I read again through the reviews and found the issues to be adressed in the patch notes, so I gave it a try. And I wasn't disappointed: The atmosphere and exploration is really great. It took me about 8 hours to get to the middle of chapter 3, because I played with different boat contructions and scanned the islands carefully for yet unknown ressources/recipes. It's also a cool catamaran sim. You can sail with one hull in the air! There are two important simplifications: The boat forgives more mistakes before you fall off into the water and it behaves much better against the wind (is faster) than a real cat. Being acceptable for the sailor these changes make the game much more enjoyable for the gamer. I think they really hit a sweet spot with this patch. The occasional combat, e.g. if you need some crafting ingredient or food is ok. The most dangerous combat can also be avoided or carefully planned, it resembles very much the situation of a lonely castaway. The survival aspect is fine, because it requires the player to develop some skill like knowing where to look and planning ahead. You can carry only the rations for the next trip, as you can feed on the go from various sources. When the "sharks" showed up accompanied with a very "jaws" inspired music I got panicked and dropped much more often into the water, the only place I tried so hard not to be. It was hilarious, well afterwards. The game has the most magic on its first playthrough, but then the fun sailing part and the mixture of relaxing and stressing pace probably take over for replayability. If you are into this kind of atmosphere and exploration games go get it!

Hard pass. Makes little sense

This had such promise, but dropped the ball on nearly everything. Brutal inventory system, Uninformative building processes. Punishing consequences for failure with no information. Horrendously long, painful times to get anywhere. Sailing mechanics are capricious at best. This game is an utter failure that looks stunningly beautiful. There's no way to even interact with the map so you are constantly lost and often at a loss as to where to go next. Meat rots before you can get it cooked and cooked meat rots before you need it! Utterly ridiculous. Unless this gets a MAJOR rework for the next patch, there isn't a hope in hell this game is worth getting.

Interesting idea, but shallow on content

I really like the premise of the game. The visuals and the music are really good, but I think its biggest downfall is that sometimes it feels like too much of a chore. First, the positive. The game does a great job of giving you a sense of embarking on a grand adventure. Once you begin sailing the seas and finding islands, there is a great sense of exploration and discovery! The game is also progressively generated, so the islands on each chapter all are different every time you play (though sometimes it can feel kinda copy pasted). The music is sublime, I would by a vinyl to listen to it. The game also looks really nice! Now, the negative. My biggest problem with the game is that early on there are many things that are a chore. Your inventory space is really limited, and it can make it really annoying to manage it to craft items. The game forces you to have everything in your inventory to craft items, so you have to constantly swap stuff to get the right ingredients. If you could just craft the items if the ingredients are nearby, and if you could just auto create the base items if you already have the ingredients for more complex items, that would be incredible, and remove much of the tedium. The combat needs work too. I really hate that when you attack you just stop dead on your tracks. From other games, when you swing or trust I expect the character to have some momentum when moving forward, but there is none. It's really annoying trying to hit fast moving targets. Sailing is fun, but when the wind is not cooperating, its not fun. At all. You move so slow and zig zagging is still too slow. I like the roguelite mechanics of being able to buy upgrades that are persistent, but I wish players had more of an option of what to choose to upgrade instead of it just being random. Overall, I feel the game has a lot of potential, but it's held back by those problems. I don't feel right now its worth the $30, but with some fixes and more content I would recommend!

I want to like it

It's atmospheric and it really could be joyfull to navigate sea and icelands, but you always should hurry for resources, craft, food or you'll die on starvation and there is no option to remove it or easier. Gave up. If I want a stressful game with a timer, I'll go to market before closing.

Finally

After the latest update, the game became not only playable but also enjoyable. I wish it was like this when it was released.
