Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat

Shadow of the Horned Rat was one of the first, if not the first, games to do tactial regimental warfare, five years before Total War really popularised it. There is no strategic layer, but instead a linear story with occasional points where you can pick one of two paths or the occasional optional mission. Also unlike Total War, you have hero units, mages and magic items which can be very powerful and turn the tide of battle if used correctly. Unfortunately, it is a bit lacking compared to more recent titles. The graphics don't ruin the game, but haven't aged at all well. The interface, more importantly, is also rather lacking and can be a bit awkward at times. Strategic depth can also be lacking in some ways; since you follow a story you have little choice in what units are available to you, and in any case there are no real counters or rock-paper-scissors systems - either a unit is stronger or weaker than another and that's pretty much it. However, there is still strategy to be had, and focussing your forces, hitting the enemy's flanks and picking the right time to unleash your fireballs can all make it quite fun. One point that may be considered either a strength or weakness depending on your preference is that losses in battle carry over. If you do too badly in one fight, you may find yourself without the money to hire replacements. It certainly helps with the story, but unfortunately does encourage save scumming since you're never sure if you'll find yourself in an impossible situation a couple of battles down the line with nothing you can do about. Overall, if you like the Warhammer world and associated stories, this is not a bad game for the price. It will especially appeal to people who like the combat in games like Total War but aren't fans of the strategic empire planning.

This game is basically a digital version of fourth/fifth edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle with a compelling story-line and great side-quests. It is a haard game, but it does compel you to come back. Requires some resilience compared to modern titles. Just keep in mind the ui is from the 90s, so take your time, and give the game a chance and you won't regret it.
