Description

While echoes of the original release pacing problems remain, the Director's Cut does much to add variety to the experience with new features such as perks, quirks, and precision aiming. It's likely not enough to warrant a replay if you've already finished it, but if this is your first foray into inXile's bleak vision of the future, this is the best place to start off.

Despite some gameplay flaws, Wasteland 2 gets a lot of things right for the genre. Fans of isometric, hardcore RPGs will find a detailed world to explore in the title. inXile Entertainment provides deep attention to detail on an awe-inspiring level. Creation of independent currencies and social hierarchies in the game create a living environment. Fully fleshed-out NPCs with voice-overs add to the detail of the wastes and make characters more than just placeholders. Interacting with the environment may lead to new clues and options for gameplay. Wasteland 2 is full of player choice and replayability that will keep players busy for a while. With gameplay easily exceeding 80 hours of content, Wasteland 2 is not for the faint of heart. Those who appreciate challenging experiences and detailed world-building will find Wasteland 2: Director's Cut an important installment in their RPG library.

Waste of time and far too much money.

Wasteland 2 is moderately entertaining, though it eventually gets really tedious, but it lacks substance, style and variety. It introduces a combat system that seems complex at first, but then you realize that no tactics are involved: All you have to do is shoot the enemies with the biggest gun and hope to win by attrition. You can move your characters, which is the only thing you can do besides shoot, but you need action points to beat the enemies before they kill you, so that is not a good idea. Poor combat could be ignored if the game had an interesting story or set of quests, but Wasteland 2 is completely pointless. Mot of the quests are inane tasks like finding dogs and fetching items, and the quests become even less interesting as the game continues. Wasteland 2 has no story, villain or point until the end, where an incredibly, technophobic plot twists is introduced moments before the final boss. Imagination: Nope, sorry, all the settings, enemies, characters and quests are bland and uninteresting. This is the most generic of post-apocalyptic worlds:: One, I realized in retrospect, was a copy of a faction in Fallout 3--but the other, a disco robot that distracted me with blinding psychedelic lights, was legitimately clever. One original idea in a 70 hour game: Wonderful. Crippling bugs and design flaws: Objects blocked my view half the time, my characters threw away their clothes, my sniper forgot how to load her best sniper rifle, the game crashed repeatedly, half the loading screens triggered error messages, the scripting broke, the probability of accomplishing skill checks on specific objects was inconsistent, items disappeared, enemies came back to life after I restored saved games--this game was a mess. Hint: Do not save over an autosave or a timed save with dead enemies around, as the enemies may return to life upon restoring the game.

A waste(land) of time. Not for me.

This god damn game. I have as many problems with it, even though I have spent about 30 hours on Wasteland 2. Thing is, even with the director's cut, the game feels so janky and badly designed. I cannot even fathom where I should start or end this in details, so in the spirit of how the game likes to simplify things, I'll do a pro/con list (which of course applies to my own tastes and feelings about this kinds of RPGs). PROS: -Huge ass world, or so I've been told. I had enough shortly after exiting turorial land. -The combat seems like a neat evovled version of what I remember from the old Fallout games. -Total freedom in how you would like to build your team. -Well written dialogue for the most part. CONS: -The combat always feels unfair. Either you feel overpowered, or the enemy feels overpowered. In my case, it makes most combat feel like something you want to avoid. This would be fine, if combat were not at least 60% of the whole game. -The character creation, aesthetic-wise, is infuriating. Nothing matches the portraits, and the choices for character looks are minimal. I also just do not like how they portrait quirks. -I cannot for the love of Christmas understand the tone of the game. The combination of a deadly serious survivor-setting and the dark humor is not done well in my opinion. I sometimes have a hard time giving a fuck about the stories, when about a third of them suddenly act as if the game was Deathspank-like (fun series btw). -Walking around and doing tasks/checks/anything TAKES FOREVER. I feel like 5 of the 30+ hours of gameplay have been spent on looking at progress icons and my party walking across a map. -The game constantly makes up new unintuitive rules that you to save-scum, in order to actually have a chance to understand and then follow. -Old school ways of doing skill-checks, with % chance seems like waste of time if you give people punishment for failing, while providing them a save button. Just. Stop. It.

Good game if you like Fallout-like RPG-s

Many people written before me about pros and cons, so instead of those, i'd like to give some starter tips : - Assault rifles are OP, even more than snipers, get at least 2 in your party - Pair the following skills on a single person : Lockpick/Safecrack, and on another person Mechanical Repair/Comp science - If you create new characters, make sure they have every piece of clothing, and a secondary weapon chosen at character creation - Sell all the clothing and the secondary weapons at Ranger HQ, and buy the Rad suit -Now you can explore safely, many hidden weapon caches are in the North/South region ( if you loot a FAMAS, dont sell it ! ) - Sometimes you can run into a trader who can sell extremely powerful weapons even at very low level; once i had M16 at level 2 ( If you have money, buy the M16, and the M24, but at least the M16, you can get only one for sure for a long time ) -AG Center can be harder than Highpool, if you dont bring alot of ammo, since enemies dont drop it there, plus Highpool has free healing ( i personally found Vulture more useful than Rose, so i do Highpool in all my playthroughs ) -Buy all the high damage rocket launchers, and save for the endgame (you can loot RPG-7-s later, but its a very rare drop ) Thats it, now go and explore the Wastelands ! :)

Adult themes implimented with immaturity

It was alright, I was able to finish it, but just barely. I wasn't very motivated to do so. The game's combat is mediocre. Get in cover, shoot. Try not to die getting into melee combat. Die trying to get into melee combat. The enemies are simple except for the 'bosses', but those weren't all that interesting. If you like a lot of bosses to fight, there were very few. Lots of group combat against a dumb AI. The dialogue is boring. The functioning of the people, raiders, etc. lost my suspension of disbelief. In a desolate landscape there sure seem to be A LOT of people just raiding everywhere. There is A LOT of childish humor, not the good kind. It actually takes you out of the game. For one thing you can loot human/animal solid waste and sell it to an explosive maker for a marked up price, repeatedly. There are a lot of detritus of civilization traders seem to want to buy. Like ferbies, broken items, snow globes, and 'toys' which look like dildos. A brothel is involved in a quest and apparently all the women stay naked, even when they greet you outside to ask for help. There is also another brothel in a city where apparently people come from far and wide to be noticed like movie stars so they can become prostitutes. Wishful thinking from the developers? Or just willful ignorance of real prostitution anywhere in the world presently or the past. I have no desire to play this game ever again. If I thought I'd get my money back I would try. I did play and finish, but just to finish the game. I really shouldn't have, so disgusted with a lot of the themes/attempts a humor which end up being dumb in the context of the game or out of it.

Not as good as Fallout Tactics

A Fallout Tactics clone that is almost as good as the original and not as good as Fallout 1 and 2 by far. You play a group of four people and no one of them are "you". I preferred the style of Fallout 2 where you start by yourself and find companions along the way. Towns are boring and lacking in detail compared to for example Fallout 1 and 2. The skill system is boring and like other reviewers pointed out, almost every skill is for either opening a chest or winning a dialog. I miss the variety of skills, perks and traits present in Fallout. I enjoy many games with turn based combat so that is not an issue for me but I'm not sure that this game is worth the time to finish.
