Brilliant game, terrible port

If you enjoy Nihon Falcom's games, especially their groundbreaking action-RPG Ys series, know that Ys VIII is one of the best games they've ever made. Engrossing story, lovely art direction, fluid fast-paced "easy to play, difficult to master" gameplay, superb soundtrack. Having said that, as of right now, this PC port by Nippon Ichi Software America (NISA) is one of the worst ever made -- think Dark Souls level of PC porting. Resolution is internally locked at 1800p (even though you can set it to two other resolutions by using command lines and/or hex editing the game's exe file), there are sound bugs, a minimap glitch, 8-direction control instead of full 360º freeflow, the game keeps crashing to desktop for no discernible reason, there is some extreme flickering on at least two locations (epilepsy warning, by the way, since NISA still hasn't put up a warning of their own before they fix this), and a few other people keep coming across different bugs, crashes and overall issues with the game. Graphical options are as barebone as they get, and mostly for show -- turning them all on or off doesn't seem to have any major impact on how the game looks and, especially, how taxing it becomes on your machine. Some people have been getting lucky with the game (perks of playing games on PC, what might be broken for some may work for others). If you own a pretty beefy PC and if you're feeling lucky, by all means, get this game, because it really is amazing. Just be wary of the broken package it comes in. Also: unlike XSEED, who got us used to top notch Ys translations, NISA's EN localization is pretty mediocre (the first version was even worse, but thanks to the PC delays we only got the revised one), so be aware the translation is not that great, either. In short: absolutely great game that most PC players can't enjoy due to an appalling port by NISA. It would get one star from me for the port alone, but the game is so good that I have to at least acknowledge that.

Very poor PC Port

Do not buy in this current stage - the first game I have to send a refund request for a game of GoG. The game in itself is good on all accounts by Nihon Falcom - however this is not a good port by NiSA. You can also check out Steam reviewers for the range of issues many players had with this title at its current state. Personally I had steady 60 fps, but chapter 2 onwards I began to have missing / low res texture popups and seizure-inducing lighting glitch in a very large area which is necessary for the main quest. Which I could not justify putting up with for a full price game. Maybe one day I'll purchase Y'SVIII again when it's fixed - but not in this current state. Was really looking forward to this title but but will be very wary of NiSA's future releases.

Wonderful concept and a good game

The game has decent gameplay but sadly the characters are not good enough for a top of the line rpg. The story while being very ambitious and having really good ideas it fails in making the world feel lived in and credible. Most of the game the storytelling is lighthearted and casual but it also has parts were the game takes itself very seriously. The serious parts contrast strongly with most of the game which is so casual that it never really tries to make you feel this is a real world. The game continously tosses credibility and realism right out the window in order to make jokes or stay lighthearted. Gameplay is okay but to be clear, the game is easy. I played the game on hard but still the game is easy and I am not good at games. Don't go into this expecting a depth to the gameplay, its fun and easy but lacks depth.

Poorly optimized an bad port overall

Ys VIII is finally here! After more than a year of waiting and multiple delays, PC users all around the world finally recieved the game they've been waiting for. And what we recieved... was unplayable broken mess. Let me say it straight - my laptop SHOULD run it. It runs games with a lot higher requirements and doesn't have a slightest bit of problem with them. And my config IS within at least minimum requirements stated on this very page. But no. What I get is 3 frames per second. Actually, I didn't even notice any difference when I changed my graphics settings. And if that wasn't enough, when I launched the game for the first time, it appeared in 720p window and any attempts to change the resolution to my native or at least to put it in the fullscreen crashed the game. Actually, it seems to crash for any reason it can come up with. It happens really often. Overall, I really would like to recommend this game, but at least right now I can't. It is a very bad port of a good game. And if anyone from Nihon Farcom reads it (highly unlikely, but still), don't deal with NIS America ever again. Stick to XSEED, their port of Xanadu Next was amazing. Don't support the bad publisher who doesn't care about the consumers. Don't buy this game. At least for now.

The ending is baaad

The game is fun to play, the fast paced combat is pretty damn good. I love the setting, exploring a deserted island gives the progression a nice pace, there's a little bit of grind to do, but is not terrible, it even includes a little fishing minigame to take a break fro the frantic combat if you want. Unfortunately the music is not good, the village music is good to set the relaxed mood on the beach, but the overworld is just a single riff driven rock tarck that doesn't let down, so taking a stroll down a pleasant looking forest while the soundtrack is losing its mind like if you were in a boss battle. The worst part of the game is the ending, I don't wanna spoil it, but is very anticlimatic, it singlehandedly managed to take down the game from a 4/5 to a 3/5 for me, it's just not a worthwhile payofff for 60 hours of gameplay. But alas, no Ys game is perfect , and I shall in my adventures, following my favorite dog, Adol, who keeps spreading children left and right through the world, but they can't show that since this is a family friendly game. (you don't get 25 people stranded for months in an island withouth some of them getting busy, including the MC)
