In UNDERTALE you play as a human child who falls underground into the world of monsters. Now you must find your way out... or stay trapped forever.
Welcome to UNDERTALE, an RPG game where you don't have to kill anyone. Each enemy can be "defeated" nonviolently. Dance with a slime. Pet a dog. Whisper your favorite secret to a knight.
Or, ignore this choice and rain destruction upon your foes.
But your journey will take determination. Each adversary has unique bullet patterns that you must dodge as well (don't worry, it's not that hard).
Killing is unnecessary: negotiate out of danger using the unique battle system.
Time your attacks for extra damage, then dodge enemy attacks in a style reminiscent of top-down shooters.
Soulful, character-rich story with an emphasis on humor.
Created mostly by one person.
Become friends with all of the bosses!
At least 5 dogs.

One of the best games of the 21st century, and maybe even onward. If you've never heard of this game, please do yourself a favor and do as little research as possible before playing it. It's absolutely worth going in blind and enjoying it your own way without any external influence. Grab the soundtrack once you've finished it, and go play DELTARUNE if you're craving more. Then grab those soundtracks too.
This was certainly not a game for me. I love role-playing games and was encouraged to play this by people who strongly recommended it as something funny and unique. Therefore, my expectations were turned up and thus really let down. First of all, I really disliked the characters and jokes, which other people have said should be charming and funny. For me, all is just silly, like an obscure and ugly web-comic. It did not feel like a well-written RPG at all, but rather a parody of some kind. Moreover, the fighting system is really terrible, one of the worst I have ever encountered. I was told that I would be able to talk to my enemies instead of fighting, so that I could be a pacifist throughout the game. I was really looking forward to that, since I feel that it is an option missing in most RPGs (Phantasy Star being a great exception). However, the fights are made like little "bullet hell" mini games, where the player must avoid missiles instead of speaking to the enemies. Extremely terribly executed. Sometimes I managed to end the fights peacefully, but the quickest way to stop the pain was usually just to kill the monster quickly. I cannot understand why anyone would love this fighting system, since it has nothing to do with the story, taking place in caves inhabited by friendly monsters. It is a huge mystery to me why this game is loved so much by so many people. My real quest now is trying to find out why people recommended this is the first place. What makes them so positive? I really wonder.
This game has genuinly clever ideas, and is full of surprises. The "bullet hell" gameplay is engaging, as well as the "act" style combat. There are fun moments (not hilarious though). But in the end I never really cared for the world it sets out to build. It hints at would could be a truly engaging game, but never fully delivers, and is so busy both trying to be clever and trying to be silly, that it forget to tell an engaging story. (I never plays those game it references, so I does nothing for me)/ There are also pacing problems. The end part feels really rushed, and repetitive, while near the begining are more graceful and atmospheric moments (that participate in the world building). (Also, but this is a problem with the genre it copies, it's really a drag to HAVE to press a button to scroll text one or two lines at once, and there is LOTS of text. give me more texte at once, or just unroll the text whitout me having to have to intervene.)
Undertale is perhaps one of the best surprises to pop out of the gaming scene, and manages to remain so well after you see a few screens of the game. In fact, it will keep you happily guessing what is going to happen next, as well as perhaps even what the hell just happened. This game really is simply a joy to play, and if you are a fan of console-style RPGs, but looking for something genuinely new, look no further. Undertale is that something new dressed up in VERY old-style graphics. And while it’s extremely short for an RPG, it’s also so cheap that I find it hard to believe anyone will complain.
I got *really* bored, really quickly, tried to press through it but gave up quite early. Everyone is attacking me to kill me and I'm supposed to want to learn about their back-stories for some reason? Why would I want to do that? In general there's nothing really wrong with the game, everything is playable, I just don't see anything interesting in it. Oh the soundtrack and the sound in general is very nice, +1 for that. The graphics are nothing to write home about, the controls and menus are nothing to write home about, I guess the story (but not the characters I saw) may be something to write home about but when there's nothing else interesting around I'd rather just read about it or watch a video. The gameplay was repetitive from what I saw.
(Also, the Linux version doesn't work for me but the Windows version works fine on Wine)
