Anti-thesis of Roadwarden

Roadwarden was a pleasant surprise: a text-based RPG/CYOA mix that knew exactly what it is doing with its presentation and content. Windy Meadow is trying to cash-in on whatever small fandom Roadwarden has developed, but delivers just a banal and shallow VN. While Roadwarden artstyle was minimalistic, WM feels simplistic for turn. While Roadwarden was densely written, WM has just incredibly corny dialogues non-stop about teenage angst. The setting goes trough the standard "explaining too much of everything to ruin the mystery that made it interesting". And worst of all, it's simply boring. After certain point you just don't care anymore and skip dialogues to see the conclusion, while majority of dialog options have zero impact on things. Disappointing

Pretty decent

I played it just a few days after I finished Roadwarden, but also with the expectations that it's just a smaller tale within the same fantasy world and not the same kind of indepth experience. In that sense I wasn't dissapointed, on the contrary; while the gameplay goal is a very different one, the narrative goal seems to me the same as of Roadwarden; telling personal tales about orienting yourself in the world, among other people, for yourself, how to balance those things and so on. And I think Windy Meadow delivers this just as much as Roadwarden, just in a way more condensed and channeled way. Anyhow, I enjoyed it

A Satisfying Slice

I've read Windy Meadow was made before Roadwarden and then polished and re-released afterwords. Like Roadwarden, Windy Meadow is a vividly described slice of a much larger world. Unlike Roadwarden, it’s an even smaller slice of that world; the player is restricted to narrower character choices, with chapters each presented from a different perspective, and all confined to a small clan’s village. The narrative spins around a couple dozen of that village’s inhabitants, some struggling with their life’s direction even before disaster strikes and forces them to reevaluate their priorities. A glossary describing each of them changes with the chapter’s perspective. Before starting the game, the opening menu offers a map of the area with locations summarized as the mouse hovers over them. Although it lacks an open-ended structure, it’s one of the most engrossing interactive novels I’ve played. Windy Meadow sat in my wish-list for months (years?) before purchase and only because of my love for Roadwarden. I played it for the first time yesterday and finished it today. The art charmed me the more time I spent with it. A slow start built momentum with my interest in the characters and their relationships. It’s been awhile since an interactive novel so drew me in. It was a mistake to put it off for so long.
