There is a serious issue with using arrow keys or WASD to move in this game. Yooka responds to the key press too slow, and then keeps going after you've already released the arrow key.
Apparently the original camera issue has been fixed. Using the mouse to control the camera is the way to go.
So hopefully, they will also fix the movement key sensitivity in a later update.
Other than that, the game is fantastic, so I give it 5 stars.
Firstly, ignore the extremely negative reviews. This game is all around fine. While it is certainly rough in many areas, the overall product holds up, and is enjoyable. Especially recommended to those who loved the collectathons of the N64 era. I rated this 4 stars, but realistically this is more of a 3.5 ... a bit better than average, and I had fun; I'll likely replay the game some time in the future. This is no Mario Galaxy, but it is still worth your time, I ended up 100%ing it.
Beautiful graphics/art, excellent music changing dynamically with the location, many things to do to collect the "stars" (pagies) that vary between each of the 5 worlds.
Boss fights are hit and miss, but each is varied and feels unique, so I appreciate that effort.
The controls/mechanics are also hit and miss, where most things feel fine, but sometimes sluggish controls hurt the experience (especially felt in some of the minigames).
I appreciate that the game didn't go fully easy mode, like many newer titles can be. The difficulty is about just right (a 3-4, where 10 is dark souls deprived)
I appreciate a lot of what the devs tried, and you can tell this game had a lot of love put into it, but it still needed more time/revision: more polish, some revisions, and this could have been perfect.
While I was originally put off by some of the politics/drama in development, and then by the many overly-harsh reviews, I'm glad I finally gave this a chance, and I think you should too. The game most importantly is fun, despite being marred by some flaws throughout. I'd be on board for a Yooka Laylee 2... they have a lot of great ideas and a lot of things that can be improved, but overall this first game makes a good impression.
I'm 25 and grow with the N64 and PS1 plateformer games like those of Rare. I expected a good old game with modern gameplay and graphics. I was very disappointed by the gameplay. For example, why can't I use a flying jump in the first world? It's a trick you need earlier than the eating trick. Why put a very stupid quizz to reach the sexond world? It's so slow to pass and break the rythm. Why do I need to ear again the speech of a NPC when I fail his challenge? If I'm failing 20 times I don't want to ear him 20 times. Why can't I pass the text during cutscene? However, let me choose the speed of the text in the options.
For the quality of the game everybody has said it. My comment is just here to say you shouldn't expect too much of this game.
PS: Sorry for my english, it's not my first language.
Would be around 70% if gog would allow for a bigger variety of game ratings.
Anyway, the start is nice, i smiled a few times, partially cause of the jokes, partially cause of the mumbling voices and just because it felt alot like Banjo Kazooie.
Btw. the voices, which seem to be annoying for alot of people get less and less used the further the game proceeds, so that shouldn't be a real issue... never was for me and still don't get the hate about them.
But sadly, the levels aren't build nearly as well as the ones from BK. Even though they are wide open areas, the worlds kinda feel like patchworks of segregated small challenges. And the challenges are uninspired most of the time. With at least 50% of them being timed races through rings, at least one boring "arcade challenge" per level, except for the casino stage, that one was actually ok.
A lorry challenge per level, which is extremely bad compared to the ones you know from any DK, old and new. And the rest are small "puzzles" where you have to look for the right ability triggers to solve them.
And all of those worlds and challenges felt really unpolished.
Animations from the characters are often missing or not fitting at all.
You can skip some challenges with newer abilities while others have invisible walls to lock you to a specific path.
The enemies are the same in every map just with different skins.
The music isn't very good either. And i'm kinda angered by David Wise and Grant Kirkhope. I have no idea what went wrong with this one, but both of these guys composed awesome soundtracks in the past for DK and BK. Yooka-Laylee though, is a big disappointment in this regard.
I can commend this game to people who have only a PC, already finished SM46, BK and BT and desperately want to play a 3D-Jump and Run.
But to everyone else, don't buy this game.
A great, simple nice-looking adventure game. The levels are unique, the soundtrack is great and lots of cool power-ups. Really worth the price (when it goes on sale for $15.00). Would recommend
