Description

While echoes of the original release pacing problems remain, the Director's Cut does much to add variety to the experience with new features such as perks, quirks, and precision aiming. It's likely not enough to warrant a replay if you've already finished it, but if this is your first foray into inXile's bleak vision of the future, this is the best place to start off.

Despite some gameplay flaws, Wasteland 2 gets a lot of things right for the genre. Fans of isometric, hardcore RPGs will find a detailed world to explore in the title. inXile Entertainment provides deep attention to detail on an awe-inspiring level. Creation of independent currencies and social hierarchies in the game create a living environment. Fully fleshed-out NPCs with voice-overs add to the detail of the wastes and make characters more than just placeholders. Interacting with the environment may lead to new clues and options for gameplay. Wasteland 2 is full of player choice and replayability that will keep players busy for a while. With gameplay easily exceeding 80 hours of content, Wasteland 2 is not for the faint of heart. Those who appreciate challenging experiences and detailed world-building will find Wasteland 2: Director's Cut an important installment in their RPG library.

I expected a little more

It's a pretty good game if you like crpgs with turn based combat, but I can't see myself replaying it. The story is ok even though I got a bummer ending. The combat is challenging and there is a lot of it, so you have to create a combat oriented party on higher difficulty. The dialogue is cool and I just with there was more of it , with more branches.

A mixed bag.

Really it's hard for me to say whether I do or don't like this game. I'm dropping it for now in terms of playthrough and sticking it on the backlog but that doesn't mean it's bad. I feel like my issue is with the game in terms of style and gameplay. The writing and setting is nice, the visuals aren't too shabby looking and get the atmosphere across. The gameplay is okay and that's where it begins to fall apart. I like old school CRPGs a lot so weird design and tedium don't bother me, but somehow in this game everything was just compounded into one tedious irritating mess. I'm sure for some people this game will hit some kind of super sweet spot and they'll love it but eh, myself? I think I'll pass on it. It's a real shame that I'm finding the game so grating because honestly the story has potential! It's just held back by silly little issues and poorly aged gameplay. Oh and combat that is eye-gougingly boring. Seriously. This has the worst CRPG combat I've played since Ultima 7. wth

Too long for it's own good, but fun

Wasteland 2 is split into two halves. The first half of the game feels really well put together and thought out, the plot revelations all lead to more forward momentum, and the enemies continue to present a challenge to the player while also staying new and fresh. Things start to fall apart in the second half of the game. Enemies get stale, minus a few set encounters. The quests become a string of bland, endless menial tasks. The goals of the main quest still hang over your head during this part of the game, but it's one of those situations where you have to achieve a bunch of small things before you can get back to the fun stuff. The game starts to just throw potential NPC recruits at you, as if by that point in the game you don't already have much better allies anyway. The player encounters different factions LONG before they ever get explained, which is kind of off-putting and sort of breaks immersion if you start to wonder just how in the world your Rangers know the name of those specific robots or moral zealots, etc. The second half just feels tacked on and overly long for it's own sake, as if the developers really, really wanted to be able to advertise 80+ hours of game play, even if the last 30 or so hours end up being a slog. There are other complaints to make, like a handful of useless weapons skills, an irritating skill use system that rewards save scumming, barely tactical combat, enemies that get dull well before the game is over, SOOO MANY faction quests that are just either/or choices... in fact, most of the game is faction quests, and they get old real quick. All that said, I still enjoyed Wasteland 2. The story is enjoyable when it's firing on all cylinders. The garbage loot is always fun stuff like old game consoles, sex toys, Atari ET cartridges. There are a lot of funny NPC dialogues full of Easter eggs and inside jokes. I would cut out most of the second half of the game if I could, but it's still a fun time to play through at least once.

Great party based Post Apocalyptic RPG

Did you know the original Fallout was inspired by Wasteland 1? Anyway, Wasteland 2 is a pretty good turn based post apocalyptic RPG. Create a party, take along some unique characters, and blast the wasteland clean. The main thing that sucks about this game, is it's engine/optimization. Unity isn't a bad engine by default, but it's not particularly great either. Just wish they optimized their game better, it kind of runs like dogshit, even on minimum settings.... at least on my old PC, which ran better looking and more demanding games far smoother. My first (or was it second) playthrough was with 2 custom characters, Kiryu and Majima from Yakuza (specifically their Yakuza 0 selves), complete with custom character portraits. Kiryu specialized in hand to hand, obviously, and Majima specialized in blunt weapons. They were unsurprisingly, very overpowered. Have you ever seen a Japanese man punch a giant assault robot to death? Me neither, until now. It was GLORIOUS. Also, this game gave me a new character creation tradition for these types of games. W2 has some default characters you can choose from the character creator, one is a punk Medic lady that uses heavy weapons, and first aid named Stitch, the other is a handy Sniper Mechanic Lockpicker named Slick, he kind of reminds me of Jock from Deus Ex. I also made Stitch and Slick in Wasteland 3. If you like games like Fallout 1 and 2, etc, get this, you won't regret it.

Rough around the edges! JANKLAND 2

This is really an average RPG with horribly low budget/lack of polish issues. I am at 10 hrs, the story is ok, visuals... well it's Unity engine lol but they are good for an isometric RPG. I am having fun with it but also struggling to put up with the negatives, and there are a LOT. Camera angle is brutal, you can zoom in/out but it's always too overhead, it needed to be at a lesser angle. Also, walls don't become transparent near them. So you always need to rotate the camera to get a clear view. Sometimes selecting something doesn't work, or you have to move your cursor. I commonly can't attack an enemy and need to move the cursor past them just to highlight them. Tons of systems are not explained well enough or at all. The writing... JFC it is BAD. Case in point: "Isley, P. This woman has a forest of herbs growing out of her skin. You're suprised no one has rolled her up and smoked her like a joint." WTF?? Really? I'm down with the herb but the writing is so pathetically terrible. Difficulty makes no sense. Most enemies are easy enough. Then I come across a character who has initiative to attack first, he fires like 6 times, takes down 3 of my party in his first go. I kill him but the characters who had the ability to stop the (now 4) bleeding/revive are all on the floor. No choice but to load a previous save. It's instances like that that really ruin the fun because it is just bad design. Up to that point every enemy could attack once ore twice per turn. Then without any indication, superman lays waste to most of my team lol. I don't know if I can handle 80hrs of poorly designed, bad writing, janky systems but it is average enough I'll put up with it for now. I understand the reviews that bring up the painful experience this is due to the low budget or lack of design/testing/GAF factor from the developer.
