The year is 2673, four years after the Treaty of Torgo and the end of the Kilrathi War. As hostilities died out, more trivial concerns like rebuilding what was lost or dealing with space piracy, became the biggest concerns of the Terran Confederation. Even Christopher "Maverick" Blair, the famous Confed pilot responsible for ending the war, settled down and became a farmer. In these times of peace, humans grew fat and complacent. All good things must end, though. Soon enough, heinous incidents erupted on the outskirts of the Confederation, and humanity was forced to the brink of civil war. Confed HQ needed the best and decided to recall Colonel Blair to active duty.
luckily GOG offers both the original MS-DOS version and the Windows DVD version and while the DVD version obviously looks better with much nicer FMVs, the lack of customisability is a huge detriment to the game.
the MS-DOS version is easily playable in windowed mode (through DosBOX config) and if you play with a joystick with more than two buttons you can use DosBOX's keymapper to remap your spare joystick buttons.
you can't do that with the DVD version as far as i know.
i could live without the windowed mode (barely), but not being able to remap those joystick buttons which forces you to rely on keyboard commands for a wide variety of tasks is a no no for me.
anyways, the game and story is really nice, it's Wing Commander at it's finest, just if you can't get into the DVD version due to the controls or lack of widowed mode, just try the MS-DOS version.
I am a complete newbie to the Wing Commander universe. I purchased this game due to that fact that I thought 6GB sounded like a good amount of game for $5.99. Not knowing exactly what to expect at the time, I will now tell you this is one of the best games I have purchased from GOG.com! It stood the test of time and has a ton of replayability. But this is more than just a "game". Wing Commander IV borderlines between a "Video Game" and an "Interactive Movie". With compelling story telling and fun gameplay, WCIV is hard to overlook.
The gameplay is not revolutionary by any means but you wouldn't find anything like it in the modern market. Made me feel like a real Wing Commander! I had good ol' fun flying around my own ship and blowing up enemy space crafts.
All your choices have consequences in this game and... Mark Hamill. Nuff said!
I cut my teeth on Wing Commanders 1 and 2. Wing Commander was one of the best space combat sims ever made. Wing Commander 4 - The Price of Freedom was a very excellent follow-up to the groundbreaking Wing Commander 3 - The Heart of the Tiger. Mark Hamill did an excellent job in the three games he played in for Origin Systems.
This game was an excellent blend of cinematics and gameplay. Your decisions affected the ships and NPCs that would be available as allies (or enemies) in future missions.
In short, this game is excellent. More than worth the asking price on GOG.
If you do purchase it, do yourself a favor and get a decent USB Logitech or Thrustmaster joystick. Not only does it make the game easier to play, but helps make it a wonderfully immersive experience.
Wing Commander IV est souvent considéré, à juste titre, comme le meilleur opus de la série - l'épisode avec lequel elle aurait dû s'achever, pour être honnête.
Le budget exceptionnel du jeu y est pour une grande part, offrant enfin tout son sens aux vidéos qui pullulaient à l'époque sur le support CD en offrant rarement une valeur ajoutée au jeu. Ici, on a voulu faire les choses bien, et on s'en est donné les moyens: Mark Hamill (La guerre des étoiles), Tom Wilson (Retour vers le futur), Malcolm McDowell (Orange Mécanique), John Rhys-Davies (Le Seigneur des Anneaux), le tout filmé à la grosse péloche hollywoodienne avec de vrais décors et des vaisseaux en image de synthèse, et son en Dolby Surround. Autant dire que le budget permet au jeu d'enfoncer les dialogues filmés devant un fond bleu qui constituaient l'essentiel de Wing Commander III.
On pouvait craindre que la disparition des Kilrathis prive le jeu d'un certain souffle épique; il n'en est rien. Là où WC3 offrait un scénario somme toute caricatural et des dialogues assez manichéens, WC4 a la grande force de vous propulser dans un univers où l'ennemi n'est plus clairement identifié. Pirates ? Terroristes ? Indépendantistes ? À qui peuvent bien profiter ces actes vides de sens et d'une brutalité extraordinaire ? C'est là que se situe tout le génie du jeu: on se laisse prendre à mener l'enquête et à prendre des décisions lourdes de conséquences pour comprendre pour quelles raisons on a tenu à nous sortir de notre retraite.
Le système de combat n'a pas changé d'un iota depuis les premiers épisodes, même si la réalisation en 3D lui donne un bon coup de jeune. Les combats sont dans l'ensemble assez simples, du moins jusqu'à ce que vous ayez l'idée d'augmenter la difficulté (première chose à faire une fois en vol: presser "Alt-O" pour ouvrir l'écran des options).
WC4 reste encore aujourd'hui l'un des jeux les plus marquants jamais sorti sur PC. Essayez-le, vous ne serez pas déçus.
I loved this game as a kid, but sadly the gog version needs major work. For instance, the DVD version the movies ignore all settings that you set, I had subtitles on and didn't see a single subtitle in this game. Also the movies are super soft but the rest of the game is loud as can be! There's also no way to exit the game short of ALT+TAB then x the window, as ALT+X (the intended key to exit) just crashes the game. And to top it off, the DOS version which they include as a bonus has corrupted files and doesn't work past mission 5.
Sadly I have to give it two stars due to all of these issues. You can make the DVD version work, but the DOS version, where, oddly enough, the movies and sound are properly synched so one isn't so loud it wakes the dead, cannot be played unless you got an old copy still sitting around and can provide fix the corrupted files yourself.
