simulator

It is a walking simulator. Sometimes I find walking simulators more entertaining than AAA titles. Just so you know what it is. My 5 star rating is based on how much entertainment i got vs how much I paid. Managing the campsite was confusing at first, but is actually simple. I did a couple of playthroughs and will leave it at that. There would be too much repitation to achieve all the endings. Each playthrough was a little over 2 hours. So if you are ok with the walking simulator, it was worth the price I paid just to see how it ended.

Badly done idea

The game is slow, and you have texts you have no time to read. You see things afar to be taken, and no you can't grab them. You're told you can camp, and no you're gone without a rest. You think you can take a road, and no you're always in corridor. What a bad idea this 3D, as devs don't know how to use it.
