Yakuza Complete Series
Comprend : Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3 Remastered, Yakuza 4 Remastered, Yakuza 5 Remastered and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

I didn't even dare to dream Yakuza here!

This series is gorgeous and unique, full of funny mini stories, sincerity, trust, sacrifices and even drama. After you've finished the whole series, you will feel sorry that the story of Kazuma Kiryu's doesn't continue anymore. A few months ago I bought all the Yakuza series on Steam. I played the entire Yakuza series on PSN and I have the original PS3 and PS4 discs as collection. I won't miss the chance to buy Yakuza on Gog as well. For the new gamers ( I wish I didn't know the story to play them for the first time as you), here it is the playing order of the games: Yakuza 0 Yakuza Kiwami Yakuza Kiwami 2 Yakuza 3 Remastered Yakuza 4 Remastered Yakuza 5 Remastered Yakuza 6: The Song of Life Yakuza: Like a Dragon and get ready for… Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (November 2023) Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (2024)

The Biggest Yakuza Game

Just beat the game on Steam and it's probably in my top 5 entries in the series. It feels like RGG listened to all the criticisms of Yakuza 4 and improved on it. Although I will say that this game is long. Like LOTR Extended Edition long. Because there is so much packed into this game including the main story, the substories, the four side stories that include a taxi cart racer, a hunting game, and a baseball minigame, the Hostess stories, the training masters, the Underground Colliseum, and all the usual minigames that show up in Yakuza games. This is a game that is going to keep you BUSY if you are a budget gamer. One of the big highlights for me is the combat which tight, versitile and impactful. It's spread out over 4 characters and each has their own skill sets that feels unique and varied. You have Kiryu who utilizes combos and strong counter moves, Saejima who is a tank who tanks through hits to toss enemies around, Akiyama who utilizes strong kicks to launch enemies into the air, and newcomer Shinada who is a scrappy street fighter and weapon specialist. Even Haruka gets in on the action by engaging in Dance Battles and talk shows as she works to become a Idol Star, something that I thought was a nice change for a female character instead of making her a badass fighter. The main story stands out to me as it does a fantastic job maintaining a coherent and consistent narrative across 5 different protagonists in different cities and scenarios. I found the overall sense of intrigue of underworld politics, the twists that connect the events of the cross-country story, a good supporting cast of side characters, and one of the greatest villians in the series. It does suffer from having events happen to make the plot move forward, major events happen off-screen, and some characters just vanish despite seemingly being a bigger deal, but they don't detract from a great narrative. Overall, I would recommend this game at full price as I think it's that good.

Long, but Worth it!

In my opinion, this is one of the best games in the series. Just like in the previous installment, you have multiple protagonists, but this time, each has their own city to explore, and everything fits together pretty nicely. Each character has their own side story (not to be confused with substories), and even though they largely center around minigames, I found myself enjoying them quite a lot! These are almost exclusively things that shouldn't interest me at all, but they all found a way to hook me, and I played all the way through each of them. The rest of the gameplay is largely similar to that of the rest of the series... until you get to Part 4. Part 4 is just such an odd fit in almost every possible way, and I see what they were going for, but I wasn't a huge fan. The story is just what you'd expect from the series: same old over-the-top manly melodrama you've come to know and love, though this one comes with an ending that even got me all emotional. Instead, I'd like to talk about the other toppings, mostly the visuals. As I mentioned, each character has their own city, and these cities are GORGEOUS. You'll see a few familiar places, but the new ones are absolutely breathtaking; I found myself wandering for hours, just because I didn't want to move on. It's very rare that a game with a realistic visual style can grab me like this, but just about every place I went was exquisite. On top of that, the soundtrack is among the best in the series, topped perhaps only by Zero. If you're a fan of the series, this entry is not to be missed!

Improved over Y4 Remastered for sure

Straight into Y5R, you can expect to extend your main story playtime a good 10hrs+ more as the pacing feels a bit slowed down here but the fun content packed here is good. You still get to play the same 3 main characters from Y4R: Kiryu, Saejima & Akiyama-san but with a new 4th character (which was wildly different tone-wise and you will get to understand him as the plot unfolds later on, trust me) and a friendly cute face Haruka-chan for Part 3 was a welcome change of pace playing like a Hatsune Miku: Project Diva / Dance Dance Revolution spinoff game. I really liked the side stories for each character but my favourite has to go to Saejima's because there's something about hunting & wintery forest environments in games I like a lot that get me immersed (personal preference really). Combat moves are still the same from Y4R, yet gaining experience and spending points has been changed just slightly enough to warrant an option of having it auto-spend these soul points as you level up. Unfortunately, I felt the chase battles with certain mini-bosses & QTEs this time to drag just a little bit too long especially when many more cutscenes take place before and after each chapter was progressing and more waves of enemies. I absolutely felt out of the 4 major characters I played (Haruka not being an actual fighter for Part 3 but still fun mini-game wise), my favourite has to be Saejima this time around. I could appreciate where the main story was taking him, his motivations and absolute drive to unravel the mystery of the mastermind behind this sudden takeover. I honestly don't miss his mop-like hair from Y4R, to me that means embracing a welcoming change. As for when the main storyline came to an end, I couldn't really say I felt all that good about it, rather a bit sour. I just think it kind of ruined the whole point of the overarching message about making dreams come true knowing what to sort of expect when going into Y6 now. Nonetheless, onto Y6: The Song of Life!
