Army management

You are the general. You have full control over the army composition. Based on your successes and reputation you might get access to more corps, divisions and brigades. Keep your soldiers alive and they will learn to fight better, turning from green rookies to crack veterans. Lose a lot of your soldiers and you might not have enough reinforcements to deliver victories. Your reputation will suffer, army morale will drop and you will be forced to resign.

Innovative command system

You decide which level of control you want. Command every unit individually or just give them a main goal with one button click and watch if they can take that hill. Army divisions commanders can make decisions on their own and help you control the largest army. Draw a defensive line and allocated brigades will defend it like lions. Or design a deep flanking maneuver by just drawing an arrow and send the whole army to the enemy flank or the rear. Your generals will try to fulfill your orders, although "no plan survives contact with the enemy".

Officer progression

Historical unit commanders progress and become better fighters together with the player. The Officers rank up based on their units’ performance, but it's war and they can be wounded or even get killed in action. New ranks open new possibilities and allow officers to lead bigger units without efficiency loss. Winning battles also opens new possibilities for you as a general, increasing skills such as reconnaissance or political influence.

Historical weapons

There is huge variety of Civil War weaponry from mass produced Enfield pattern rifles to rare Whitworths. Historical availability has also been implemented. Certain weapons can only be captured by raiding supplies or taken from the enemy on the battlefield.

Enhanced unit control

Detach skirmishers to send them to scout those hills ahead. Or merge several brigades into one bigger division if it’s needed. Dismount the cavalry to become less visible to the enemy or mount for fast flanking charges and supply raids. Supplies are extremely important and you have to plan and defend the provisions otherwise the battle might end for you early.

Advanced Artificial Intelligence

You will face a strong enemy. AI will flank you, will hit your weak spots and undefended high ground, will chase and cut your supplies and will try to destroy unguarded artillery batteries. AI will use terrain and will take cover and retreat if overwhelmed.

Terrain matters

Trenches, lines, fences, houses, fields – everything can help to achieve victory, if you know how to use it. Hills will allow you to see enemy units earlier. Rivers and bridges can become natural obstacles that will help you to defend. Forests can help you hide your movements and flank the enemy.

Beautiful maps

We believe that modern technology allows hardcore war-games to finally stop being brown on green hexes. Hardcore, deep war games can be beautiful. In our game, every historical battle landscape is accurately hand-drawn, utilizing data from satellite and historical maps. The topography plays immense strategic role and helps to understand how battles were fought and to learn history.

Love it! But could be improved.

I'm fascinated by the Civil War. So I love this game. But I'll give some good and bad... Good: - Refreshing departure from grand strategy. Unlike the Total War series attempt at both grand strategy and battlefields tactics, UGCW focuses on the battlefield and army management. - Beautiful artwork without attempting photorealism. Only basic computer needed to be enjoyed. - Addicting "just one more battle" game play. - Fun (if not realistic) army management features between battles. Bad: - Needs better modeling of morale (both on and off battlefield). Routing on the battlefield is fairly easily recovered from and brigades (regiments really) will rally fairly easily and march toward their deaths. Battlefield morale modeling could be improved with more likelihood of regimental level surrender when surrounded, complete routing from the battlefield without it always meaning desertion, and more apparent refusal of orders (its unlikely that a brigade would continually route and then rally and charge back toward a position on the battlefield where they just suffered 30% casualties). Morale in Army management could be improved by introducing desertion following battles with high casualties, occational capturing of deserters and options on what to do with deserters. At varying points in the war both sides had extremely high levels of desertion. It was a huge factor in army management. - The enemy never withdraws when the battle is obviously lost in an effort to reduce casualties. It's easy to rack up rediculously lopsided victories by cornering remaining enemy troops at the edge of the battlefield. - Casualties... linked to both of the above criticisms... battles routinely end with 50-75% casualties on both sides. This simply did not happen (at least not routinely). - Friendly fire... troops are eger to fire on their own if a friendly brigade is in midst of melee with enemy - Corps are treated like Brigades, Brigades are treated like regiments in terms of numbers

Best Civil War Game Ever

This campaign oriented Civil War game is just phenomenal and lots of fun to play. Calling it a game doesn't give it justice as it's more like a simulation of the Civil War. The directions are linked online and take about an hour to read which is highly recommended before playing. There is no tutorial to speak of. You can choose to play Union or Confederate forces with 3 levels of difficulty. From the Manassas Campaign you move on to Shiloh and so on with smaller battles in between to help you strengthen your army and learn aspects of the game. In between battles you go to Camp where you can create new units and get replacements for depleted units, etc. This is where you assign unit leaders and the various equipment for different types of units (firearms for infantry and cannon for artillery, etc.). The variety of equipment is astounding and historically accurate for the period. There are even photos of the various leaders for each of your units when available. You can arm your units with all kinds of historically accurate firearms from that era. The firearms are rated by damage, range, accuracy, reload time, and melee with a short description of each. You can keep the equipment of units who surrender to you in battle. You can sell captured equipment or arm your units with them. You even get more recruits through prisoner exchanges if you have captured enemy units. Units and leaders gain experience which can then be used to give the unit enhanced abilities. You can even rename your units as you prefer. Your character also gains experience and reputation as the game progresses. Reputation gives your troops extra morale and can be used for requesting assistance from your government (but it will lower your reputation if you do) The AI seems pretty capable and will try to outflank you along with other battle strategies. This is now my absolute favorite game and I can see where it will keep me entertained for hundreds of hours. I highly recommend it.

A pleasant surprise

I purchased this game during a period of "I need to play strategy games" but I wasn't expecting anything great. I was wrong. The battles are engaging, and you are given quite a lot of freedom to achieve your stated objectives. Not just in regards to your tactics, but also in the composition of your corps and divisions. It doesn't skate over the brutal and blood soaked period of the US civil war either, some battles will inevitably lead to huge losses. Importantly though, learning from those little mistakes (that can lead to hundreds of excess deaths) is satisfying and leads to less losses next time. Adjusting your approach and learning the optimum time to go for the throat of the enemy feels great when it pays off... and painful when it doesn't. Losing a battle isn't necessarily the end of your "career". You build reputation by winning battles which, when high enough, can save you from a defeat. Performing well in battles, and increasing your proficiency in Economics, politics, etc., gives you fresh recruits and additional capital to expand (or rebuild...) your forces. Performing poorly returns fewer reinforcements and financial rewards, which makes the next battle even harder. The developers achieved a good balance between difficulty and learning. No battle feels 'unwinnable', but almost every battle feels like a new challenge. There's enough of a difference between these battles that I can play several without getting bored. This game was such a pleasant surprise for me, considering it has received little attention compared to other "big hitting" strategy games. I highly recommend it.

You are The General!

Ultimate General: Civil War is a very challenging game. Enemy AI will take advantage of your weak points. You need to properly use elements of environment and terrain heights. You need to carefully take care of your army between battles. Even after making good preparations, AI will sometimes beat you. All of this may sound like not your coup of tea. But there is also the other side - when you will finally win long and brutal fight, you will leave the battlefield proud and victorious. You will feel like a general. Best strategy and gaming experience of my life.
