Simple yet addictive.
These 'better', than Zelda clones don't always work, but this game is excellent even if it is fairly linear but it is all action, which I appreciate.

Exceptional entry to the YS series!
Solid gameplay, excellent story, rewarding experience! This game is a great part of the series and tells the story of the event's leading up to Ys 1 & 2! If you haven't played this game, buy it, enjoy it!

It was an interesting experience
The game itself looks a bit dated, but the gameplay is still quite enjoyable. It doesn't support modern resulutions and downscales your display to something pretty horrible and 4:3, but I was very plesantly surprised to see it running at a stable 144FPS on my matching 144Hz screen without any issues. Progression wasn't quite perfect. At some points it felt like I need to grind a bit more to deal with a boss or progress through the next area, but it wasn't too bad. Compared to the time wasting standards of even some modern JRPG's, it was just a minor inconvenience. The plot itself felt surpriringly good. Hardly the greatest story ever written, but generally fairly good. The characters weren't the usual generic stereotypes. The dialogue wasn't cringeworthy. It felt like real people struggling with real situations. Overall, fairly good and worth a recommendation.

Easily 8.5/10. Great game.
YS Origin is my first YS game ever, so I can't compare it with other titles in the series. This game has great story, corny at times, but overall good english text, fitting graphics and atmosphere, and solid gameplay. Players of explorative type will love YS Origin, as it's filled to the brim with helpful items do discover and use through the quest. Levels are cleverly designed and sometimes provide decent platforming challenge, especially in mid-to-final levels. Boss battles are long, challenging and really force you to get good in order to beat them. Controls are not only fluid, but remappable as well, which is definitely a plus in my book, although I highly recommend using a game controller. Music score is epic and well composed, you can't go wrong purchasing this soundtrack for your listening pleasure. Some of the complaints I have are need to grind levels in order stand any chance against bosses, strange damage calculation formula (I look at you, 1 damage), depth perception problems caused by use of 2D sprites on 3D plane and pacing of the game, due to how boring it can at times get. Also, achievements at the time of this review are patched out, and did not work before. With great story, outstanding sound and graphics and superb controls this game is a must-have for fans of exploration action games. Be sure to get it and experience it for yourself, you'll not be disappointed.
